Musical Instruments You Play

  1. Anyone explain the three versions of Fly by Night being released end of this month?
  2. So as I am only sixteen, this will be my first and likely only Rush concert. In addition, this will be the first real concert which I go to voluntarily and outside of music camps, school, and honor bands (I play saxophone). I was wondering if any experienced concert-goers, most especially with Rush concerts, could give me any useful information about what I should be prepared for when I go with my dad in June. Feel free to share random concert stories, too (makes the thread more fun). :)
  3. Haven't seen a thread like this but thought I'd get the ball rolling. Listening to The Enemy Within, my wife,in the kitchen yells, "Haven't heard this before. Are you listening to Men at Work?"
  4. Which songs in the Rush discography (excluding live recordings) do you think are the most powerful and atmospheric? Or rather, which ones make you feel most like you're there, experiencing what's being described thanks to lyrics, instrumentation, and/or production? MY LIST: Red Sector A Marathon Jacob's Ladder Red Barchetta Cygnus X-1 & 2 Witch Hunt Subdivisions Rivendell Driven Clockwork Angels (whole album)

    Signals, a question?

So being bored on a Friday night and a lack of Rush news was wondering if the powers that be managed to produce a 5.1 mix of Signals how come they never did a proper stereo remix. If you play the 5.1 mix in stereo from the Sector 3 boxset you get this weird version as though the engineer had one too many reefers.
  6. Not for that reason, but this one: http://finance.yahoo.com/news/no-dog-isnt-equivalent-7-233457570.html

    Rush Platinum awards

Haven't seen a thread on this anywhere but from time to time I check RIAA for any sign of Rush's audit of their gold and platinum awards. Just been on and noticed that in May 2014 Clockwork Angels video was awarded Platinum and Time Machine was awarded 2x platinum.
  8. I do not have one, nor have any plans to attain one any time soon. How about y'all?
  9. Hey guys!!! Just to let you all know, starting at 8pm EST, I will be broadcasting my first ever radio show on WWPI (college radio). I will be playing a couple rush songs within an hour along with other great bands (Pink Floyd, Foo Fighters, The Who, etc.). Would really appreciate it if you would listen in, especially if you're bored and looking for something to do. Here's the link: http://radio.wpi.edu/?page_id=211
  10. Power trio? Check. Kimonos? Check. Long songs? Check. Terrible videos? Check. Straight guy on stage right, crazy guy on stage left? Check. 17 albums made? Check. Man, I can't believe it. http://youtu.be/rtyflMxqAUw
  11. No, really, I feel great about doing this stuff. Anyone wanna toast some marshmallows over the bodies?
  12. Spirit of Radio ranked No. 18 http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b04f7xn6/live
  13. Very quiet on the Rush front. Has anyone ever used Hemispheres as an alarm clock? When hosting parties and wanting to get rid of people in the morning, used to crank the volume up, put Hemispheres on and watch and wait.
  14. For over 40 years (and counting) Rush has given to its fans an immeasureable amount of musical content and collectible history. Fans from around the world can never seem to get enough of these guys, scooping up everything from vinyl to posters to buttons to some of the most bizarre memorabilia imaginable. When it comes to Geddy, Alex, and Neil, my vice starts with the music; and more specifically, vinyl. I love vinyl. The love the tactile sensation of holding on gingerly to the wax-like medium. I love the way it looks. I love the sound. Vinyl and what goes in to manufacturing vinyl, from the outer cover art to the actual grooves is pure magic. And I love Rush. Combine the two, and what you come up with a pretty nice (and still growing) collection. As with any type of entertainment collectible, there are the normal items (LPs and 45s), but every now and again, something pops up in the "least expected" pile. I stumbled upon one such thing the other day and being the completeist, I had to jump all over it. These "discs" are seemingly very rare and obscure. Called "Flexi discs", the history shows that they were a relatively common promotional item that sometimes was attached to magazines to showcase an artist or an audible message. The disc I found was manufactured by a company called Budkon. I'm not sure if this is a Russian or Polish company, but back in the early '90s, they manufactured coloured flexi discs of several artists. Note however, that these disks were "unauthorized" (wink wink). These paper-thin, single track 45s were apparently produced in very limited numbers (possibly in the dozens) and notoriously produced horrible sound. While the songs are recognizable, the background noise truly makes these non-listenable, especially as most people have these tracks on better vinyl or digitally. The covers seem like they are printed or copied on computer paper. Check out the link below for more details (referring to Husker Du flexis, but offers a really good explanation). http://www.thirdav.c...scog/budkon.htm I managed to find not onw, but three from our favorite band: Distant Early Warning (Live) Driven The Enemy Within I don't plan to play these on my new turntable with my high end cartridge, but I felt like I had to share these with both the Rush and vinyl communities. Hardly high-quality, but nonetheless, some really interesting pieces of Rush history. Do you have anything in your vinyl collection that is "out there"? http://i.imgur.com/RUOOUX3.jpg http://i.imgur.com/GW28MnC.jpg http://i.imgur.com/ymlNgxw.jpg http://i.imgur.com/6iRPNis.jpg http://i.imgur.com/T1rwNB9.jpg http://i.imgur.com/utn0hFc.jpg http://i.imgur.com/UtqBYTL.jpg
  15. All quiet on the Rush front, Saturday afternoon here in Tasmania and listening to Subdivisions and thought of my favourite phrase of the moment which is; 'Somewhere out of a memory, Of lighted streets on quiet nights' What's yours?
  16. This is a hypothetical question, of course. We're just making this up for fun.

    Caress of Steel

I wanted to know what everyone's view is of this album. I created a blog post about this album and have received a lot of positivity towards this album, which makes me relieved! I personally love this album, especially the last two songs. What do you guys think? Check out my blog! http://kenoalbumreviewer.blogspot.com/2014/07/rush-caress-of-steel.html?m=1
  19. I'm assuming that there can't be too many TRFers who are into Electric Six, but I just read this post on the bands facebook from a couple of days ago and thought that y'all would find it pretty neat. https://www.facebook...-6/154062438761 Hamilton, Ontario has birthed some giants in the arts and entertainment sphere. Comedy legends Martin Short, Eugene Levy and Dave Thomas of Second City and SCTV are Hamiltonians. Famed Hollywood director Ivan Reitman also hails from Hamilton, as does contemporary dance/pop act Junior Boys. The focus of Electric Six's discussion today is not on any of these figures, giant as they are. Instead, we choose to discuss Neil Peart, drummer for Canada's most successful rock band ever, Rush. Peart didn't have an easy climb to the top of Rock Drummer Mountain, Crazies. Before joining Rush, he lived in London where work was so scarce for him that he was reduced to selling souvenirs to tourists just to survive. Despite his awesome skin work, Neil wasn't finding things easy, but he didn't pity himself. While in London, he discovered the works of Objectivist writer and libertarian pin up girl Ayn Rand. Rand's boostrap ethos inspired Peart to not give up and to not look to the government for any drumming related handouts. He returned to Canada to work for his father and played in an Ontario band called Hush (rhymes with "Rush," doesn't it, Crazies?). After he toiled that way for awhile, he got tipped to an opportunity to audition for Rush (not Hush) and after making a strange impression, got the gig. The rest was history, as his manic drumming style and lyrical content proved inspirational to millions of nerds worldwide. Neil Peart is a classic example of what happens when you refuse to quit and apply hard money principles to one's life. On Wednesday, July 16, Electric Six will purposefully stride upon a stage at The Casbah in Hamilton, Ontario and will do so with zero assistance from the government. Like Neil Peart, Electric Six is a firm believer in the gold standard and the primacy of the individual above all else. Electric Six worries about rampant inflation and the eroding value of its money. Yet, it doesn't worry nearly as much about having to roll in a wheelbarrow full of dollars to buy a loaf of bread as it does giving the Crazies a good time each and every night. For approximately 70 minutes, inclusive of encore, Electric Six is gonna bust a musical cap in the ass of Hamiltonian Crazies. Percussion World is not Neil Peart and he doesn't have anywhere close to the same sized kit that man uses, but he's gonna lay down a non-stop beat a Crazy won't be able to resist. Percussion World is going to apply Austrian Economics principles to the drums on Wednesday night and you'll see where that gets you, Crazy. It gets you where you want to go. 2 days ago
  20. I am debating between Clockwork Angels and Fly By Night to be their hardest albums IMO. What do you guys think is their hardest, most metal-like album?
  21. I've always known that Geddy's parents were Holocaust survivors. Recently, I learned that they actually met in the concentration camp. They were even separated at one point, but through some miracle of human perserverance they were able to reunite and create a life together. The story is as poignant as it is tragic; and I couldn't help but be moved almost to tears. I got to thinking: without the holocaust, without the most awful and despicable event in modern human history, there would be no Geddy Lee, there would be no Rush. So, it begs the question, was it worth it??
  22. Listening to FTK this morning and examining the lyrics I couldn't help but think of the similarities to Game of Thrones, Hadn't seen to much about this online, but for a Zeppelin forum where someone brought it up, what are your thoughts? I only got into Game of Thrones in the past 6 months so didn't put these 2 together before that... Any GoT and FtK fans out there ? :)
  23. A while ago I posted my ultimate Rush concert setlist, which received overwhelmingly negative criticism, with some people accusing me of “trying to destroy Geddy’s voice” and stuff like that. But after a few months of listening to deeper material and noticing trends in recent tours, I have put together a setlist that I hope will satisfy everyone and not bring up any problems. R41 anybody? Set one Dreamline Entre nous Limelight Superconductor Bravado Vital signs Cygnus X-1/Hemispheres instrumental medley Driven Vapor trail Animate New world man Set two The enemy within The weapon Witch hunt Freeze Kid gloves Drum solo/The anarchist Broons bane/Closer to the heart Far cry Headlong flight Subdivisions 2112 (overture/finale)/YYZ Afterimage Time stand still The garden Encore The spirit of radio Tom Sawyer Marathon Like the recent Clockwork Angels tour, this setlist features a lot of deeper tracks from their 80’s catalogue, such as “Kid gloves” and “Entre nous”. The FEAR series is played in its entirety for the first time, and “Broons bane”, a classical guitar piece Lerxst used to begin “The trees” with, serves as the intro to “Closer to the heart”. And finally, there are fan favorites from the 70’s and 90’s included, as well as newer material ranging from Vapor trails to Clockwork angels. I really like this setlist, and seeing it live would be unbelievable. What do you all think?
  24. So, besides being a big Rush fan, I really love Tool. Recently I went to their show in Portland and splurged on a VIP pass, which included a Q&A and meet and greet with Adam (Jones, the guitarist, if you're not into the band). I've read a lot of interviews where Alex praises Adam's guitar playing/composition as a fan and an influence, so I wanted to ask Adam if he felt the same way. He told me he "absolutely loves" Rush, and would go to sleep listening to them, then wake up and start listening again - especially when he was younger. He also said that 2112 was his "musical awakening". Apart from that the Tool VIP was a great experience: seats in the second row, Adam talked for a couple hours to the group and demonstrated some guitar playing techniques as well as playing the song Jambi for us. I even got to strum his Les Paul! Sorry if this is a bit off topic, but I thought I'd share. Check out Tool if you haven't before, and maybe someday their new album will come out.
