I said if love was so transcendent

I don't understand these boundaries

She said just don't disappoint me

You know how complex women are

I'll be around

If you don't let me down

Too far

It was just before sunrise

When we started on traditional roles

She said sure I'll be your partner

But don't make too many demands

I see what you did there.

Neil Pearts's words for Middletown Dreams lyrics:

Peart (Guitar For The Practicing Musician, 1986): "There's so much chemistry involved and there's so many intangible things that happen. There are songs where the music has been better than the lyrics or the lyrics better than the music. I think 'Middletown Dreams' is a good marriage of lyrics and music. 'Mystic Rhythms' is another one." - www.songfacts.com

Sometimes two mediocre partners have a good marriage. At least they may be happy. Those outside of it mostly ignore it, kind of like the meandering, dull Middletown Dreams...I'm not sure there's a song that killed my interest in Rush as much as that one.

2112 - Discovery. Ugh.

Noooooo...

bite your tongue

See how it sings like a sad heart

and joyously screams out its pain.

Sounds that build high like a mountain.

Or notes that fall gently like rain.

I love those lyrics.

Those are great. "What can this strange device be....?" and "It's got wires that vibrate...", maybe not so much.

Well how else is he supposed to convey 'finding a guitar'?! (An instrument (I might add) he has never seen the likes of before)

What the hell is that?!

I don't know, that's just not as... how to say it?...lyrical.

Dog years

It's the season of the itch

Dog years

With every scratch it reappears

Dog years

For every sad son of a bitch

Dog years

With his tail between his ears

NO!! These lyrics are excellent!!

Excellent cheese.

I don't know. Maybe they could have started the song with some sound effects to convey a location, and then have Alex clumsily tune the guitar as if he were a novice. That might convey discovery.

:P

But how do you get from sound effects of location and tuning to the 'See how...' lyrics without the segue of 'What can this strange device be'? You don't. It wouldn't make sense. The cheesy lines have to be there to build up to the good ones. I guess it comes down to into every good song sometimes a little cheese must fall.

Ok, branching off from the 'Big Money' thread...

A few of you know my loathing for Middletown Dreams and Emotion detector.

I think the lyrics

dreams flow across the heartland

or

When we lift the covers from our feelings

are about as cheesy as they come.

Which lyrics strike the cheesy cord for you?

Have no cheese to add, but am happy to meet another Middletown Dreams loather. Never understood the hype over it.

One of my favorite song lyrics. The entire song just speaks to me about those desires we have and what we want out of life, but just dont have the wherewithal to go after them...for any number of reasons.

It's the 'Dreams flow across the heartland' that makes me cringe.

I expected better from Neil.

I love that line.

Time Stand Still. The entire song is a heaping mound of cheese.

I'm surprised. I don't think I've ever heard anyone say they didn't like the lyrics. First time for everything

Where's the cheese here...?

I turn my back to the wind

To catch my breath,

Before I start off again.

Driven on,

Without a moment to spend

To pass an evening

With a drink and a friend

I let my skin get too thin

I'd like to pause,

No matter what I pretend

Like some pilgrim-

Who learns to transcend-

Learns to live

As if each step was the end

Time stand still-

I'm not looking back

But I want to look around me now

See more of the people

And the places that surround me now

Freeze this moment a little bit longer

Make each sensation a little bit stronger

Experience slips away...

I turn my face to the sun

Close my eyes.

Let my defences down-

All those wounds

That I can't get unwound

I let my past go too fast

No time to pause-

If I could slow it all down

Like some captain,

Whose ship runs aground-

I can wait until the tide comes around

Make each impression a little bit stronger

Freeze this motion a little bit longer

The innocence slips away...

Summer's going fast,

Nights growing colder

Children growing up-

Old friends growing older

Experience slips away...

You know, that song has some great lyrics.

I let my past go too fast

No time to pause-

If I could slow it all down

Like some captain,

Whose ship runs aground-

Seems like Captain Obvious stuff to me. Doesn't pretty much everybody say this to themselves at least 1000 times in their lifetimes?

And THAT is what makes the lyrics connect with the listener.

One of my all time favorite songs from a lyrical standpoint. AWESOME AWESOME AWESOME.

I get your point, but if I want that kind of connection, there are plenty of other bands with 'hit" songs I could find that sort of connection with. I much prefer Neil's more complex and thought provoking lyrics, like Between the Wheels, Vital Signs, Natural Science, etc. These are songs that are much more unique to Rush, both musically and lyrically speaking.

I like Counterparts overall, but man, some of those lyrics...Nobody's Hero, Alien Shore, The Speed of Love...just no, bruh.

Love is born with solar flares from two magnetic poles.

Wasn't "Counterparts" supposed to be a loose concept about relationships?

Their "love" album, so to speak?

SoL is easily in my Bottom 10. Probably Bottom 5, possibly Bottom 3.

"S-O-L", yeah it fits.

I can at least say that the vocals aren't a total bust like the rest of it. That's as nice as I can be with SoL.

Speaking of Counterparts

Double Agent:

Wilderness of Mirrors.

That line always irritates me. I know T.S. Elliot first penned it. And it's not necessarily cheesy. But it irritates me none-the-less.

Among my least favorite Rush songs

In the house where nobody laughs

And nobody sleeps

In the house where love lies dying

And the shadows creep

A little girl hides, shaking,

With her hands on her ears

Pushing back the tears, 'til the pain disappears

Mama says some ugly words

Daddy pounds the wall

They can fight about their little girl later

Right now they don't care at all

No matter what they say...

No matter what they say...

Everyday people

Everyday shame

Everyday promise

Shot down in flames

Everyday sunrise

Another everyday story

Rise from the ashes

A blaze of everyday glory

In the city where nobody smiles

And nobody dreams

In the city where desperation

Drives the bored to extremes

Just one spark of decency

Against a starless night

One glow of hope and dignity

A child…

Just one spark of decency

Against a starless night

One glow of hope and dignity

A child can follow the light

No matter what they say

No matter what they say...

If the future's looking dark

We're the ones who have to shine

If there's no one in control

We're the ones who draw the line

Though we live in trying times

We're the ones who have to try

Though we know that time has wings

We're the ones who have to fly

I'm curious what you find so tought provoking about these lyrics, in comparison to Time Stand Still.

We can fall from rockets red glare, down to brother can you spare... another war, another wasteland, and another lost generation.

I understand where you're coming from in questioning this, and agree that most of this song is rather simple, lyrically speaking. But I think this one verse takes the listener/reader quite a bit deeper. My impression is that Neil is suggesting that our elected officials have, at times in our history, taken our country into war mainly for financial reasons (profits and/or to uplift the economy). Incidentally, I think it was no coincidence whatsoever that this song was "pulled out of the vaults" for the R30 tour. I want to emphasize that this is just my take and my opinion. To my knowledge neither Neil nor Rush have ever commented on the meaning of this verse or the song in general, or indicated that it's inclusion in the R30 set list was in response to the Iraq War.

I like that the song's lyrics are less literal and have room for interpretation. I think that's one Neil's shortcomings as a lyricist, being overly clear to the point of pedantic.

#yearofthepedant

So, what you're saying is "when these days have passed long ago" aren't really necessary after he starts with "when they turn the pages of history". I can see that.... :)
