  4. Just a little bit about possible setlist songs I am bummed if 5 songs from MP make it into the setlist Some tour setlist rumors are also finally starting to trickle in. The latest bit of news I've heard is that the band plans on playing all of the Clockwork Angels album minus Caravan and BU2B, both of which were thoroughly covered back on the Time Machine tour. I've also heard the unsurprising news that 5 songs from Moving Pictures will be included in the setlist. It's still relatively early though, so things could certainly change. As always, take these rumors with a big grain of salt.

  11. QUOTE (Shreddy Lee @ Jun 10 2012, 02:29 PM) One of the ways music has changed a great deal over the past few decades is in the idea of the album. I grew up as the sort of digital revolution of music was taking over, and everything was moving to downloading MP3s and all that, though I did use CDs briefly. So to me, an album is simply the collection of songs that are on it. Nothing more. I place all the importance on the songs themselves, and I've never really had any notion of considering an album as one whole work, how the songs "flow" and thinking about how or if they affect one another, the song order, etc. I understand that this is exactly how it used to be, and for some still is, but I feel like to me and likely most of my generation, this is a foreign idea. When I evaluate an album, what I'm really thinking about is how many songs on it I like vs. how many I don't. It comes down to math, really. If I think most of the songs are good, and there's few to none that I don't think are that good, then it's a good album to me. How it flows, and all these other types of things that I often see people talking about, don't enter my mind. To me it's just, here's all the new songs this band has made, one after the other. So, do you place importance on how an album fits together as a whole, how the songs flow and complement each other, etc? If so, why? Is it because you grew up during the era where that was the norm, and are just used to it? If not, why not? And most importantly, is this way of thinking about an album still relevant today? I listen to them as a bunch of songs Do not care what the story is as long as I enjoy the tunes
  12. QUOTE (trenken @ Jun 5 2012, 08:15 PM) Really the main thing for me is the lyrics arent doing much for me. This whole story concept is not interesting at all to me. It doesnt touch me in anyway, I find some of the lyrics awkward. But ive said in the past at this point the lyrics in Rush songs are the least important part to me now. Just not a real big fan of his lyrics and unwillingness to come up with clever metaphors to disguise what he's trying to say, and instead is taking the easier path of writing in a very direct plain English manner which for me leave no room for listener interpretation. I used to be able to make Rush songs mean whatever I wanted it too, now these lyrics are so easy to understand and they're so descriptive about the story itself which isnt interesting to me so they just dont do anything for me. The best post ever about CA
  13. QUOTE (J2112YYZ @ Jun 8 2012, 08:45 AM) QUOTE (wilb1972 @ Jun 8 2012, 07:53 AM) QUOTE The full CA would result in a concert buzzkill of frightening degree. Did that happen in 1976 when they first played 2112 live? Or in '78 when they played Cyngus X-1 followed by Hemispheres? Thats 30 minutes of new music right there? And fans loved it. I am sure some were yelling, "Play In the Mood!" But for the most part, I like to think Rush fans aren't that close-minded about new material -- if its strong material. The buzzkill during the 2nd set of SnA when they played what, 5 new tracks in a row? That was a bummer cause most of those songs were mediocre. CA kills those songs. IMO. I will never understand the logic behind that argument. There's a huge difference between when they played all that new material back in the mid to late 70s then there is now. They were still a new band on the music scene and most of their fans were probably younger and were opened to hearing the new material played. Plus, Rush didn't have that many albums so there wasn't as much material for the fans to digest like there is now, so more people were into the new music. The major thing that's changed since then is how many big hits they had in the 80s and how the fanbase has changed because of that. The bulk of the crowd that goes to see them now are there for the hits and that's it. That's why playing a bunch of songs off the new album is so much different now then it was back during 2112/AFTK/Hemispheres era. Back then thats what we wanted to hear the new stuff AFTK tour we couldn't wait to hear the new songs same with Hemispheres. Nowadays if you dont give the crowd a healthy dose of hits and to many new songs forget it the concourses are filled with people just hanging out. Rush is probably the exception were its more then just casual fans seeing them

  19. QUOTE (UltimoGuitarist @ Jun 5 2012, 04:14 PM) QUOTE (snowdog2112 @ Jun 5 2012, 05:09 PM) It's about the lyrics and the music equally. It's absolutely stunning, it's about the only song ever that made me tear up. If you're just into metal or musical gymnastics I can understand how it wouldn't connect, though. Well don't get me wrong, I certainly appreciate the softer mellow side of Rush as well, but only if theres at least a good melody to the song, something to grab onto thats catchy. This song just seems to go on and on and the music is really repetative. I just don't get it that's all. What's the song about? Is it something about the lyrics that are getting to everyone? *shrug*
  20. I like the fade outs
