When did Geddy's voice change? When did he begin to sing in a deeper register and get away from the "shrieking" of the early days?

    • RUSH - I remember back in 1970 when he REALLY had a high voice

    • Fly By Night - his vocals are tuned down to owl from tweetie bird

Does anyone know if that shriek was his natural range?

I remember Geddy saying in an interview that when he first started singing he was singer in a deeper register but it did not sound good.

I like his 80's and 90's voice a lot better than the 70's one.

 

If that is so, that he forced himself to sing like that in the seventies, it could have contributed to the deterioration of his voice, especially in light of how often they toured.

Personally I think his '70s singing was his peak, it's disappointing that he lost the ability to sing high like that around 1979.

Very late reply but I don't think it did. He had a cold during the February 1978 dates which affected his vocals, which is why the London 1978 live album was shelved for so long.   He sounds excellent

I think the shift really showed on Signals. He could still sing all those songs now if he wanted to.

 

Freewill and Tom Sawyer still have some high pitch moments.

He could never ever do Freewill today. Well, he could, but it would be an utter disaster.

Forcing himself to sing that high definitely hurt his vocal cords after time.

There are stages for me..

 

i) 2122/ATWAS tour - Peak Banshee wail oh for a pristine audience/soundboard or multi-track from April 1977

ii) PeW things a kicked down a half-notch, the toll of the Hemispheres Tour has been paid but I could be very happy with a Geddy voice circa 1980-1981, no complaints at all

iii) Signals album/tour - this is the clear break. The attack is just not there and the songs reflect that. He can still easily muster up the old Geddy for that verse in Freewill but that is now the exception

iv) P/G-RTB pretty consistent imo a very gradual decline

v) CP/T4E - hmm....

 

vi) VT-R40 - it is what it is and whatever
