  1. So I mentioned in another thread that I was going to start buying parts to build a Sportscaster, but the money's just not there. So I'm doing a "first draft" on a Squier so I'll have the experience to do it right (and probably just move some of the parts over) when I have the money to buy a MIM Strat or whatever. But I'm stuck at the switch. So many people have said Alex used a "Gibson switch" or "Les Paul style switching" that I went out and got a Les Paul switch. Then I found where Freddy G. said the wiring is Bridge/Neck + Middle/Neck, and I can't for the life of me figure out how to do that with a two-position common-center Gibson switch. Then I read somewhere that it's a special 3-pole switch used in the three-humbucker Les Paul Deluxe. I googled for an hour for "three position Gibson switch" and got nothing, plus a lot of links to normal, two position Gibson switches. Nobody seems to have a wiring diagram for this either, and so I'm sitting here ready to solder, I might or might not have the right switch, and can't find this answer. I sent _pete_ an email a few days back but haven't heard from him. Anybody have any idea? If it was a SuperStrat I'd just experiment, but my temperament doesn't do well with having to wire it up one way, assemble it, put strings on, try it, then take the strings off, disassemble it, try it a different way, reassemble it, put strings back on it, etc. Probably the #1 reason I hate working on Strats. Anyway, if anyone could point me in the right direction, this is driving me mad. -mark
  2. I've looked through the previous game and I thought it looked like a lot fun to play, so I've decided to make a sequel to the game. I'll start it with this, I don't know if this'll be too funny, if funny at all, but I'll at least try. "Argh, Alex! This is the last time I let you borrow my glasses! Thanks to you misplacing them, I can't see a damn thing I'm playing!" That's the best I can do, at least at this moment, sorry if it's not funny.
  3. Hi, I just joined this forum yesterday and I was looking for a place to post this topic and I felt this was the best place to put it in. My question is, does anybody go to the website rushradio.net aka Rush Radio 2112 and has anybody noticed recently that the website hasn't been able to load up for a few days, I thought it was just temporarily down, but now I don't know. I just really want to know what's going on with the website.
  4. Official permission granted from the king of eliminations himself: _hi_water._ Credit for idea goes to IbanezJam! Have a blast!
  5. Hello! Alex has used several guitars during his career. During the 70s, he mainly used semi-hollow Gibson (ES-335, 345 and 355 white). During the first half of the 80s, he was often seen with 3 modified Fender. A black, a red and a White nickname "Hentor" Then, for a few years (Hord your Fire and Presto) he used Signature guitars with active pickups. In the 90s, he mostly used Paul Reed Smiths and then finally, in the years 2000 and 2010, he mainly used Gibson Les Paul. So what are your Alex top 5 guitars? Here's my mine : Gibson ES-355 '76 (white) : Main guitar for AFTK, Hemisphere, Permanent Wave and some songs for MP. Fender Stratocaster modified "Hentor" : Used for Limelight solo and several songs on MP. Main guitar for Signals, GUP, and Power Windows Gibson EDS 1275 double neck (Red then White) : used on Xanadu Gibson Les Paul '75 (tobacco burst) : Used for All the world's stage and later on Stick it out. On tours in the '90 and '00 Paul Reed Smith CE Bolt-on '90 (black) used among others on Dreamline, Leave my things Alone Special mention for the Fender Telecaster Reissue (blonde). Alex's main writing guitar.
  6. Once you RUSH posers get your hands on the new RUSH Vapor Trails remix edition, will it mean the end of the road for your VT 2002 copy? Or will you find yourself sticking with the old one??? Only time will tell of course, but what is your feeling right now based on the two VT song remixes from a while back? :hi: :hi: :hi: :hi: :hi: :guitar:
  7. I think I captured this link from BookFace but apologize if it has been posted here. The vid descsription tells it all.... Isolated Alex guitar scanned from the wireless amp signal at a live show.... gives me goosebumps to listen to this; so simplified and pure but no less exciting and entertaining, at least that's how I feel.... Rock on! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DTIfYDto3nc
  8. I've listened to both Victor and My Favorite Headache at some length. I prefer Victor but deeply appreciate MFH. My feeling is that these two individual records bracket the broad continuum that represents the total sound that is RUSH. Alex's solo work is guitar-centered and frenetic. Geddy's is richly orchestrated and melodic. On average, wandering between these two "extremes" is the total package that makes RUSH so unique and special. Just my opinion that I felt like sharing to start the New Year.... Rock ON!!!
  9. Recently Alex got the chance to play around with the world's largest guitar effects pedalboard thingie! The article is mostly about the pedals and how they got them to work together, but there is this nice bit about Alex near the bottom. I'l bet that was a great day for him! https://www.sweetwat...rds-pedalboard/
  10. Happy 66th Birthday, Alex !! Luckily for the rest of us, Alexandar Zivojinovich was born 66 years ago today in Fernie, British Columbia. Happy, happy birthday to an awesome guitar player, wonderful friend, and all around goofball! Have a wonderful day, Alex! (Thank you to Lou P. in my FB Rush group for the awesome Alex collage!)
  11. From a rush Facebook post- "Every year, Kansas City natives Paul Rudd, Jason Sudekis and Rob Riggle put on a benefit with the Kansas City Royals that benefits Children's Mercy Hospital. Seems this year they have reached out to Canada for a ringer!" (It's a charity softball game and poker tournament.). Thought you all might enjoy the photos of Alex (and his jersey number!). More photos and info here. https://www.bizjourn...DJrU#g/455356/1
  12. There's a new interview with Alex in Guitar Player magazine. It's about his acoustic gear and the role it has played in Rush's songs . . https://www.guitarpl...stic-chronicles
  13. Geddy and Alex attended the Foo Fighters concert last night in Toronto. (No sign of Geddy's mom or Rod from Toronto in the photos, though!). Here is Geddy's Instagram post accompanying the photos he posted. Nice to see him with Alex again! geddyimagesA great big cheers to @foofighters and their super kind crew for an awesome show and much appreciated hospitality shown to myself and my bestie Alex last night in our hometown of Toronto. A truly great hang! Kudos to Taylor for that killer drum solo and for rockin' that Rush T shirt! #foofighters #sometimesgoodguysfinishfirst ! #RushFoos #Taylorrocks
  14. In case it wasn't noticed and I haven't seen anything on TRF about it, Marco Minnemann has a new CD out with our own Alex playing on 3 tracks and Joe Satriani on 4. I don't know quite what make of his music based on limited listening but for those of you who are interested. It's called Barrago and is available on Marco's website or Lazybones Music.
  15. Was thinking about Alex's playing and thought it would be fun to compile my 10 favorite Lifeson solos. I pulled these from the top of my head and didn't listen to or look up anything as I wanted it to be organic. Here they are: Working Man La Villa Strangiato Freewill The Analog Kid The Weapon Kid Gloves Between the Wheels Emotion Detector The Garden Anesthetize What are yours?
  16. RushIsABand put up this video- an interview with Alex from the August 29th Medlock-Krieger golf benefit in Los Angeles for St. Jude's Hospital for Children. The interviewer is really hard to hear, so you get to make up your own questions! :P Not much new, but it's always good to see Alex. :) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L_sp7SdvnnI

  19. More from RushIsABand website about Alex's appearance at Alice Cooper's golf benefit earlier this week- (thanks RIAB-more details on their site!) "There was a Rock and Roll Vampire Bash in connection with the golf tournament Sunday evening from 4:30-10PM which included Live Entertainment on the PCS Stage with Alice Cooper and friends, including Alex Lifeson, Danny Seraphine (Chicago), Tommy Thayer (KISS), Frank Sidoris (Slash), and Neal Smith (Alice Cooper). The Arizona Republic posted a review along with some photos to their website this past Monday and gave some details regarding what songs were performed and who performed them: ... [Cooper] and Frank Sidoris took the stage, Cooper announcing "Tonight, we're a cover band" before leading the band in a spirited version of "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction," after which he did a brilliant parody of Mick Jagger's stage movie. Then, they brought out Seraphine and Thayer to "go back even further than 'Satisfaction,'" as Cooper put it, on a ragged but raucous rendition of Chuck Berry's "Johnny B. Goode" that definitely played to Thayer's strengths on that Gibson Les Paul as Alice and Dash shared vocal duty. Thayer was even better suited to the next song, Kiss' "Rock and Roll All Nite," on which also sang. As someone who grew up on Cooper and Kiss, I can't tell you how surreal it was to see Cooper singing "Rock and Roll All Nite." Maybe all those arguments my brother and I used to have over which of those artists was better back in grade school (I was Team Alice) could have been resolved with, "You don't have to choose." Who knew? Of course, the fact that Lifeson was also on stage playing "Rock and Roll All Nite" would probably strike more people as surreal. But Lifeson looked like he was loving every minute of it. Zelisko joined the fun for "Wild Thing," which rocked and included a jaw-dropping solo from Lifeson and Seraphine rocking more like a garage-rock fan than a veteran of Chicago. When the song was over, Cooper proudly noted, "That's what bar bands do." ..." Entire newspaper article and lots of photos at http://www.azcentral...feson/83503540/ There's also a (pretty fuzzy) Youtube video of the "band" and Alex doing "Wild Thing" below the photos! :P http://i425.photobucket.com/albums/pp338/plantfan40/635971801567723688-alice-cooper-concert-1026.jpg http://i425.photobucket.com/albums/pp338/plantfan40/635971801566631681-alice-cooper-concert-931.jpg http://i425.photobucket.com/albums/pp338/plantfan40/635971801568659694-alice-cooper-concert-366.jpg
  20. Believe me, I know this sounds crazy. I have a coworker who swears that when he was in high school and college (late 70s/early 80s) it was common knowledge that Alex claimed to have learned to play guitar from Jimi Hendrix while he was in a coma. I've laughed at this many times but he still sticks to it. After doing some searching on the topic I've come up blank. Has anyone here ever heard of this rumor or is this guy the only one who has ever heard of it. Thanks for the help!!
  21. Rush Is A Band is quoting an article on a British website- http://tbivision.com/highlight/2015/09/channels-switch-ott/475681/ that says a new streaming (or as they keep calling it, OTT) service is starting in Canada next year and Alex will have a guitar show on it. Here is the info from RIAB- neither the original website or RIAB say when the service is supposed to start or if it will be available in the US. (I dunno about these things, all I have is HBOgo for my kids; can people get, say Netflix, all over the world?) "TBI Vision published an article yesterday on the recent surge in OTT and direct-to-consumer services designed to reach customers who are leaving the traditional TV space. According to the article, a new direct-to-consumer company out of Canada called TableRock Media plans on launching a new guitar show next year with Rush's Alex Lifeson: ... New players are, however, taking channels to market without ever having had exposure on a traditional EPG or pay TV platform. Out of Canada, TableRock was created by former GlassBox TV founders Jeffrey Elliot and Joseph Arcuri, the latter of whom is also a former president of AOL Canada. Former Discovery Channel Canada president and HDTV founder Ken Murphy heads the new company's board, and with the team in place TableRock is now planning super-niche OTT channels. "We saw that there is an opportunity in delivering niche content over OTT," Elliot says. "At the start of pay TV people said it was absurd to have a one-genre channel, but they worked, and in 2015 people are willing to pay for well-produced, curated, niche content delivered on-demand." TableRock's first offerings, launching early next year, will focus on specific interest areas including aviation, guitars and motorcycles. "Each of these are multi-billion dollar industries and cover subjects that go under the radar in terms of conventional TV. They are too niche in the old way of doing TV, but work in OTT." The company plans to make about 80% of its content, with a guitar show with Rush's Alex Lifeson and a motorcycle show with David Hatch, one of the TableRock exec team and the host of TSN series Motorcycle Experience. Arcuri says TableRock's OTT channels can co-exist alongside pay TV, Netflix and YouTube because each fulfils a different purpose. "We liken it to breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacking," says Arcuri. "Netflix is dinner and YouTube is snacking. We are breakfast and lunch." ...No further details are available at this time. Thanks to John at Cygnus-X1.net for the heads up."
  22. I was wondering if anybody has sent in any vinyl Rush albums, CD booklets, or photos to the venue to be signed by the band? Im going to see the boys June 10th in Buffalo, and I contacted my venue and they said they would forward any fan mail to the band to be signed. Has anybody gotten anything back yet, signed? If so, please post a photo!
  23. Not sure if this thread has been done before, but I figured I'd start it anyways. Pretty straightforward: what's the best guitar sound/song on each album. In your opinion of course (unless it disagrees with mine ;) ) (As usual posting only the albums I've listened to ) Rush: ...Working Man for the riff, but if you ignore Alex's less experienced earlier style the whole album is great for guitar! 2112: 2112, namely the solos in Presentation, Soliloquy, and Grand Finale, but I love the start of Something For Nothing AFTK: Xanadu (for the intro) Hemispheres: La Villa Strangiato (was there ever any question?) PeW: The Spirit Of Radio MP: Red Barchetta Signals: The Analog Kid P/G: Between The Wheels PoW: Territories/Middletown Dreams HYF: Turn The Page/Open Secrets/Lock And Key ... CA: Clockwork Angels (that guitar entrance is still the most amazing sound on the album to me)
  24. This is something that I've been wondering about for some time and I'm sure it's been discussed but I got no results from searching. For live performances of Seven Cities of Gold, Alex had a second guitar on a performance stand. On the DVD he goes up to it and strums the open strings during the outro, but I really can't hear it. I also remember him using it at the first Chicago show, to similar sonic effect. I noticed that by the Milwaukee gig in 2013, he stopped bringing it out. Does anybody have any clue what the point of the second guitar was? I can only guess that it was some kind of weird experiment that didn't really work out the way that Al wanted, so he ditched it.
