Mystic Slipperman
I said if love was so transcendentI don't understand these boundariesShe said just don't disappoint meYou know how complex women areI'll be aroundIf you don't let me downToo farIt was just before sunriseWhen we started on traditional rolesShe said sure I'll be your partnerBut don't make too many demands *Bleh* Tiny writing on a messageboard is a Cold Fire. laughedatbytime
Neil Pearts's words for Middletown Dreams lyrics: Peart (Guitar For The Practicing Musician, 1986): "There's so much chemistry involved and there's so many intangible things that happen. There are songs where the music has been better than the lyrics or the lyrics better than the music. I think 'Middletown Dreams' is a good marriage of lyrics and music. 'Mystic Rhythms' is another one." - www.songfacts.comSometimes two mediocre partners have a good marriage. At least they may be happy. Those outside of it mostly ignore it, kind of like the meandering, dull Middletown Dreams...I'm not sure there's a song that killed my interest in Rush as much as that one. goose
2112 - Discovery. Ugh.Noooooo... bite your tongue See how it sings like a sad heart and joyously screams out its pain.Sounds that build high like a mountain.Or notes that fall gently like rain. I love those lyrics. Those are great. "What can this strange device be....?" and "It's got wires that vibrate...", maybe not so much.

Maybe they could have started the song with some sound effects to convey a location, and then have Alex clumsily tune the guitar as if he were a novice. That might convey discovery. :P

It wouldn't make sense. The cheesy lines have to be there to build up to the good ones. I guess it comes down to into every good song sometimes a little cheese must fall.
Mithrandir
Ok, branching off from the 'Big Money' thread... A few of you know my loathing for Middletown Dreams and Emotion detector. I think the lyrics dreams flow across the heartland or When we lift the covers from our feelings are about as cheesy as they come. Which lyrics strike the cheesy cord for you? Have no cheese to add, but am happy to meet another Middletown Dreams loather. Never understood the hype over it.One of my favorite song lyrics. The entire song just speaks to me about those desires we have and what we want out of life, but just dont have the wherewithal to go after them...for any number of reasons. It's the 'Dreams flow across the heartland' that makes me cringe. I expected better from Neil. I love that line.
Mithrandir
Time Stand Still. The entire song is a heaping mound of cheese. I'm surprised. I don't think I've ever heard anyone say they didn't like the lyrics. First time for everythingWhere's the cheese here...? I turn my back to the windTo catch my breath,Before I start off again.Driven on,Without a moment to spendTo pass an eveningWith a drink and a friend I let my skin get too thinI'd like to pause,No matter what I pretendLike some pilgrim-Who learns to transcend-Learns to liveAs if each step was the end Time stand still-I'm not looking backBut I want to look around me nowSee more of the peopleAnd the places that surround me now Freeze this moment a little bit longerMake each sensation a little bit strongerExperience slips away... I turn my face to the sunClose my eyes.Let my defences down-All those woundsThat I can't get unwound I let my past go too fastNo time to pause-If I could slow it all downLike some captain,Whose ship runs aground-I can wait until the tide comes around Make each impression a little bit strongerFreeze this motion a little bit longerThe innocence slips away... Summer's going fast,Nights growing colderChildren growing up-Old friends growing olderExperience slips away... You know, that song has some great lyrics. I let my past go too fastNo time to pause-If I could slow it all downLike some captain,Whose ship runs aground- Seems like Captain Obvious stuff to me. Doesn't pretty much everybody say this to themselves at least 1000 times in their lifetimes? And THAT is what makes the lyrics connect with the listener. One of my all time favorite songs from a lyrical standpoint. AWESOME AWESOME AWESOME. Edited August 17, 2017 by Mithrandir

One of my all time favorite songs from a lyrical standpoint. AWESOME AWESOME AWESOME. I get your point, but if I want that kind of connection, there are plenty of other bands with 'hit" songs I could find that sort of connection with. I much prefer Neil's more complex and thought provoking lyrics, like Between the Wheels, Vital Signs, Natural Science, etc. These are songs that are much more unique to Rush, both musically and lyrically speaking.

Love is born with solar flares from two magnetic poles. SoL is easily in my Bottom 10. Probably Bottom 5, possibly Bottom 3. "S-O-L", yeah it fits. I can at least say that the vocals aren't a total bust like the rest of it. That's as nice as I can be with SoL.

Alien Girl
Speaking of Counterparts Double Agent: Wilderness of Mirrors. That line always irritates me. I know T.S. Elliot first penned it. And it's not necessarily cheesy. But it irritates me none-the-less.

Nate2112
Among my least favorite Rush songs In the house where nobody laughsAnd nobody sleepsIn the house where love lies dyingAnd the shadows creepA little girl hides, shaking,With her hands on her earsPushing back the tears, 'til the pain disappearsMama says some ugly wordsDaddy pounds the wallThey can fight about their little girl laterRight now they don't care at allNo matter what they say...No matter what they say...Everyday peopleEveryday shameEveryday promiseShot down in flamesEveryday sunriseAnother everyday storyRise from the ashesA blaze of everyday gloryIn the city where nobody smilesAnd nobody dreamsIn the city where desperationDrives the bored to extremesJust one spark of decencyAgainst a starless nightOne glow of hope and dignityA child… Just one spark of decencyAgainst a starless nightOne glow of hope and dignityA child can follow the lightNo matter what they sayNo matter what they say...If the future's looking darkWe're the ones who have to shineIf there's no one in controlWe're the ones who draw the lineThough we live in trying timesWe're the ones who have to tryThough we know that time has wingsWe're the ones who have to fly Edited August 20, 2017 by Nate2112

We can fall from rockets red glare, down to brother can you spare... another war, another wasteland, and another lost generation. I understand where you're coming from in questioning this, and agree that most of this song is rather simple, lyrically speaking. But I think this one verse takes the listener/reader quite a bit deeper. My impression is that Neil is suggesting that our elected officials have, at times in our history, taken our country into war mainly for financial reasons (profits and/or to uplift the economy). Incidentally, I think it was no coincidence whatsoever that this song was "pulled out of the vaults" for the R30 tour. I want to emphasize that this is just my take and my opinion. To my knowledge neither Neil nor Rush have ever commented on the meaning of this verse or the song in general, or indicated that it's inclusion in the R30 set list was in response to the Iraq War. I can see that.... :)
