How do you feel about Rush song "The Big Money"?

    • It's one of my fave Rush tunes, hands down.

Summer 1985 ... I had just graduated high school and was putting ads in the Aquarian music paper looking for other musicians to start a band with ..

 

I got together with a bassist named Ronnie, who, like me, was a big Rush fan .. We talked all the time about Rush, and about the changes in the band's sound and vibe - neither of us were crazy about it, but we were both excited about the new album that was coming out .. I remember hearing things about Rush returning to heavier sound, and we had hopes that this new album would put them back where they belong ..

 

Big Money was the first song I heard, and I remember calling Ronnie to talk about it .. We were mortified and agreed that was pretty much the end of Rush ..

 

Time really hasn't changed much in this regard

Too bad for you and Ronnie.

 

An interesting aside ( and this is true )

 

Ronnie and I ended up meeting a drummer, who, at the time, was playing around with the idea of having electronic triggers on his body so he could "play drums" by hitting these triggers with his hands ..

 

It was the dumbest ******* thing I had ever heard of, but Ronnie liked it

 

Needless to say, we lost touch after that

I saw Fleetwood Mac and Mic Fleetwood did that during his drum solo.

 

 

 

 

 

 

It was dumb.

Those other two songs are strong!

 

Definitely agree Blue J, this is a very weak song to me. Not abhorrent but...I skip no issue.

Yeah, like I said, I'd still give it a C. I just think all of the other songs on the album are stronger than this one.

Without 'The Big Money' Power Windows would have been a perfect album.

You're the reason Rush never toured Australia.

I like the lyrics and meaning behind them, but the music... nope. Too much synth... I hated seeing them play it live because the sequencers never seemed to stop. They really needed a keyboard player to do that one live.

Love it. It works for me on many levels. It brings back memories of those dumb rock station call-in shows where they pitted one new song against another new song. The Big Money won for 3 weeks straight. That was also my first Rush tour so hearing it live was a big deal. Sonically there is a lot going on which I like.

The only redeeming thing about Rush's synth era was that it was better than becoming a 80s hair metal band or power ballad band.
