Gilmour, Van Halen, Young and Lifeson. Four guitarists whose work I enjoy across their bodies of work.

Add Knopfler to that list.

So I guess I'm unsure about a top three, but Alex is in the Pantheon, for sure.

I like Knopfler, always tasteful, but I find if Im not actually listening to him I dont think about him too much.

If we and a top 100 guitar players thread someone would post 105. Too hard to narrow it down.

That's a good point which applies to me too.

Tony R is by far and away my biggest influence. :guitar:

I think you meant to post effluence not influence.

I think that could be said by me about a great many guitarists. I see names popping up here and there and think, "Oh yeah, there's another great player".

Given that the OP asks for just a binary response, listing guitarists numbering other than three is as valid as listing only three.

Oh and fyi David Gilmore is a great jazz guitarist who has played in bands with Jack DeJonette, Steve Coleman and Greg Osby. David Gilmour is the guitarist from Pink Floyd.

..and Gil Moore is a drummer ;)

Alex is so good I wish Geddy had never discovered keyboards, which kinda pushed Alex out of the mix in the 80's. Edited by thirteen

You could say they pushed Alex into a different roll, not that I approved of it though.

Rush should have stuck to whatever keys they could play with their feet and no more. For Geddy Lee to let go of his bass and step up to a keyboard is a mortal sin!

^^^ Agree with this post 100%

I can only imagine how a guitarist of Alex's skill level felt when he was relegated second place to Geddy's mediocre keyboard playing.

Big Al, David Gilmour, and Bob Mould.

Shoutout for Bob! Him, Alex and Richard Thompson have probably been my 3 faves over the years...
