Relayer2112
My two favorites are Tubular Bells and Amarok by Mike Oldfield. There is some singing in both, but I count them as instrumental albums.

Malignant Narcissist
All Joe Satriani albums I've heard but especially:- Surfing with the Alien Flying in a blue dream Mike Oldfield's Crisis album has a great Instrumental piece on side 1 (which provides the albums title). Most but not all of side 2 have vocals though such as the UK hit 'Moonlight Shadow'. I just think this is bit different from some of the other more symphonic (?) instrumentals or albums he wrote in that it's the most prog-rock album I've heard from him. Jazz provides a lot of instrumental albums and I quite like:-Charles Mingus' Mingus Ah Umand Miles Davis' Aura I have Steve Morse's Structural Damage too which is good. Although I suspect most of his albums are worth a listen. Eric Johnson's Ah Via Musicom and Tones are good too.
Malignant Narcissist
Also Frank Zappa Waka/Jawaka Frank Zappa The Grand Wazoo for his big band rock/jazz (mostly) instrumental stuff As someone mentioned, the One Night in San Francisco live album is great from Al Di Meola, Paco De Lucia and John Mclaughlin. Very fast acoustic playing. The Contemporary Guitar Sampler album is a good selection of folk guitar instrumentals - by players like Bert Jansch, John Renbourn, Gordon Giltrap and a few others, and is worth a listen if you like that sort of thing. RushFanForever
(1959) (1977) (1980) (1984) (1985) As a bonus, I'll throw in this one even though it isn't a full instrumental album per se. tangy
I listen to a fair amount of instrumental music. Ozric Tentacles are my fave. Funky yet heavy at times. Techno metal reggae acoustic ambient world beat goodness. Liquid tension experiment. Portnoy, petrucci and rudesses finest playing. If you like the music of dream theater but not the singing this is for you Of all the great guitarists i have seen ( vai, satch, johnson, petrucci, metheny, di meola etc etc) Buckethead is in a league of his own. Been getting into hidria spacefolk lately. Most intense instrumental show i have ever was behold the arctopus!

Shockwave Supernova is probably the best of his recent records. As for Steve Vai, I rate Real Illusions: Reflections very highly, and Steve Morse Band`s Split Decision is great, along with Southern Steel/ Structural Damage/ Outstanding in their Field. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UNlCd9NMzu4

Will found out shortly if the quality is high throughout.
