What drug was he on? I know nothing about the band other than their music Just quickly looked Kansas up and it says that Walsh retired from the band two years ago.

Cocaine. Pretty bad from what I heard. He left the band originally back in 1981 then rejoined and then quit again.

It's amazing he's still alive.

I saw them on their casino tour a couple years ago when Walsh was still with them. His voice was passable but you could tell the years took their toll. Along with Walsh the only original members where Phil Ehart and Rich Williams. They're on a current tour and are playing Leftoverture in it's entirety. I'll probably pass on going since it's mostly a tribute band at this point. Edited by HemiBeers

Isn't that pathetic? The Moodies are basically a tribute band at this point too.

I don't know, Eagle. This is from 2010, and he still hit those notes pretty good: https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=NK1KDJSVj7Q

You can really tell how bad his voice sounds now on some other songs they did. He doesn't even sound like himself anymore.

It's disappointing, but I wouldn't go as far to say it's pathetic. Their replacement guys at the concert a few years ago were excellent musicians and did justice to their songs. But it's still disappointing that there are so few still involved in the band. Kerry Livgren had a stroke a few years ago. In recent interviews he looks ok, but probably not up to playing on a tour. I still might go the Kalamazoo concert if I can catch some last minute cheap seats. But I'm not real motivated after just seeing them a few years ago. Even then it was just a 'greatest hits' concert.

I like Kansas, but I think their music has aged poorly to say the least. I saw them many years ago play at Hershey Park (around the year 2000 I'm thinking) and they were close to being a tribute band even back then. They played two one hour sets (with an hour break in between) and played the same songs in both. Very disappointing. The plus side was that they jokingly complained about not getting the top billing because of a puppet show.

It might not be pathetic for them, but it is pathetic for the Moodies - the Moodies who once sold out not only one but two shows a day at MSG and couldn't even fill a movie theater once today.

Why these two songs? They don't have much in common apart from being singles.

Because I thought they might be similarly liked, and so far I'm right.

they're both fabulous songs, but like you said, David's guitar solo and just the general imagery of comfortably numb give it the edge. I just don't consider these prog songs.or bands. But I'm on record as stating that that term is really a pantload and a catch all for anything not metal, thrash, punk or rockabilly.

And don't even get me started on the term classic rock

I think they prefer the more intimate venues. It affords them being able to use a smaller troupe, have shorter sets and be more flexible on where they play. Y'all have to remember, these dudes are 70 years old and cannot perform like they once did. Edge just gives a valiant attempt at the drums, but they've had a second percussionist for years. I give them a lot more credit than the Stones and that fraud Daltry and Pete like to call the Who. Those bands sound effin terrible and honestly do embarrass themselves. But the nostalgia is there and people consume it eagerly. I saw both those bands in the early 80s and they were amazing. Now watching them on video I can't help but drift off. But I've seen the Moodys three times, going on four soon and they sound magnificent. Like close your eyes and the LP is playing tight and smooth.

I was a Moodies fan from the beginning in the sixties, and I saw them back in the day when they were great (1971 - I was 17). Since that first concert, I saw them five or six more times. By the last time (1987 or '88)I was bored with them.

They don't prefer smaller venues now. That's just all they can muster. Tthey haven't changed their set list in twenty years. And they just lost their fill-in drummer Gordie. Even he got bored with them. They need money to keep their lifestyles going, and they are bleeding the small cluster of their ever-aging loyal fans for every cent they can get from them.

In short, they are a pale facsimile of what they once were a very , very, very long time ago.

P.S. I always have them in the back of my mind when Rush fans keep clamoring for Rush to keep touring. No Rush fan wants to see Rush turn out like the Moodies. Or Kansas.

I was just thinking this exact thing when I read your other post. They wanted to go out while they still had gas in the tank, and they have.

Comfortably Numb without a doubt. Wayward Son is a good song with some great vocal harmonies but Comfortably Numb is hauntingly beautiful and moving imo.

I like both, they are great in their own right. Comfortably numb, is good but dark, wayward is uplifting.Depends what mood I suppose. Is this psychoanalysis? :P

No, just analysis...and a good job of it. Two great but very different songs. I honestly can't say which I prefer more, for all the reasons mentioned in the thread in support of them

COMWS is the more proggishly interesting, but CN is simply perfect. Not one, but two amazing Gilmour solos!

Confortably Numb

I HATE Kansas.

Have you ever been called for jury duty?

Oh right, you're 15. I suspect that in the future you won't have to worry about missing any work if you are called for jury duty. . .
