Well I liked Sunny day real estate a while back. Im not sure about this genre or any genre for that matter. I suppose Grandaddy may fall under this, and I really like Grandaddy. The Rentals and Weezer too, though their albums got very samey.

So here we go, a selection of bands and songs in a sort of chronological order that are identified as emo.

The nineties blossomed with hundreds of amazing, often short lived bands, that provided an entire generation with great music.

Also, emo is often considered along the same lines as post-hardcore. During the nineties, "emo" became synonymous over time with the idea of "soft". So by 2000 bands with an accessible sound tended to be lumped under "emo", if they were heavier, often "post-hardcore". Many bands blurred the lines between the two, notably At The Drive-In, Glassjaw and Thrice (who deviated from their hardcore roots almost completely with the release of The Alchemy Index in 2007).

Starting in 1985, Rites Of Spring with Deeper Than Inside. Born from the then flourishing Washington D.C. hardcore scene, Rites Of Spring immediately stood out due to the abrasive nature of their sound, contrasted with often very soft lyrics:

They are often credited too with helping forge hardcore away from the often political nature of the themes, and into "softer" territory. Overtime, influences from bands such as My Bloody Valentine and The Smiths took root.
