Ok, i'm a guitar player, so humor me on this one...

I've seen RUSH numerous times and I watch the videos and DVD's pretty frequently.

You see Alex and Geddy come out onto or leave the stage in the dark here and there, but most of the time, when the lights come on they are just there.

Neil is SURROUNDED by drums, and that is evident in every shot of him, but especially the ones from above the kit.

I have NEVER seen him getting into or out if his kit. Ever.

I'm sure he's just moving a floor tom out of the way or something, but is he? Really?

Has anyone EVER caught a glimpse of him sneaking into his kit?

I think it's wild to think he may be "sneaking" into the kit.....

in front of 20,000 people.

How does he do it?

Am I crazy for realizing I've never caught him doing it?

There's a space in the back just big enough for him to get in and out when he needs to.

and usually when Alex and Geddy go to the side stage, its usually to change guitars (for Alex) and also for them to get a drink.

I did all that typing and all you can give me is one stinkin' line for an explanation?

I'm kidding. tongue.gif

I know there is a space SOMEWHERE where he crawls in.

But the part that I find amazing is that they seem to go to great lengths to conceal his entry and exit from the kit.

Just another small detail that shows you how precise everything is in a RUSH show.

I am curious wich part you call the "back" though, Kazz.....

In the video's that I have, the kit spins around and there is a whole 'nother set behind him at all times....

Like I said, I really know nothing about this, just curious.

Usually they get on stage in the dark, and he can approach the set from behind. At Sarstock a couple of summers ago in Toronto, they played a huge stage in daylight, and he along with the other two, ran from side stage across to his set. You are right - now that you point it out, it occurs to me that that particular stage entry sticks in my mind because it was so unique from all of the other times I have seen Rush.

Before the part where drums and bass enter in Natural Science on Rush In Rio, you can see him run into the kit. It looks like he does is pretty effortlessly.

Hyperspace what a memory you have. I looked at the part on Disc 1 Rush In Rio at 66min. 4 seconds you can see him as you described it " Effortlessly ".

Due to limited space ( Due ti the wall being in the way ) where I have my kit I just tip up one floor tom a little and get in. I wish I had the problem of some real nice electric drums being in my way.

I went to only 2 Rush Shows in 2004. Both started in the Bright Sun Daylight HOT HOT HOT!!!!!! and I just did not seem to even notice the way he gets in. I was very close 7th. row for one show and 10th. for the other.

Now how many drummer buddies did I make with one little percussion observation?

goodpost.gif everyone.

(I will check that out, hyperspace....thanks.)

Wow, hyperspace, you are correct.

Although i don't think he even runs in....he just kinda SLIPS in. it does look like there is a small opening behind the chimes, over his left shoulder in the next few shots from above....

Cool.

About 2 seconds and he's seated. I woulda thought it would be more difficult than that.

Well, that looks like the end of this thread......unless you guys wanna use it to beat on and see if it makes a cool sound... biggrin.gif

I have a question for resident drummers (where has Earl been anyway??).

It was inspired by this video:

How do you do two different things at once with your arms? How does one arm keep one beat and the other another beat or be hitting something else?

It's the rub-your-head and pat-your-belly thing, only with a bunch of bellies and heads.

But that's mindless. This looks like it's involving two different beats at the same time. That must take a lot of concentration.

If you look on the various dvds you can see the slight space between the front and back kits as mentioned. But with that expanding wasteline it would have to been getting a little tight.Failing that he would have just become invisible like he does at the end of shows and he wouldn't have to worry about the gap between kits.

The best example is probably Peart's 'drum also waltzes' bit. I can play a lot of Rush tunes and what I can't play still seems learnable with practice.. but that waltz thing he does just seems impossible..

Often he would slip in from the back a couple of minutes before the house lights had gone down and would orient himself at the kids while it was covered.

Here's where Neil got that bit...Max Roach.

Hey, Lorraine, get a load of this guy...

I could just see me trying to do that. It would make a good comedy video watching me try, that's for sure.

If someone doesn't have the talent, all the practice in the world will not give it to them. Looks to me like you have to be pretty coordinated to be a drummer.

Practice is the best explanation. Starting slow and repetition, repetition, repetition.
