Xanadoood
He's a brilliant drummer..have a listen to Songs for the Deaf by QOTSA if you need convincing. That's the first thing that popped into my head. Great playing on that.
bathory
he's a good drummer who plays for the song. but as far as overrated or underrated, he's neither. he's not even really known as a drummer anymore in rock circles. he's nobody's favorite, nobody's least favorite either if you've heard the probot side project or his work with queens of the stone age, you'll see that he's capable of playing beyond what's required for nirvana.
EagleMoon
I think he's a really good drummer and very creative but I think he's better as a front man/guitarist.
Fordgalaxy
Oh yay. Another thread so people can post their opinions based on how much they like a band or bands the guy in question was in.
RUSHHEAD666
On the majority of lists I saw he is in top 10.I think as a rock drummer he is slightly above average and definitely doesn't deserve to be on any list of top 10.What do you think, is this guy overrated? Dave has great energy and power but his chops are basic and boring. He can't sing either yet ironically he's the most talented one out of NIRVANA. Also a RUSH fan so I respect him. I was there on that sacred night when Dave and Taylor inducted the boys. One of the greatest moments of my life. FOO FIGHTERS SUCK!

So yeah, probably overrated. Edited January 28, 2017 by Mr. Not

tangy
Overhyped not overrated. From what i can see he is a fine player. I still feel he is overhyped as a darling of the music media.

I still feel he is overhyped as a darling of the music media.I think he's earned the attention by virtue of his personality and productivity. One of the few things I think the media have got just about right.
stoopid
On the majority of lists I saw he is in top 10. Found this hard to believe, so I looked around for myself: Rolling Stone - #27 http://www.rollingst...l-time-20160331LA Weekly - #7 http://www.laweekly....ll-time-5199372Total Drumsets - #92 http://www.totaldrum...k-drummers.htmlLoudwire - #10 http://loudwire.com/...otogallery-1=59The Richest - #9 http://www.theriches...rs-of-all-time/ User-voted:The Top Tens - #6 http://www.thetopten...-rock-drummers/Ranker - #9 http://www.ranker.co...ers-of-all-time Alright then ...I don't remember hearing anything amazing from him back when I listened to Nirvana quite a lot (when I was 14) but I guess I'll have to revisit and pay more attention. Signs point to "overrated" :)On the majority of lists I saw he is in top 10.I think as a rock drummer he is slightly above average and definitely doesn't deserve to be on any list of top 10.What do you think, is this guy overrated?Links to these lists? prolix
Good drummer, don't get me wrong, but overrated and should not make top ten lists.
Powderfinger
He's great but not the greatest of the alt rock era. Chamberlain of Smashing Pumpkins is better. Yes, Chamberlain was outstanding at his peak. Matt Cameron comes to mind, too. His work with Soundgarden was awesome.
Xanadoood
If we are talking chops, Taylor Hawkins is better IMO.
thirteen
I like Dave Grohl on drums. That way he ain't trying to sing or play guitar.
Syrinx
He is a great rock drummer but top ten all time?? No way. And i am a big fan of everything he has done, but seriously if you can't come up with 10 better rock drummers something is wrong.
