  1. H O L O G R A M P E A R T ! ! ! ! ! :Neil: :dweez: :D-13: :haz: :7up: :smoke: :d13: :yay:  :P :D :rfl: :ebert:  :laughing yellow guy: :LMAO:
  2. Only in Toronto could you sell highend clothing with a drum kit. http://links.holtsstyle.com/a/v.x?t=plgpbacmmhmpakeapapbfmplpilhomndchniblglibddhkjbggaanepddkakdgfbhfbfmdllhehcebnmbgpc&v=4
  3. So, Japan. Rush went there once during the 1984 Grace Under Pressure tour. I don't know much about the GUP tour in general, but there seems to be a bit of mystery surrounding the Japan leg of it. What I'm talking about has to do with the equipment used. If this is something I could learn reading the books, I apologize, but I seem to come up with a new question about Neil's kits that needs to be answered every day! This could be something everyone else knows, but here goes... This link http://broonsbane.tr...om/rushneil.htm takes us to a webpage detailing the history of Neil Peart's Tama Artstar prototype drums that were used between 1982 to 1985, within the 1984 GUP Japan tour fell. However, the page mentions that "When Rush played their first and only Japanese concerts in late 1984, Hoshino-Gakki spared Neil the travel expense, by building a replica set sans brass-plating and vibra-fibing. Neil needed to only bring his hardware, heads and cymbals." http://broonsbane.tripod.com/neilsdrumsbacks.jpg I'm inclined to believe the kit is/was real, since Hoshino-Gakki is the owner of the Tama-brand drum name, but I haven't heard or read anything about them outside that page. So my questions are: Can anyone confirm this? What became of the kit following those four shows?
  4. More importantly, a Hemispheres/YYZ related question. A silly technical question, but it's bugging me a little. First, Hemispheres. So, at the minute-59 mark of the song, we hear a distinct twinkling sound with a galloping kind of rhythm, like a triangle or something. And Neil Peart did have triangles on his set around that time... http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7134/7526506168_efc527af22_z.jpg But there are other percussion items on his set that could make a similar sound. He had crotales mounted atop his tubular bells... http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2097/2126130903_e0cd40a8fd_z.jpg?zz=1 ...there was a set of orchestra bells in the ballpark of his timbales and concert toms... http://stupuola.files.wordpress.com/2010/12/neil-peart.jpg ...and possibly the bell of his ride cymbal (although I am skeptical of this). I am leaning more towards the crotales, but they seem inconvenient due to their placement, since at the 2:06 mark he moves over to the hi hats with the same rhythm, and that would be a considerable distance to travel in such short time! The orchestra bells would seem more likely, but then again... Another question: What note/pitch/tone/whatever is it exactly? I would like to make the addition of the mystery percussion to my current kit, but I want to know exactly what it is I need to buy so I don't end up with a kit bigger than Neil's! I know crotales each have a different tune/note, so I want that one, not thirteen! Is there any way we can figure it out if we haven't already? The same goes for the sound at the very beginning of YYZ. I just can't think of what it is. I am leaning more towards triangle on this one, but the question still stands...
  5. As most fans know, Neil Peart's talents go beyond drumming and writing lyrics. He's an accomplished author who has published numerous books over the years. What some fans may not know, however, is that Neil privately published a number of books earlier in his career. One such book, The African Drum, details his adventures travelling through Africa in the mid-80's. For the first time anywhere, part one of 'The African Drum' is now available exclusively from Cygnus-X1.Net Click http://www.cygnus-x1.net/links/rush/peart-the-african-drum.php to read it....and enjoy! -John

  7. So I finally got bored enough to try and catch up with Neil's blog again, and I think I figured out what really upset SL in that second-to-last post. Using a trained eye, I was able to see that some of the photographs might have been digitally altered. Here's one example: http://i1295.photobucket.com/albums/b629/Knightsaber1/photodneil_zpse5c1a21f.jpg In this picture of Neil standing over Inspiration Point off of Mirage Island, you can clearly see the dead giveaways that I outlined which suggest that Neil may not have been in the original picture. And unlike the photo of the Aston Martin by the beach, whoever edited this picture didn't even bother to include the Drop Shadow effect. So, as a public service to TRF, I've decided to amend this slightly by scrounging the Internet for an unaltered photo from the same film card used for this expedition. This pic, as you will all see, is definitely NOT Photoshopped: http://i1295.photobucket.com/albums/b629/Knightsaber1/kimpagneil_zps542c828d.jpg Hope that clears things up for you guys. Have a great Holiday season!
  8. CBC chose the top 10 Rush songs and Neil Peart gave a breakdown of each one. Do you agree with the top 10? http://music.cbc.ca/blogs/2014/11/Neil-Peart-on-the-10-best-Rush-songs-ever

  10. Spaghetti Lee Has Been Sneaking Progesterone Into My Macallan by Neil Ellwood Peart It has come to my attention, as I gaze into the mirror and wonder if my motorcycle armor makes me look fat, that a certain member of The Rush Forum's group of obstreperous ne'er-do-wells has used those pictures of my house on the Internet (Thanks, assholes.) to form a break-in plan to the room in which I keep my trusty liquor cabinet. This would concern me more if the member turned out to be one of many of those in the Sense O'Clock News forum, none of whom I would care to have on my property without at least an adequate sharks with frickin' laser beams tank for them to "accidentally" find once they start asking me why I'm not a fan of Rand Paul or his father. Or his namesake, at least not anymore. Damn it, I don't know. What do you people want from me, anyway? Screw you, this is MY guest column! Damn it, Spaghetti Lee is such a jerk! Am I having hot flashes now? I swear it's a thousand degrees out here. Maybe it's because I've been out in the middle of the desert again on my motorcycle. Why do I do that? God, I'm so stupid! Stupid female hormones... wait, am I growing breasts? Gah, are you kidding?? I am NOT taking a blog selfie with boobs! Michael?? Michael, do you have any liquor that isn't mine? Oh wait, just that stuff you drink? Eww, gross! Gawwd, how am I EVER going to face my wife again like this?? I mean, my boobs are bigger than hers! Well, okay, maybe they were before, but gawd. Oh no, is that one of my fans? Is he, like, seeing me like this?? Is he walking over to... oh crap, he has a cell phone camera! RUN!!! Phew! Man, I'm going to have to have these surgically removed. How do women live with these anyway? Spaghetti Lee, you are, like, SUCH a dead man! UPDATE: The Guys at Work visited and said that they don't notice much of a difference. Then they laughed at me. This sucks so bad, I'm gonna go in my room now and write a bunch of songs about it. Then they'll have to play them all. Serves them right.
  11. To my current crush- Happy Birthday! http://cdn.riffraf.net/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/Neil+Peart.jpg Cheers, frippy
  12. Honestly, I think it's more constructive to do the latter. Any MSTies in TRF should enjoy what I did to that Morrissey Tupperware segment: http://i1295.photobucket.com/albums/b629/Knightsaber1/tupperwareneil_zps3edbb4be.jpg
  13. I'm assuming that there can't be too many TRFers who are into Electric Six, but I just read this post on the bands facebook from a couple of days ago and thought that y'all would find it pretty neat. https://www.facebook...-6/154062438761 Hamilton, Ontario has birthed some giants in the arts and entertainment sphere. Comedy legends Martin Short, Eugene Levy and Dave Thomas of Second City and SCTV are Hamiltonians. Famed Hollywood director Ivan Reitman also hails from Hamilton, as does contemporary dance/pop act Junior Boys. The focus of Electric Six's discussion today is not on any of these figures, giant as they are. Instead, we choose to discuss Neil Peart, drummer for Canada's most successful rock band ever, Rush. Peart didn't have an easy climb to the top of Rock Drummer Mountain, Crazies. Before joining Rush, he lived in London where work was so scarce for him that he was reduced to selling souvenirs to tourists just to survive. Despite his awesome skin work, Neil wasn't finding things easy, but he didn't pity himself. While in London, he discovered the works of Objectivist writer and libertarian pin up girl Ayn Rand. Rand's boostrap ethos inspired Peart to not give up and to not look to the government for any drumming related handouts. He returned to Canada to work for his father and played in an Ontario band called Hush (rhymes with "Rush," doesn't it, Crazies?). After he toiled that way for awhile, he got tipped to an opportunity to audition for Rush (not Hush) and after making a strange impression, got the gig. The rest was history, as his manic drumming style and lyrical content proved inspirational to millions of nerds worldwide. Neil Peart is a classic example of what happens when you refuse to quit and apply hard money principles to one's life. On Wednesday, July 16, Electric Six will purposefully stride upon a stage at The Casbah in Hamilton, Ontario and will do so with zero assistance from the government. Like Neil Peart, Electric Six is a firm believer in the gold standard and the primacy of the individual above all else. Electric Six worries about rampant inflation and the eroding value of its money. Yet, it doesn't worry nearly as much about having to roll in a wheelbarrow full of dollars to buy a loaf of bread as it does giving the Crazies a good time each and every night. For approximately 70 minutes, inclusive of encore, Electric Six is gonna bust a musical cap in the ass of Hamiltonian Crazies. Percussion World is not Neil Peart and he doesn't have anywhere close to the same sized kit that man uses, but he's gonna lay down a non-stop beat a Crazy won't be able to resist. Percussion World is going to apply Austrian Economics principles to the drums on Wednesday night and you'll see where that gets you, Crazy. It gets you where you want to go. 2 days ago
  14. November 21st, 2013: A Segway Into Nothingness by Neil Peart, courtesy of neilpeart.net. Not made up in any way. http://i1295.photobucket.com/albums/b629/Knightsaber1/neilonsegway_zps4fe0d1d8.jpg Please stop laughing. I'm trying to tell a story here. I usually don’t choose big cities for my riding adventures, but some new friends of mine insisted that I try something novel. Not “novel” as in “writing a book” mind you, as these same friends tend to be quite indirect when I ask them for an honest opinion of my prose. There’s something about California that makes it harder for the residents to be as blatantly honest as those in the rest of the United States. I once made the mistake of asking a heavily tattooed bookstore clerk in Brooklyn what he thought of my travel memoir about riding my motorcycle through the Nepalese valleys near Mount Everest, and his answer was a mumbled rant about the publishing industry, celebrity worship, and his urge to kill the next Rush fan who walks in asking for a copy of my latest work. Maybe a bit too honest, but I wasn’t exactly going to confront him about it. Anyway, back to San Francisco. Or Frisco. Or whatever they call it over there, bless their little stoner hearts. It’s a city of people who try way too hard to remind you of how enlightened and intelligent they are, which is an impulse that I certainly can’t comprehend. I will say that their bookstores are nice, though the sections in the back tend to be the most popular for some reason. There was one bar where I saw a promising number of motorcycles parked outside, but when I walked in I found the other men in leather to be a bit too welcoming for my taste. Had Brutus not been there with me to say, “Back off, he’s mine!” in a fake lisp, I probably would not be writing about this adventure for everyone here on the Internet to read. http://i1295.photobucket.com/albums/b629/Knightsaber1/IMG_3258_zps3eae3714.jpg Thanks but no thanks, guys. Really. My tour of Golden State Park was a kinder, gentler experience. And that’s putting it very mildly. Between the Conservatory of Flowers, the Chain of Lakes, the Arch of Colonial Trees and an Academy of Sciences that seems to specialize in such wonders, I figured that maybe riding my motorcycle through the pathways of this vast tribute to nature itself would be rather inappropriate. Unfortunately, the park had its own choice of vehicle for those wishing to ride through their lands: The Segway. Yes, the Mighty Segway; the vehicle known for both its eco-friendliness and its use by mall cops who try desperately to ignore the stares and uproarious laughter from those who haven’t seen one before. Of course, in a city this enlightened, looking silly is just a minor detail when compared to showing off one’s social consciousness. Again, something I would know nothing about. But, since this reporter likes to be a good sport, I decided to swallow my pride (a painful task that risks fatal choking) and slump over to the Segway rental station for a chance to participate this unforgettably action-packed thrill ride. http://i1295.photobucket.com/albums/b629/Knightsaber1/segway-tour-golden-gate_zps63837166.jpg See how thrilled that guy is? Pretty much. After being warned that my Segway might not perform properly due to my exceeding the recommended 250-pound limit, I decided to rent one anyway. I once mentioned that I had a firm belief in karma at one point in my life. Had I still believed in the phenomenon then perhaps I would have attributed this tedious tour with every reporter who had to listen to my stories of how hard it was growing up in conformist suburbia and how I turned to books for comfort and because of that I was never any good at sports and sometimes the jocks would run my underwear up the flagpole with me still in it. I never gave much thought to how bored the reporters were at listening to me speak in these run-on sentences. But now that I think about how I felt rolling on a tiny scooter in a single-file line while a tour guide rattled on about how the Japanese Tea Garden was the oldest in the United States, perhaps I should have answered with a simple “yes” or “no” during those interviews. When the Segway tour was finally over, I decided to visit the new CommUNITY Garden to see what they were up to regarding sustainable food production in urban areas. I was impressed at how diligently the people there were tending the plots, perhaps taking heed of Voltaire’s wise words regarding cultivating your own garden. A garden to nurture and protect, in the measure of a life. A life that, thankfully, was not cut short despite the garden’s lack of pesticide use allowing for a poisonous insect to bite me on the nose and turn it an even darker shade than it was at the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame Ceremony. Maybe I should have just stayed at that bar. http://i1295.photobucket.com/albums/b629/Knightsaber1/1139277663_zpsbfa6e399.jpg

  17. Perhaps old news, but thought I'd let you know. Mostly motorcycle riding but there's some cool Rush related pictures in there as well :) https://twitter.com/Praetorianx1
  18. Were only Jazz basses used on the new album? On the title track of the album, it sounds like Geddy brought back the Rickenbacker. Any info?

    Lakeside Park

EDIT: So my mom surprised me and my dad with tickets to go to Canada, and see Rush play in Toronto! We went exploring all around to some of the cool places Rush sings about! Lakeside Park was definitely one of my favorites! So here's some pictures to go along with the great song! We also met fellow Rush fans there! It was really neat! LAKESIDE PARK http://i.imgur.com/T0SCd.jpg Midway hawkers calling "Try your luck with me." Merry-go-round wheezing same old melody. A thousand ten-cent wonders, who could ask for more. A pocketful of silver, the key to heaven's door. http://i.imgur.com/wMUFZ.jpg Lakeside Park, willows in the breeze. Lakeside Park, so many memories. Laughing rides, midway lights, Shining stars on summer nights. http://i.imgur.com/XR2aa.jpg Days of barefoot freedom, racing with the waves http://i.imgur.com/I4crJ.jpg Nights of starlit secrets, crackling driftwood flames http://i.imgur.com/cjB56.jpg Drinking by the lighthouse, smoking on the pier http://i.imgur.com/QrEMl.jpg Still, we saw the magic was fading every year http://i.imgur.com/XuUhs.jpg Everyone would gather on the twenty fourth of May, Sitting in the sand to watch the fireworks display. Dancing fires on the beach, singing songs together, Though it's just a memory, some memories last forever.
  21. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gYOkEcWzceY I was there!!! Its a week long intense orchestra camp that plays lots of rock & roll! This was the final concert, and that's my mom with the blue viper violin with the yellow dress! I'm so jealous she got to play Rush with her group and I didn't! :( BUT it was amazing to watch!! Everyone go take a look!

  23. Hi, Kevin J. Anderson is auctioning off two rare Author VIP editions of the novel Clockwork Angels. These were never for sale to the public and are only available from Kevin and Neil. These have slipcovers, are still sealed in shrink wrap, are signed by both Kevin and Neil Peart, and are coming from Kevin directly. He wants to raise money for one of his fans that has Brittle Bone Disease and recently had medical issues, and then his wheelchair equipped van died. Kevin wants to raise money to help get Sean a down payment for a van, since right now, he can't drive to doctor's appointments, school, etc. They are copies #107 and #110 out of 150 created. This is a true collector's MUST have, due to the rarity of the pieces. 100% of the funds raised got to Sean for his down payment for his van. Please help us make one little victory for this guy, and get a super rare piece of Rush history too! Bid on either copies of the book at http://www.onelittlelight.net/auctions/ or people can just donate at PayPal by using this email 1littlelight2112@gmail.com
  24. This is going to sound really strange, but just hear me out, ok? I had a friend in school who told me that he heard somewhere that Alex Lifeson did the drumming on Rush demo tapes. This is not something I'd ever heard before, and I'm somewhat skeptical since anything I've searched has turned up blank, with the exception of a page on tvtropes about Rush (http://tvtropes.org/...?from=Main.Rush . Somewhere around "Hidden Depths"). I'm inclined to believe that this is where he read it to begin with, but it just doesn't sound right. It just seems too hair-brained to be true, but maybe I don't know about Rush as I thought I did! Can anyone confirm this?
