When you greet a stranger, look at his shoes

Keep your money in your shoes, put your trouble behind

When you greet a stranger, look at her hands

Keep your money in your hands, put your travel behind

Who are you going to call for, what do you have to say

Keep your hat on your head

Home is a long way away

At the end of the day, I'll forget your name

I'd like it here if I could leave and see you from a long way away

When you greet a stranger, look at his shoes

Keep you memories in your shoes, put your travel behind

Who are you going to call for, what do you have to say

Keep your hat on your head

Home is a long way away

At the end of the day, when there are no friends

When there are no lovers, who are you going to call for

What do you have to change

A familiar face, a foreign place, I'll forget your name

I'd like it here if I could leave and see you from a long way away

Who are you going to call for, what do you have to say

Keep your hat on your head

Home is a long way away

There's a secret stigma, reaping wheel

Diminish, a carnival of sorts

Chronic town, poster torn, reaping wheel

Stranger, stranger to these parts

Gentlemen don't get caught, cages under cage

Gentlemen don't get caught

Box cars are pulling out of town

Box cars are pulling out of town

Box cars are pulling out of town

Cages under, cages under, cages under cage

Cages under, cages under, cages under cage

There's a secret stigma reaping wheel

Stranger, stranger to these parts

Chronic town, poster torn, reaping wheel

Diminish, stranger

Boxcars are pulling a carnival of sorts

Out of town, out of town

Well, i dont listen to these guys much anymore. But i enjoyed them greatly back in the day. They were one of the bands that opened me up to the alt stuff as it came out. No small feat for a life long metal head lol.

Got to see them a couple times before they got really big

I prefer the IRS stuff myself but Green, HiFi and Collapse are all top shelf.

Also really like the Live In Dublin release. They reached back and pulled out some really obscure stuff from Reckoning and Pageant two excellent albums.

Document remains one of my favorite albums by anyone ever. Its like Animals or Signals. Definitive.

REM's music also easily fits in film. This is best evident in Vanilla Sky.

Trivia: The song "All the Right Friends" which was on the Vanilla Sky soundtrack was first written by Buck & Stipe BEFORE they even met Mills & Berry. For whatever reason, it was left off Murmur though it was recorded.

My brother is more of a metal head than me. He was once criticizing my fondness for REM. Then one day, my REM CDs were missing. I found them in my brothers room.

Document is a better album than both those by far.

Fables of the Reconstruction is one of my favorite albums of theirs, truly on the strength of just one song. There are a lot of other good things on it too, but still...Driver 8 is just stupendous. The driving rhythm (no pun intended) that opens it up is just...ahhhhhh!

I am loving my REM revisit.

I have yet to hear the five most recent but I will once I've devoured the first ten.

From Lifes Rich Pageant, this track really speaks to the genius of Michael Stipe. The song isn't really that special musically...pleasant melody based on a nice use of arpeggios. But Stipe's vocals and brilliantly rhythmic lyrics make the song soar, as do Mike Mills' harmonies.

Favorite songs? Fall On Me is up there.

This one really stood out to me!

I have yet to really name a favourite song other than The Great Beyond. There are literally dozens and dozens of classic songs! Just on the first ten albums as well.

I have had a hard time getting into Fables. ODD, because it's produced by Joe Boyd, and I LOVE his production style with the Brit-folk bands (Fairport etc).

The live versions of these songs (other than Driver 8 which I already loved) have gotten me to keep giving the album another chance.

Maps and Legends, Life and How to Live it... especially those two.

I love "These Days".

Stipe has said that he wrote "These Days" while coming out a very dark period, and the song was an epiphany for him. That translates through the music and lyrics. Classic R.E.M. song.

Another one that I love and I don't think has been mentioned is You Are the Everything, from Green. I think of that song from a very emotional perspective- I think it comes through as purely positive, though, rather than difficult.
