There are some big Gentle Giant fans here, and quite a few fans of Jethro Tull, and I have researched both bands a little, but am stuck on where to start. Could some of you more experienced fans please take a moment to give me a briefing on each groups discography?? I want advice as, more than any other prog bands, these two groups intimidates me. Do not suggest I am looking for the easiest listen (I began my Yes journey with Tales, and it could not have turned it any better for me), but after all the help I had from you guys with Yes and recently Genesis, I am hoping for a bit of a push with these two bands.

So: Vapor Trails Feedback (not for me but who knows?) Snakes And Arrows Clockwork Angels Vapor Trails Remixed I include the remix separately as I think for many of us they are two totally different albums. For example: I love Freeze on the original. Not the remix. Others prefer the remix.

I have a huge music collection and would like to make it more compact so with some bands I am collecting box sets where available to try and save space. Now this is blasphemy, I know, but I do not own a single live Rush album either. So...these sets have all the original albums AND the live albums up to whatever date they stop (how deep was that hehe), and the box sets themselves look gorgeous to my eyes. Not too expensive considering what's is contained within (and I bought the original albums for less than £5 up to Hold Your Fire anyway...). So, worth getting?

Pros of tags: they give a respectful nod towards a member or X (other) Cons of tags: they're ultimately useless and very annoying I bring this up because the new Albums You've Listened To version has the "babycat" tag (why I don't know, she doesn't even post in that thread) and now we are plagued with that disgusting and intrusive block of threads at the bottom of the thread. When I post in a thread I like to hit the [end] key and then start writing my post.. But now it's not so easy if I'm using a smaller window. I have to [end] and then [pg up] and then scroll to re-position myself in order to post. Even if this wasn't a problem in making me take an extra second before writing my post, it's a problem in that the related threads block is a massive eyesore. I understand the purpose of tags, but I doubt anyone actually values their serious use... At best, tags are a silly little feature used for fun, but at worst they soil board experience. You like Babycat? Cool, so do I, I love Babycat, but what's the point of the tag? If there's a way to disable the "Also tagged with one or more of these keywords:" block from appearing in every thread with a common tag, I suggest it should be done. This would solve the problem.

Flip me, there I was a couple of months back proclaiming Kansas to be a sucky band, and now I think they have stolen a place in my top five bands of all time! I will share videos later, but I think, with bands like Yes, Porcupine Tree and Dream Theater getting a lot of love on this forum, Kansas now deserve their moment! And now I am gearing myself up for Gentle Giant. I am sure for the first six months I will adamantly detest them as well... But as for Kansas, those seventies albums shine brilliantly, and their best work possibly surpasses even Rush for me.

So a hot topic debated recently on this forum is whether or not rock is still alive. Yesterday, ReGor started a great new thread where we discuss what the ultimate list of defining classic rock albums would contain, and it is very interesting to say the least. But how about we give some attention to new music. This is not to swipe away the focus on classic artists and their work (that thread I hope will have long legs), but just to shed light on new generations, new sounds, a new era. The criteria for this list is simple: Classic rock bands of course deserve the honour of inclusion (Rush, Europe, and Maiden have had some great successes, for example), but the albums HAVE to be from 2000 onwards (90's releases deserve their own thread, but this thread is meant to shine a light on the 21st Century). As always, be respectful. Music is not always a topic that needs to be argued, and I would like to ask that if we get any foolish messages about "rock is dead" or "these artists/albums suck in comparison to old music", we linger on the pro-active comments instead. Because truth be told, it is getting boring and the negativity from certain quarters is exhausting (and I will take some of the flack for being too confrontational myself at times)). This should be a thread to celebrate or introduce new music. We can agree, or agree to disagree. But let's just keep things interesting. If you disagree with a release, but agree on the band, spotlight the album you think is more deserving rather than tear apart someone else's addition to the list. Feel free to discuss, just be nice about it.

Hi! As many are aware, I have issues and many of them cause me to sleep roughly...well...never. Anyone know of any good methods, preferably herbal, that can help my mind and body relax?

Ok, I grew up with this US (or is it Canadian) cartoon called The Raccoons. I have sort of forgotten the show, but this song was awesome! I love it! My favourite TV theme ever? YES! Lisa Lougheed- Run With Us (The Raccoons Theme) Easily one of my all time favourite feel good songs! Takes me straight back to childhood...no wonder I grew up obsessed with eighties AOR and pop!

Ok, so this is my review thread for my favourite albums of all time. I have limited this list to just one album per artist, as my taste is varied and I desire to have this list reflect that. Also, it just so happens that my ten favourite albums are by ten different artists, so that goal worked out for me anyway regardless! So, ten albums have to be mentioned first that missed out: 20. From December's issue of Metal Hammer UK: MAIDEN FINLAND The legendary Steve Harris reveals his deep and ongoing passion for the symphonic metallers. “When I heard [2007’s] Dark Passion Play, I couldn’t believe it. I thought, ‘Now, this is a proper effing album.' It's got everything bar the kitchen sink in there. It was controversial because of the new singer [Anette Olzon], but she was brilliant. No disrespect to Tarja, but Anette’s voice suited them a lot better. There’s heavy stuff, classical, even a bit of Disney – all kinds of shit in there. I think it’s one of the best-sounding albums I’ve ever heard in my life. “Then I got the next one, [2011’s] Imaginaerum. Storytime is a fantastic, instant song. The rest of the album took me a while to get into. Dark Passion Play was so good, I thought there was no way they could ever come up with an album that’s anywhere near that, but the more I got into Imaginaerum, the more I loved it. “I haven’t heard the new one with Floor Jansen yet, but those two albums for me – I don’t think there’s anything else that I’ve heard out there that’s even close.”

For me, Geddy rarely sounds like a woman. Occasionally high pitched, but rarely feminine. But recently I played a friend HYF, and he mistook Open Secrets for Stevie Nicks! And he thought, whilst I played MP, that Rush was another of my "chick metal" bands haha! Anyway, one song for me sounds very feminine: The Big Wheel. From the moment I first heard it, I thought it was Cher. And also How It Is.

So, we all have different tastes. But we hear so much about music dying, so let's just list the bands/artists that keep music ALIVE for us! They have to still be active. They can be any age, but must have had a studio album released within the last ten years, plus touring. We have had so much sadness this past month with two major deaths, so let's keep this positive and praise what WE think is keeping our ears fresh to new sounds. No arguing about tastes please, just celebrate what you love, whether it be Taylor Swift or Cult Of Luna. Sharing is caring! Let's be POSITIVE for the future of our music!

This is not the same as the AOTY thread. What musical discoveries, events, gigs, news made your year in 2015? For me it was these: Nightwish- both Endless Forms Most Beautiful and the concert at Wembley blew my mind. They have had a phenomenal year, perhaps the most universally accepted year in the history of the fanbase since prior to the exit of Tarja. Discovering King's X. ReGor was doing another if his marathons, and this band really caught my eye and ear! Thanks ReGor! Because of you I wasted a lot of money on this AMAZING band! Explored Styx, Strangeways, Trillion and Foreigner, became a massive AOR freak! Mick prodded me towards this style, and I ended up discovering a whole ear of amazing bands! Add also Starcastle, LeRoux, Jethro Tull and King Crimson to this list (of course some of these are not AOR but they belong to that era). Rediscovered Paradise Lost, Within Temptation and to a large extent early Nightwish, and once again became enamoured with a style of music that had sort of been dead to me for a good ten years. Toto released a great new album! Completely overshadowed by Nightwish, I still love it! What highlights did all you guys have? What music made your year this year?

Geddy just confirmed that Peart has retired from touring, not recording, and that what he said was taken out of context. He also says it is not at all surprising. Fraroc and the Butthurt's (ooh...new band name!) can all move along now. Exclusive: Rush mainman says drummer was merely confirming his position on touring Rush mainman Geddy Lee has moved to squash rumours that drummer Neil Peart had announced his retirement. Peart gave an interview to Drumhead magazine in which he's quoted as saying he's happy to accept the description of himself as a "retired drummer," but Lee says his bandmate was merely confirming that he could no longer commit to lengthy tours. Lee tells Prog: “There’s really nothing to say. I think Neil is just explaining his reasons for not wanting to tour, with the toll that it’s taking on his body. That’s all I would care to comment on it. "We’ll get together eventually and chat about things. But in my view, there is certainly nothing surprising in what he said. Neil just feels that he has to explain with all the thousands of people asking, ‘Why no more tours?’ He needs to explain his side of it.” Asked whether he feels Peart's quote was taken out of context, Lee adds: “I think that’s absolutely right. That’s their job. Talking about something when there’s nothing to talk about.” Fans are clamouring for confirmation on whether Rush will continue to record and perform live. Peart previously said he wanted to spend more time with his family, while guitarist Alex Lifeson said he was largely over hishealth issues and wants to continue playing with the band.
