Chris Cornell has died aged 52

Recommended Posts

Chris Cornell mentioned that RUSH was one of his favorite bands in this backstage press interview at the 2013 Rock and Roll Hall Fame ceremony

beginning at the 1:42 mark.

Heart is actually performing on Kimmel tonight. You can bet they'll pay tribute to him there.

I'm watching MTV with SG on live from the artists den. This is painful to watch. I'm just thinking..... what the hell? Why? Maybe he was sick. When they cut to the brief interviews, Chris is looking a bit thin. I don't know. We can speculate till the cows come home. We'll find out sooner or later. Just another damned shame...

In these times, whenever somebody commits suicide....I can't help but think about how they could have been saved...what could have been done or said that could have changed their mind....

Damn, I mean...even though I'm not a huge fan of Soundgarden, this hits uncomfortably close to home :(

I have been reading about this. He was a handsome man.

Something doesn't sit right with the suicide angle.

Maybe I am reading sanitized accounts about him, but it is being said that he was a very warm, giving, and loving man, and that he and his wife ran a charity to help children.

Has his wife made any statement?

Here's the statement from his wife...

http://www.tmz.com/2017/05/18/chris-cornell-suicide-death-wife/

Chris always seemed to be the reclusive, tortured artist type but seemed kind and respectful in all reports that I've read. As other reports stated, he seemed just 'off' in their performance last night and it was somewhat of a trainwreck.

One thing doesn't sit right. She said she spoke to him both before after the show and all seemed fine and yet apparently she asked a friend to break into his room to check on him. Why, if when Last she spoke to him all seemed normal? She claims he was neither depressed nor suicidal and yet she was concerned enough...

It's possible his wife wanted someone to check on him because she tried to get a hold of him and couldn't. May be as simple as that and not anything more.

I have had a heavy heart all day about this. Truly sad.

I played Seasons in my car on my morning drive and just broke into tears. Chris was a giant. One of the greatest lead rock vocalists I had ever heard. Temple Of The Dog is one of my 10 favorite albums of all time. I wanted so badly to go to one of the shows but it was not meant to be.

I will always remember Cornell as a guy who brought such power and passion into his songs and really had a way of touching my soul with his incredible song writing.

We lost a great one.

It also saddens me that his children lost their father to a horrible disease. Depression is a powerful and dark disease. One that I don’t truly understand as I have never had any of those issues personally. But my long time friend and drummer of 30 years has battled depression ever since I have known him. It is a m*********er.

May he rest in peace and may his family heal and hopefully get closure at some point. It has to be so hard for his children to understand and grasp what just happened.

My god man.

Just goes to show you that no one is immune. Someone you think has everything and yet inside is darkness.

When I saw Chris with Soundgarden a few years ago, their set was practically flawless. It was almost a soldout crowd. I owned his Soundgarden and Audioslave CD's, as well as his solo work. It was hard to find Temple of the Dog in the music stores here. I can remember hearing his 007 theme song while I was watching Casino Royale. It sent shivers up my spine. In the late 2000's I used to have that Audioslave song Be Yourself on repeat. It was like a lullaby to me. I Am the Highway and Like a Stone were also classics that still haunt me to this day. Some people can see right through you. Chris Cornell could sing right through you. He had a voice that spanned multiple octaves. I watched his last performance and I could see the pain in his eyes. So sad that his personal demons overpowered him. The world lost a very talented man today.

Boots!

I have been on this Forum for over 11 years. As I am not a fan of his solo work and I only love the first Audiosoave record, your post is excellent.

I love your passion.

I am so pissed right now. I was in the city with two of my best friends to and some lame ass chick I was dating at the time to see Night Ranger at The Fillmore.

San Francisco was all about Temple Of The Dog that night. I was so pissed. I remember sitting at this bar in SF with my friends thinking fuckk Night Ranger.

Inside my head I wanted to leave the bar and go find a ticket and get my ass into Temple Of Dog.. I fuckked it all up.

But!

This other girl I am still dating lives in Seattle. She went to Temple Of The Dog a few nights before. She was sweet enough to buy me a Temple Of The Dog hoodie!

So at least I have some swag from that show.

I was thinking today how much I love Andrew Wood the most out of all of the "grunge" Seattle singers. Chris was always my number 2.

Now Wood and Cornell are dead. Cobain too of course.

A trifecta of Northwest talent dead. Suicide and OD.

Please don't "Blame It On The Rain."

Love,

Milli Vanilli

Ok that was bad.

Andrew Wood very likely was the best if all the so called "grunge" vocalists. His passing was a great tragedy. I played Mother Love Bone on my way to work this morning! Breathtaking vocal work and an all round excellent album.

For all those who decry the so called "grunge" era as being really poor rock n roll, all the bands had great musicianship that to my ears took music back to the basics, and the vocalists had a raw power and energy that nothing in haor metal could ever match, bar maybe Guns N Roses in their prime.

Amazing era for rock and it's so sad to think we have lost the majority of the defining icons of that age.

I wouldn't ever say that hair metal was ever meant to be emotionally powerful music. Maybe with the exception of a few power ballads (good ones, like Love Bites and Still Loving You), it really wasn't meant to make you feel any sort of emotion other than "lets party and have a good time."

That's definitley one of the areas where grunge did excel at was bringing emotion into rock music, albiet there are a lot of modern metal bands who make better sounding music and bring a lot of emotion into it. An example being Lacuna Coil.

The 52 year-old Soundgarden frontman had a prescription for Ativan, the family said, and may have taken a higher dosage. Attorney Kirk Pasich noted that Ativan can cause paranoid or suicidal thoughts, slurred speech and impaired judgement.

Ativan is a tranquilizer and anti-anxiety medication that is sometimes used as a sleeping aid.

"When we spoke after the show, I noticed he was slurring his words; he was different,” his wife added. “When he told me he may have taken an extra Ativan or two, I contacted security and asked that they check on him.”

I know what you mean. But I would never want to listen to a Pearl Jam or Alice In Chains album with Lacuna Coil style clean production, but I would love to see a rawer, dare I say it "grunge" style Lacuna Coil.

I think that era had great sound that enhanced the music through and through. It all went wrong when bands like Creed took the grunge appeal and made it plastic.

I think there's more to this.

In any event, any sudden death is tragic.

The Cornell family and the press had better dig into this. It could help get such nasty drugs off the market.

Yeah, I think the suicide angle may have been premature. I'm waiting for a complete report before jumping tonthat conclusion.

Further statement from his wife:

"Chris's death is a loss that escapes words and has created an emptiness in my heart that will never be filled. As everyone who knew him commented, Chris was a devoted father and husband. He was my best friend. His world revolved around his family first and of course, his music, second. He flew home for Mother's Day to spend time with our family. He flew out mid-day Wednesday, the day of the show, after spending time with the children. When we spoke before the show, we discussed plans for a vacation over Memorial Day and other things we wanted to do. When we spoke after the show, I noticed he was slurring his words; he was different. When he told me he may have taken an extra Ativan or two, I contacted security and asked that they check on him. What happened is inexplicable and I am hopeful that further medical reports will provide additional details. I know that he loved our children and he would not hurt them by intentionally taking his own life"

That certainly doesn't sound like someone ready to toss it all away. So if this turns out to be due to over-medication, it makes it even more tragic.

:( Sheds some light on the whole thing for sure.

Ativan is a slippery slope, from what I understand. My ex-wife had a prescription for it once, and I remember her asking to be taken off of it because she didn't like the side effects....

This whole thing is so damn sad... I still can't listen to his music yet, and I want to celebrate his talent and voice.

We can speculate all we like. But only Chris knew the why.......he's gone. best we can do i think is spin the records, share the music so it stays alive and respect the man's legacy,
