didacticism. :blah:

Didacticism is the new pedantry.

Sez you!

:P

It was meant as a compliment!

No you didn't. What you said was that didacticism has usurped pedantry in modern colloquy. Any idiot can see that!

(NP's new book: "The Didactic Rider: Tales of a Pedant")

"Pedant" and any form of that word is written on TRF as frequently as Neil writes about sedimentary rock in his books...too damn much!

"Summers going fast, nights growing colder.

Children growing up, old friends growing older."

I am still very good friends with about 5-6 guys that have been Rush fans along with me for about 35 years. Our children are now older than we were when we first got into Rush, some much older. And me and my friends have grown older.....such nostalgic and sad lyrics..and they mean so much and hit home so hard.

I don't know if I can choose just one...however, the Hold Your Fire album is loaded with goodies, as far as heavy themes are concerned.

Vapor Trials and Presto are two others that I'd cite as having very strong lyrics.

VT is a strong album.

A very dark album lyrically for obvious reasons, but with patches of hope.

ceiling unlimited - world so wide - turn and turn again

feeling unlimited - still unsatisfied - changes never end

This means more to me than Xanadu's lyrics; although Xanadu is very carefully structured and very clever, you never get a sense of what the writer is like. You get a cool story with well thought-out lines, but you don't really see the guy holding the pen, if this makes sense. There's more directness in VT I guess is what I'm trying to say, less "cleverness" (same with his drum parts), which helps me connect more with what he's written. :finbar:

To me are Tears, Witch Hunt, Terriotories, The Pass, Scars, Avaiable Light, Peaceable Kingdom and the whole Hold Your Fire album.

Oh, what style of rhyming

Can be better with obscenity

A motionless telepathy

Or simply our realizing

Our world is quickly dying

And the heart is ever firing

That we shall be divining

Even with bad timing

The minds simply miming

The power of reviving

Of eras fallen out of trying

The simple words a mess

But yet we try to do our best

Even if its not the rest

The body so divine

I'm sure it will be fine

If we go on living

And forget about existing

The contamination of the brain

Is much worse than a little cane

The thoughts of anti-liberty

Were never our reality

The simple musical remedy

Will soon become a memory

So whats the point of robbery

Our world is ending soon

Around the bells of noon

The people like a monsoon

Will just become the past

The thoughts are like a blast

The limits are none

But the hours are done

The worlds by asunder

Through ol' humanities blunder

We die through he sound of thunder

I hope you enjoyed these rhymes

Someday you may call these mine

So don't waste no time

Your days are outnumbering

From our old past sundering

Nothing will be anything

So get on the go

Go from to and fro

I'm running out of words

So I hope that I am heard

The simple direction of man

Will fall into a caravan

I hope that we will never bend

But however this is the end

We're only immortal for a limited time.

The hours tick away, the cells tick away...

You can surrender without a prayer, but never really pray without surrender

You can fight, fight without ever winning, but never really win without a fight.

A lot of great ones mentioned here! Here are a few I did not see posted...

What you own is your own kingdom

What you do is your own glory

What you love is your own power

What you do is your own story

In your head is the answer

Let it guide you along

Let your heart be the anchor

And th beat of your song

( Neil's first great verse in my opinion )

The fawn eyed girl with sun brown legs dances on the edge of his dreams

( OK not deep, but I love this line! )

You can't soothe pain with sympathy

( soooooo true! )

You can twist perception, but reality won't budge

Who would hold the price

On the heads of the innocent children

For the want of immunity or a bowl of rice

If there is some immortal power to control the dice

I didn't know the girl

But I knew her family

All their lives where shattered in a nightmare of brutality

Tried to cart on, tried to bear the agony

Tried to hold some faith in the goodness of humanity

You can't tell yourself how to feel

( had to mention it again, soooo deep )

The snakes and arrows a child is heir to

are enough to leave a thousand cuts

My friends were dismayed to see me betrayed

but they knew they could never tell me

The future disappears into memory

with only a moment between

Forever dwells in that moment

Hope is what remains to be seen

We will pay the price,

But we will not count the cost
