Musical Instruments You Play

  1. I know, I know, the prevailing opinion is Coldplay sucks and especially anything they did after their first two albums. And I know Kansas is well loved on here, especially those first five albums...but I'm taking Coldplay for this one. Icarus will take the song face off though.
  2. For those wondering why so many Hall And Oates albums keep showing up: they all come from the records my mom used to own. For those wondering why so many Elton John albums keep showing up: I love Elton. :P
  3. Both of these records are long winded and feature winding arrangements, but one is a folky kind of mystical prog, and the other is incredibly dry technical thrash. Who do you have? Album covers for reference:
  4. Ah, intersting, two much more modern albums randomly pair off with each other. What do you say? Icelandic art pop at its absolute weirdest. Or American indie folk at its indiest. EDIT: oops forgot the poll hang on a sec EDIT 2: fixed
  5. Easy poll for me. No slight against the Dan, but Genesis outrank most everybody for me, and Wind & Wuthering is one of the first albums that got me into them (honestly, it might be the most important album in my transition from non fan to hardcore fan).
  6. Two pretty good albums from two great artists! Who've you got?
  7. Each band's most commercially successful release from what I understand, but who is victorious?
  8. Normally I'm a prog guy, but I listened to On The Threshold Of A Dream not that long ago and it just didn't do much for me. I haven't listened to the full Freeze-Frame album in ages, but it has the title track and Centerfold at least, which are just good radio singles (even if I'm pretty sick of the latter).
  9. Haven't had one in a while, so apparently we're starting with a sure blowout! I suppose it's only right for The Stones to have a cupcake opponent since Charlie just passed away. That said, for those of you who don't know Brand X, it's the fusion project that Phil Collins drummed and sang with during the late 70s. So they're not nobody!
  10. As the nominating round of the power ballad list is nearing its close, I'll toss up a new RPG. Here's one Uriah Heep can win, if my assumptions about the tastes of most of this forum are correct anyway. For me though, Three Cheers and MCR all the way. I will say, these are both some of the strongest showings from their respective bands. Demons And Wizards in particular sees Heep in rare form.
  11. I was really hoping this would be a good matchup when the first album got chosen, but alas, I'm sure it will be a mega-blowout.
  12. This is going to be such a blowout that I'm going to commence a second RPG for the day just so there's hopefully a more interesting matchup.
  13. One for those in the know versus another for anyone with two ears and a radio.
  14. Shall this one be more evenly split? Who will win? The old metal heads, the AOR nuts? Certainly the answer is anyone who loves both! The album covers for reference:
  15. Here we go! This is an very interesting matchup! Don't come at me about apples and oranges, I wanna know for real, which do you prefer? You can change your mind tomorrow, but gut feeling. It's gotta be one or the other. Don't get all Tangled Up In Blue just because I Wanna Be Starting Something here! :P
  16. Yeah well this one's sure to be super popular... not! Anyway this is interesting. I've often noted my exceeding love for Italian prog, especially PFM, however I have to admit this live album of theirs doesn't really have the same magic of their first three studio albums. It's like they're playing too fast and too loose, and the songs get lost in the jamming. It almost doesn't sound like the same band. The playing is electric of course, very exciting, but it's really missing that balance between the achingly beautiful and the chaotic and raucous that makes PFM so special. On the flip side, In On The Kill Taker is the only Fugazi album I own, or have ever heard, but it's an absolute slaughter. It's heavy and cerebral and visceral and creative and I really enjoy it, though it's tough to play around others, lol. So I'm splitting my vote. In On The Kill Taker for the album, but PFM for the band.
  17. For all the random matchups this this spits out, it seems to be making some sense today. Two certified rock and roll legends from the original British Invasion, both getting a little proggy but nothing too overblown, and both at the peaks of their powers. Which do you choose?
