Why RUSH doesnt have studio outtakes???

Excuse me if this info is easy to obtain, but im more than a casual fan, and still cant find out why its impossible to find any extra studio outtakes from this band. Every other band I like has between 2 and 10 studio tracks that didnt make albums throughout their career, but has resurfaced later. Ive googled it, and have listened to all podcasts w/ rush content. Ive heard many acknowledge it, but no reason why. Are these extra songs locked up never to be leaked for mainstream consumption or do they really not exist. I find it hard to believe that every demo or song idea they were working on made it on to an album, and those ideas/songs were just enough to fill an album.

 

Im dying for some insight on this. I would love to hear what everybody thinks or would appreciate a link to any discussions the group know about.

They don't have any. Rush is a very economical band in the studio.

I agree. IIRC they have said they don't "waste" any songs when they are recording.

Actually, I think this is pretty close to the truth. Not to lay it all on Neil, though...all three of them were very good at using every idea they had.

My understanding is that songs that didn't make the cut were cannibalized and used in other songs before those "well it was a good idea, but it didn't pan out" songs were ever put on tape. Natural Science is an example of that, I believe. So basically, all the songs Rush have recorded are all the songs they've written.

I have wondered about this too,but Geddy has said that everything is used ,lyrics and music,and if not it is burned.But surely they must have had alternate takes,guitar solos,etc.Look at the latest 2112 reissue.We get live tracks and cover versions.Perhaps they looked at what Jimmy Page did with Zeps reissues with reference mixes and backing tracks and said why bother.Sure the guys would have demo tracks at home but they wouldn't be intended for commercial release.Needless to sat they would be under 'Lock and Key'. I believe there is a quote from Alex in Visions that basically states that they wanted the albums to be strong statements. They didn't worry about singles. They focused on the albums. So to that end, any songs not strong enough for albums were never recorded. They felt that if it wasn't worth recording on the album then there was no sense in keeping it on a shelf. They must have had a tight shop in the studio to not let any outtakes get leaked outside.With modern technology,ie mobile phones etc,some unscruplous studio lacky could make a small fortune.

Pretty sure there was one of Counterparts alternate takes doing the rounds but I've never heard it.

I read a couple of the songs on Vapor Trails were completely rewritten musically, Earthshine may have been one?

I'll just echo what others have said. Rush always released the songs they recorded. I'm sure there were things left over but it was never anything that they felt was worth releasing. You'll never find any lost tracks from them. For better or worse, if they recorded a song it got put on the album.

 

They're the only band I can think of that doesn't seem to have bonus studio tracks or other recordings that never saw the light of day.

Thanks for the input e'rybody. Rush is more collaborative in their writing process than the other bands i was referring to, so I can see that there would not be a "battle of the songs" competition to determine what went on the album.

 

I guess, i should be happy the're still putting out decent stuff even today. I just always expected to see tons of that stuff surface once we entered the digital age.

I would bet that there is a version of Sir Gawain And The Green Knight in existence - among many other things as far as studio tracks ..

 

Announcing retirement is a very different thing than not having a still lucrative career ... I am sure these things will be released over time as anniversary editions and collector's editions appear
