  1. I agree that photo is great. Hard to find a good shot of Geddy's full keyboard setup on those tours (apart from watching the ESL video, where it's dark and hard to see what's what). Looks like the location is Bingley Hall in Stafford England. Here are a few more good photos from that venue on the Permanent Waves tour (the tuner can be spotted in the first one): http://media.gettyimages.com/photos/geddy-lee-singer-and-bassist-and-alex-lifeson-guitarist-of-rush-on-picture-id123276783 http://media.gettyimages.com/photos/geddy-lee-singer-and-bassist-with-canadian-rock-band-rush-holding-his-picture-id123276716 http://media.gettyimages.com/photos/geddy-lee-singer-and-bassist-with-canadian-rock-band-rush-holding-his-picture-id123276628 I did notice an announcement about Rush donating various items to the Canada Museum of Civilization. A Conn Strobotuner was listed in the donations - so perhaps this same box is on display there now.

    The Camera Eye

I did rewatch a couple Time Machine clips of this song to see what Geddy's doing. He is indeed playing most of the synth parts by hitting single keys to trigger samples. Kind of a shame, looks like he's waiting for a bus during the intro.

There's been way too much water under the bridge since I saw the MP tour (I think they also played it on the Signals tour, but again, that was a long time ago), so I don't remember this specifically, but what would have prevented them from putting a mic by the OB for those tours? Nothing stopping them, but from looking at the photos I wasn't seeing a mic over there. Of course in the photo below, it almost looks like he could use his main mic (possibly swinging it over closer). On a side note, I think he must be using one of the Oberheim expression pedals to fade the sample/hold effect in and out. When listening to those live clips, he is definitely controlling it dynamically (and it's all coming from the same synth - the sample/hold effect actually makes it hard to hear the chords he's playing in the intro - on the record it's two separate tracks, so both are heard clearly)
  4. A couple more photos .. Circa Hemispheres / Permanent Waves (since he's got the monster Oberheim 8-voice synth) http://rockchoice.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/07/Geddy-Lee-208x300.jpg Moving Pictures / ESL timeframe, now it's around the corner with the top of the 8-voice .. http://media.gettyimages.com/photos/geddy-lee-and-alex-lifeson-leave-the-stage-at-wembley-arena-in-london-picture-id109327955 And you can see it in this sound check video, between the white Oberheim sequencer and the monster keyboard rig (mostly in the beginning of the video, his body blocks it the rest of the time)
  5. Indeed, that looks like the box! I did stumble on a photo at the link below where it looks like it's connected to the headphones output of the Minimoog .. so that makes some sense. Seems a little strange to have a tuner that prominent on stage though, even if it was necessary (I suspect the Minimoog tuning would drift based on temperature). Photo (can't link directly) - http://media.gettyimages.com/photos/bassist-geddy-lee-of-canadian-progressive-rock-band-rush-at-a-studio-picture-id99045122 Lorraine - Yep, I am a nut for keyboard instruments. I have a big double-manual Neupert harpsichord from the 60s that I love to play (same model as heard on lots of 60s Los Angeles tracks, Addams Family, etc).
  6. Since I've been trying to resolve lingering Rush minutiae lately, here's another one .. On the AFTK tour, Geddy added the Minimoog/Taurus pedal setup. In the tour photos, there is always a small box on a stand next to the Minimoog. I always figured it was a small Minimoog-only monitor speaker, or something similar. But that doesn't entirely make sense to me, since it's tiny and perched up so high (suggesting it's something he might adjust on the fly). The connection to it seems to be that white coily cord, which (from looking at other photos) doesn't seem to be connected to the Minimoog output. Anyone have ideas? Here are a couple photos of the box in question .. http://rocktotick.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/Rush-Tour-and-Tickets-2015.jpg

    The Camera Eye

Not yet, I'm going to give a listen later tonight. I'm sure in typical Rush fashion they found a way to pull it off just like the record. But I am curious how they did it.

    The Camera Eye

I'd love to know how he played this on the Moving Pictures / Exit Stage Left tours, since the OB-X synth was off to his left where there's no microphone. There's also the trick of getting those sample/hold (blippity bloopity) parts to fade in and out. This might be doable with a foot pedal on the back though. Certainly this song got easier to play with the new synth/mic arrangements on the Signals tour.

    The Camera Eye

There is a Signals tour video on YouTube that's got Camera Eye, although it doesn't help if you're trying to watch their playing close up (kind of far audience footage). I believe if you search on 'rush camera eye live 1982' you should find it.

    The Camera Eye

On the original album track, he's got a couple layers from the Oberheim OB-X synth - one playing chords, the other fades in and out with the sample/hold effect (possibly the fluttering you're talking about - sounds like random computer blips and bleeps). The chord he keeps playing is a 'suspended' chord too, which gives it that wanting-to-resolve feeling. Same thing he does on songs like Chemistry - that opening suspended chord hits you over the head with that unresolved feeling. Since he's using modern synths now, he's surely just triggering samples of all this (esp. the sample/hold effect). I love Camera Eye, definitely a showcase of unique Rush synth sounds. One subtle thing I like is the low notes he plays during the intro after the drums come in. They're barely noticeable unless you listen to the isolated synth track, and he only does it a couple times. Sounds like frog farts or something.
  11. Cool! I had also mailed Roger Stowell but was waiting reply. This looks like the gigantic door, light fixture, and balustrade from the photo: Photo of Deep Purple in the same spot .. http://www.deep-purple.net/gallery/mk3/clearwell2.jpg
  12. Fantastic, where did you find that info? It does resemble a view out the garden side of the palace (possibly from the balcony). Haven't found any doors/archways yet that match .. not sure if they remodeled any of that since 1977 (I'm guessing not). The quest continues .. Don't worry, I was 99.9% sure that post was a joke (esp. when it got to Rush performing for the Queen) .. the 0.1% holding out was only because Buckingham Palace's rear balcony actually does have a wall that looks just like the one in the photo. Can't say I've got any better leads, even if that one sounds ridiculous.

  14. I've always wondered where the group photo from the AFTK album was shot. I would've guessed Rockfield Studios in Wales - although from looking at photos and tour videos of that place, I don't see anything resembling this. Anyone happen to ever read where this photo was taken? Also, is this considered the liner or sleeve photo? I know it's not really on the sleeve, and is next to the liner notes .. but the wording describes a 'sleeve photograph' and 'liner photos', which is confusing. I was going to attempt to contact the photographer if nobody knows the location. (I love visiting movie and album locations - would love to get a photo in this spot someday if it still exists) http://www.cygnus-x1.net/links/rush/images/albums/afarewelltokings-1.jpg
  15. QUOTE It might have been a "parking lot" shirt?? I don't recall ever seeing bootleg shirts being sold at The Pavilion (there's not really a good place to do it, even if the mounties didn't chase you away). This shirt will be mine ... LeChuck
  16. Right, that's the $50 shirt I was referring to (I noticed some other people here were referring to it by its price, which is pretty understandable). The main things I remember are that it had a closeup drawing of some of the movers with Time Machine 2010 written in it. I thought it was the front side to the $50 shirt at first, since the art was similar to that clapboard. Anyone recognize this shirt? I saw it on multiple people throughout the night, so pretty sure I wasn't imagining it. LeChuck
  17. Howdy, I noticed at the show last night that a handful of people were wearing a shirt that had a closeup of the Moving Pictures movers and Time Machine 2010 on the front. It was drawn in a similar style to the clapboard on the back of the $50 Moving Pictures shirt - simple art style, distressed, etc. I'm familiar with that $50 shirt, and the faux-1981 MP tour shirt, and it's not either of those. Anyone know where to get that shirt? I didn't see it for sale at any of the booths (although we went after the show), and it's not on the backstage club site either. It looked very cool though, any info on that shirt would be great. LeChuck
