Bumping this thread to say Kilroy Was Here might be my favorite Styx album.

You do love theatrical music of this sort more than me.

I say this...but I do absolutely adore Paradise Theater...

I really am glad that Styx is still with us and is willing to play....but I gotta be honest, they have been stuck in a nearly 18 year long rut playing the same songs over and over again and never doing anything different. The 2011 Grand Illusion/Pieces of Eight tour gave them the oppurtunity to play some deeper cuts, which they still are to this day, however its the same deep cuts every single night. I mean, yesterday they announced a SUPER MAJOR AWESOME ANNOUNCEMENT FOR 2017 and got everybody's hopes up that they were going to do something different. Maybe a new album? Maybe a concert where they do Paradise Theater or Crystal Ball or whatever in it's entirety?

the announcement was just them announcing that they're going to do a summer tour with REO for the ten billionth time.

I know everybody likes to give DDY shit, but at least with him, the band at least had SOME musical output and they did some things that were different....But as much as Tommy and JY have done a great job keeping Styx alive, they really don't want to do anything different. They just want the same old same old.

So Segue, remember back when we were talking about Styx and you had the idea of doing a thread like this? Well, I'm listening to Styx again and I figured "what the hell?"

Lets talk about Edge of The Century as our first topic!

Styx fans always seem to overlook this album and forget that it was actually a very successful record. Despite the fact that it wasn't the full classic lineup of Styx, the band really marketed the hell out of this album. Show Me The Way was a massive hit on its own and due to the fact that the song was used as a tribute for the U.S soldiers fighting in the Gulf War. Love Is The Ritual and the title track I think got a lot of airplay as well.

So, what is everybody's thoughts on this?

As a fan I have to admit this is one album I do not have. So I am not really able to chime in on this one. But I will read and learn...

Anyway, with Kilroy....As much as I want to not like the album, admittedly there are songs I like on that album....Mr. Roboto is a classic hit (as much as Styx might hate it), Heavy Metal Poisioning and Cold War are great songs and Double Life is pretty good too. The rest is kind of filler, but it's not bad.

Never liked HMP or CW. Mr. Roboto is good. Kilroy is definitely the weakest of their albums.

I'm wondering what you guy's thoughts on The Mission is? Personally, I like it a lot. It has a lot of that Styx magic and I find it to be a very solid prog album. Gone Gone Gone kicks ass as an opening track and Radio Silence almost reminds me of Lamplight Symphony by Kansas.

Unfortunately, it does seem apparent that the missing element is Dennis DeYoung's distinctive voice. Say what you want about him, how he was arrogant and ruined the band, but he had a voice that made Styx unique.

i have to try the record too. i know i said i wouldn't but i alwayys say stupid shit like that and i always cave, lol

Mick

I do know that like Kansas...even if it does nothing for me...id rather they make new music than just your themselves into oblivion.

All we ask as fans is for more. We don't have to like what we get but it's good to see them still trying.

i feel the band were really into making this. it shows.

I'm glad Lawrence Gowan's vocals weren't as awful as they are live.

like Deyoung. he is terribly grating to me. I don't know what it is with Styx and keyboard players, lol

This new record is one of best new albums I have ever heard.

Not only am I seeing them on Friday but I just booked a trip to see them in Jackson Ca. A small venue at an Indian Casino. 6th row center and I get a bag of swag!

STYX is one of the greatest bands on the planet.

Todd is one of the best drummers in the biz.

I played it last night and wasn't a fan of Gowan at all but I did think it was a good record. I'd give it a five or six, and I can hear what makes some really dig it. I also played the latest Kansas for about two tracks but I still don't like that record although I did think it was better than I remembered it to be. Might play it in full later.

So...It's been a while since I posted on this thread (or on this site as a whole to be honest). Seeing as how I'm getting back into Styx again, I might as well talk about it lol.

Anyway, I think that every fan of post-1975 Styx should go back and listen to the Wooden Nickel era records, and not just Lady. There are so many great songs such as Best Thing, You Need Love, Winner Take All, Grove of Eglantine, Father OSA. I seriously wish that they would give this era more love during their current live show. It would be so cool if they did Winner Take All or Grove of Eglantine on their next tour and REALLY throw their fans a curveball.
