STYX - Don't forget now kids

Recommended Posts

I wasn't much of a fan of Gone Gone Gone by its lonesome and still don't believe it to be a top tier song, but it is better now in context and following Overture.

About the only song I'm really apathetic about is Trouble With The Big Show and not because JY sings it (I actually do not hate his voice as some do), but because it's this weird, short, pretty schizophrenic transition piece. Kinda wish he'd had a single showcase song like These Are The Times, the amazing song from Cyclorama. But it's all a bit of picking nits really. Fantastic album.

My highlights are Locomotive, Khedive, The Outpost, Red Storm, Radio Silence, and The Greater Good...with no disrespect to the unmentioned tunes as well.

Really strong album.

Agreed about Trouble at the Big Show. The chorus is nice, but JY's vocals are pretty bad.

The back to back of Time May Bend and Ten Thousand Ways is really good. That kind of snuck up on me.

I love the record. It's a true, "Styx Album", and it sounds like a Styx album. Glad they recorded it all to 2" tape, because it has "that" sound.

Solid songs, great vocals, great playing, tells a story, and it sounds good. If you're a Styx fan, you'll like it.

One interesting note: Since the album was recorded all analog, it smooths everything out a little too evenly (this is normal). And like most recent recordings, whether analog or digital, it was mastered to sound better on radio, Mp3 or headphones, because of the increased compression that those mediums offer. SO, my point is, if you want the album to really Pop, then rip it to 320kbps Mp3 and have a listen. You'll be shocked at how much certain instruments come out, especially the drums.

No way Jose! I don't agree with you on James Young. I would never compare James to Ace, but I always look forward to the Ace songs on KISS records. I always look forward to a James Young song on a STYX record. Like "Heavy Metal Poisoning" and "Half Penny Two Penny" are JY staples. He is a big piece of STYX. He has great energy, he's a great guy, a great guitarist, and a great singer.

"Trouble At The Big Show" is a wonderful James Young song and for those of you who can't stand it, relax, it's on 2 and a half penny minutes.

OK, I'm just beyond excited that all of you (well, maybe it's only 10 of you, but still) love this as much as I do, I thought I was the only Styx nerd here....

I agree with mostly everyone. Trouble with the Big Show is a typical JY song and probably my least favorite. I love Locomotive, Red Storm, Radio Silence and Gowan's piano on Khedive is brill.

I will say it's gone up for me.

Best Styx album in a LONG ass time''

9/10

Kansas surprised me too with their recent record, who cares if it's really nothing new.

Just walked back from the show!

All I have to say is that I was shocked tonight!

Don Felder opened up and blew everyone away.

He played all the old Eagles hits and did the track off of "Heavy Metal." The greatest animated film ever! JMO!

Tommy Shaw came out and played guitar and banjo on "Take It Easy" with Don. Epic,

Then Todd came out and played tambourine and the REO guitar player came out to play on Hotel California!

Felder of course brought out his white double neck for that song!

STYX was amazing too. I wanted more of "The Mission" but the set was great as always.

As for REO, I have no comment. Well.... ok....

THEY SUCK!

Don Felder blew them out of the water.

Okay, let's be serious.

I like James Young and he is a key component to the Styx sound, but a great singer? LOL, right. His vocal style is basically "carnival barker" style, which worked when he was younger on some songs, like Miss America or Snowblind or Lords of the Ring, but at his age now, it just sounds ridiculous. When they did all of The Grand Illusion, he sounded god awful doing the "Hahahaha, Superstars" part in Superstars that DDY originally sang. I am sure there is a reason he barely does any lead vocals on the new album (or has never done much lead vocals in general). "Great singers" get more than a token song per album.

I understand what you are saying about his vocals but to me they are "great" for Styx. All of the vocalists in STYX create a "great" sound together. They compliment each other together as one. ??Dennis/Gowan Shaw Young. GREATNESS!

I absolutely don't agree at all. I had fifth row center last night. James nailed his part on "Miss America." An EPIC song. To each their own. I'm very serious. I love James Young. I just scored a 6th row ticket to see STYX in some small indian casino in Jackson! It's the same venue where I saw Ace Frehley. I can't believe STYX is playing this small joint. Can't wait!

Skipper was also a generic soda made for Safeway back in the day. It's a Dr. Pepper flavored carbonated beverage.

I drank many a Dr. Skipper back in the day!

Speaking of back in the day, I used to work at Safeway in Alamo back in the mid 80's. Some rich dude who lived there would always drive his incredible STYX van to the store! It was red and black. The sides of the van both had the "Pieces Of Eight" album cover spray painted it them! It was EPIC!!!! Wish I had a picture!

Last weekend I saw a van with a STYXLVR license plate and I totally regret not getting a thumbs-up selfie with it!

How was the show, Earl?

Absolutely off the hook! Place was PACKED! Don Felder opened up and literally stole the show. REO Speedwagon was dreadful. STYX was off the star charts! Great energy! Awesome set list. 12 songs. 3 from The Mission.

"Light Up" was amazing. James had everyone turn on their smartphone flashlights. Confetti and streamers shot out of cannons twice at near the end.

I can't believe STYX is playing Jackson Rancheria on September 17th! The hotel is already sold out of rooms!! I'm at the Holiday Inn Express 3 miles away.

Would have been cool to see Felder, and a bummer that REO was bad. They were great when I saw them 20 years ago. Maybe I'll head over the hill in September with the youngling for a STYXfest.

Yes buddy! It would be great to see you again! I've never been a big REO Speedfagon fan to begin with. The band is actually very good, it's just that Kevin Cronin was driving me fuckking nuts! His voice is so weak as if someone cut off his tiny nut sacks with a rusty razor blade. And idiots rip Geddy's voice? Kevin looks like an old grandma chick with a dick. Ultra liberal too. Wouldn't stop talking about how our country is going through tough times again like in the 70's.

Just SHUT THE FUKK UP AND PLAY MUSIC!

I don't need politics in my rock and roll!!

Kevin Cronin SUCKS!

I really love the song, "Hundred Million Miles From Home".

This albums sounds better with every spin.

I listened to it twice last night and thought it was highly unoriginal and mundane. I wanted to like it and any Styx without Dennis's syrupy influence has got to be an improvement post Pieces Of Eight" but "meh".

I was thinking if you took these very same songs, same arrangements, etc. and had the original Kansas lineup perform it, it would sound incredible. So, Styx has made a great sounding Styx & Kansas album. :) Edited by ReGorLaTroy

all i know is i'm stunned that kansas and Styx.......2 bands i'd completly given up on......came out with 2 Great albums after so many years. and again i say. Screw the "but they didn't evolve in their sound" argument. point is they both came through.
