  1. You know, Wal basses are quite good basses and have a thick bottom end when dialed in. The reason Geddy's Wal sounds like it does on those recordings has nothing to do with the bass and everything to do with choice... Geddy's and the producer. Search Trevor Jones, Justin Chancellor, Colin Moulding just for a start on how a Wal can sound. Also, it was the time period. Very little mid to late 80s music production grabs my attention.

    Presto!

More on Presto... There are a couple of meh tunes (anagram, scars) and a piece of garbage (superconductor). The rest of the album is great. Remember, it was recorded in the late 80s. I can't think of one lp recorded in the late 80s that sounded good. As for Geddy's sound, it's an active bass. Geddy always favors the bridge pickup and with the active pickups the brilliance and crispness is brought out and the bass is sacrificed. Active bass boost is out there but he didn't use it. The single coils on the Jazz and the Rick were a bit more focused and less wide in spectrum. I think it is a fine record with a decent sound for the tubeless 80s digital crapfest. Listen to Momentary Lapse and then listen to Presto.

    Presto!

I like Presto, there are a lot of great songs on this record. That being said, I think Superconductor is a horrible addition to this record. It is my least favorite Rush song and I would neither brush, floss or engage in any other bathroom activity more befitting this blemish on an otherwise fine record...
  4. Even though Dreamline is one of a couple of songs I like off RTB, I will have to go with Middletown Dreams. MD is one of my favorite 80s Rush tunes. Also, my friend kind of ruined Dreamline for my when it came out. Whenever the chorus came on he would sing "we're well hung" and to this day that is what I hear...

    Caress of Steel

Tonight I will pour a glass of the pure, put on Fountain, and take in the sounds of that era. Great music, great sounds, and some great playing.

    Caress of Steel

    Best clean guitar sound ever
  7. Since Signals came out. How can that be 30+ years?
  8. Love that tune. The notes he hits at the end are amazing! Unleashed in the east!
  9. My lifeblood spills over... The most endangered species The honest man Will still survive annihilation The bell tolls for thee I'm sure there's more but that is off the top of my head.
  10. My mother was a music teacher and had a huge influence on how I listen to music and she is why I listen to so many different types of music.
  11. Superconductor... Stupid riff that doesn't fit with the rest of the song. Dull chorus. I think Presto is where the intricacy slowed.
  12. Man, I can't remember. Every one from Power Windows forward on release day. I heard Signals, PeW, and pictures all around the same time. I was 11 or 12. It could have been E..SL...
  13. I sound the same regardless of the string gauge or bass that I use. Active does add something. I read that on the RTB tour Geddy was using the same rig he had been using for years. It must have been the production and not the bass. Trevor Jones made a Wal sound massive.
  14. Favorite was Iron Maiden. I'm surprised to see Rattle that Lock mentioned so many times. I love David Gilmour, but find this to be the biggest musical disappointment of the decade so far.
  15. Most of Roll the Bones and most of Presto but if I had to pick one, Superconductor. I still remember watching them play Xanadu on the RTB tour and blasting into that piece of excrement halfway through. Superconductor, by a country mile.

    Rocinante

Cool, I didn't know Steinbeck was a Rush fan. ;) excellent ! I was thinking the same thing!

    Rocinante

It was also the name of Steinbeck's RV.
  18. Circumstances with Open Secrets coming close
  19. Hemispheres has been my number 1 since I first heard it.
  20. I think you misunderstood me. This album is in my top 3. It always has been. I just thought it should have a deeper sound. I'm sorry Mic. I did misunderstand you. No worried. It's in my Top 3 too at the moment. 1. Hemispheres (Will always be my number one) 2. Grace Under Pressure 3. Hold Your Fire If you replace Grace Under Pressure with Signals, you have my top 3. Grace is up there for me.
