  1. QUOTE (Xanadoood @ Nov 18 2011, 01:43 PM) How about releasing some new music? No one gives a shit about videos anymore ..it sad to see old bands unable to stay relevant ...the fact they keep talking about a new " album" shows how out of touch they are.. What are you talking about? They ARE releasing new music--that's why they're doing the video. Music video = new single. And yes, people do give a shit about music videos, maybe not in the 1980s-MTV-sense, but there's a thing called YouTube where some of the most popular videos are music videos. You act as if VH is the first band to do a video in 20 years. How exactly are they trying to stay "relevant"? Your use of quotes around "album" makes me think that you think the term is outdated. It's not. Neither is "record" or "CD" (at this point) for that matter. What would you like them to call it? Collection of songs? Digital compilation? EVERY band calls their new album an album. I'm really curious as to what VH is doing that makes them look so out-of-touch to you. They're not doing anything that other bands aren't doing.
  2. In the book "Contents Under Pressure" it claims that Geddy said "Power Windows" was his favorite album of the 80's and 90's followed by "Roll the Bones" and "Test for Echo." I don't know how much truth there is to the statement, but there you go.
  3. Genesis - The Brazilian Genesis - Second Home by the Sea (unless we're doing a strict no-vocals rule, but it's an instrumental) Genesis - The Waiting Room Todd Rundgren - A Treatise on Cosmic Fire
  4. Even if you had Terry Brown in that poll, I would still say that Peter Collins was by far the best producer they've had. Terry Brown only gets recognition because he was the producer during everyones favorite period of the band and wasn't producer during their least favorite period of the band. Collins demonstrated he can make an album sound great whether they're putting an emphasis on atmosphere and synths (PoW and HYF) or getting grungy and raw (CP and T4E)--pretty much Rush's polar opposites sound-wise. He understood that Rush was a constantly evolving band and made sure they sounded their best doing it. Brown and Raskulinecz have shown that they have this deep-stemmed opinion of what Rush should be doing and how they should sound. If I had to rank the producers (honestly, I can't really speak about Henderson and Northfield--one album isn't really enough to appropriately judge): 1. Peter Collins 2. Terry Brown 3. Rupert Hine (I'm not going to bitch that Presto and RTB don't have enough balls like everyone else, I just got the sense that he didn't really understand the workings of the band and how best to approach the respective albums). 4. Nick Raskulinecz (Can't stand him--he's a metalhead who pretends he's a Rush fan. Based on the interviews and footage I've seen of him, the extent of him being a Rush fan must have ended with Hemispheres--I haven't seen any proof he's influenced them as much as he'd like to think).
  5. I personally think Alex looked the coolest between 82-85. To one's own, I suppose.
  6. While I voted an emphatic "yes," I think it's mostly because of my incredible itch to hear The Enemy Within live. I don't particularly care to hear Witch Hunt again, and I really don't have a huge fondness to hear Freeze. The Weapon, however, would be awesome. Maybe just parts I and II for the tour
  7. QUOTE (phlaaps @ Oct 9 2011, 03:31 PM) Maybe the same reason Alex pulls faces, Neil nods/turns his head to the beat and I check my back pocket for my wallet when I stand up. Habit? I don't think someone knocking the side of their head should ever be considered "habit."

    Am I the only one?

I'd say it's probably top 5 on the album (take that for what it's worth). The problem is that it's just too formulaic to be noteworthy outside of Test for Echo...no real "intro" (like most of the album) just Alex playing the fairly-borring chords of the verses and no real "outro," just ending on the fade-out of a lone chord. No one does anything particularly impressive. The saving grace for the song is the chorus--it's wonderfully melodic and inspirational (even if it's not exactly the gold standard for inspirational Rush songs or melodic choruses).
  10. I always thought Signals could do with a re-ordered track-listing. 1. Countdown 2. Digital Man 3. New World Man 4. Losing It 5. The Analog Kid 6. Chemistry 7. The Weapon 8. Subdivisions On a side-note, it's good to see someone around here who finds "Second Nature" and "Tai Shan" to be the bottom two on HYF
  11. QUOTE (tangy @ Sep 5 2011, 11:36 AM) as i have said before: young dudes rock harder than old dudes. But it doesn't mean they rock better

    music radar poll

QUOTE (tel @ Sep 5 2011, 11:48 AM) obviously 9,19,27,28 &30 are ridiculous but what should of been here instead? The poll was for the top 30 live acts. Tell me again why on earth you think Prince doesn't belong on that list?

    RUSH

With with the U, to represent the 2nd quarter of the entire 37 year Rush history.
  14. Currently have these albums by Mr. Rundgren: -Initiation -Faithful -Healing -The Ever Popular Tortured Artist Effect -Nearly Human I also have "POV" by Utopia which I'm counting I personally think the man is a complete genius even if I don't necessarily love all of his work (it can be pretty hit or miss with me). I liken him to a David Bowie of sorts where he can easily go between super experimental pieces and more "mainstream" pop songs without much sacrifice either way. Initiation blows my mind completely. Enjoy photographing him! It seems I never hear ANYTHING about him being on the road, and when I finally check to see, he's usually nowhere near the state. Here's hoping I can manage to see him at least once in my life.

  18. QUOTE (Can-Utility @ Aug 17 2011, 11:43 PM) I can only assume that Illegal Alien is Genesis' "iconic track" though I think that Turn It On Again is far better Trust me, "Illegal Alien" is FAR from being Genesis' iconic track. It really depends how you want to approach the group...You could take the Gabriel-era approach and claim "Supper's Ready," "Firth of Fifth," "The Lamb...," or "The Carpet Crawlers," (which the fanbase often does) but outside of the fans, the first Genesis song to come to most peoples minds would not be from the Gabriel-era (so do we count iconic as band-defining or most popular?). As far as the Collins-era goes, I think most people (even non-fans) would know pretty much anything off of the "Invisible Touch" album (as much as it's easy to say negative remarks about the Collins-era, most of the population wouldn't know much about the 5 previous albums before IT), but as far as labeling it "iconic," that's a bit of a stretch (is it absolutely great material? Yes, but iconic? I wouldn't say so). ...and out of all that, none of the above songs would be my favorite Genesis track, that goes to "Me and Sarah Jane" or "Home by the Sea."
  19. QUOTE (invisibleairwaves @ Aug 17 2011, 06:25 PM) So I take it you guys have evidence that the prosecution in the case didn't? I'm sure a lot of people would love to hear it. It's astonishing how many people here are siding with Gene here. Gene had absolutely no business making any sort of comments about Michael, especially ones making bogus, unprovable claims that were ACQUITTED in the court-of-law. Say what you want about the event existing in the first place, but there's no reason for Kiss to be anywhere near it even if Gene had never made his comments. No one is asking Gene to apologize for what he said, so I don't know where some of those comments came from. Gene knows what he said and he knows why Kiss won't be at the event, so as long as neither side attacks the other, hopefully this ordeal will subside. I really don't get what you guys have against Michael (or maybe it's just the freakin' Kiss Army around here).
  20. So the entire point of this thread is to share that you got annoyed by some woman at the gym because you had to pause Rush for a few seconds?
  21. Voted 5150 and I'll leave it at that.
  22. QUOTE (ColdFireYYZ @ Aug 10 2011, 06:39 PM) Also, is everyone who bought tickets in the 1st 30 rows eligible? I bought them from the official website, not from scalpers. Just making sure I was supposed to get the package. I'm not sure what you mean there...If you bought the VIP package then you're obviously getting the VIP package (which are in the first 15 rows, not 30). If you bought a ticket in the first 15 rows but didn't specifically buy the package, then you're not getting the package. I think that it is possible to have a seat in the first 15 rows without getting the VIP package, so you may need to check on that if that could be the issue.
  23. There are similarities, but if Rush were to get "sued" it would probably get immediately thrown out. A court would have to prove that Rush knowingly ripped-off that song. A constant pulsing synth bassline exists in far more songs than just those two (which is really the only distinct similarity). Aside of that, the drum work between the two songs are completely different. Yes they both involve a relatively similar constant closed-and-open hi-hat pattern sound-wise (but again, so do a million other songs), but The Weapon clearly has a far different--and more complex-pattern. Everything else about that song sounds NOTHING like The Weapon. Once the vocals kick in on the Visage song, it loses pretty much any similarities it had to the Rush song. Now if Fade to Grey had a similar vocal delivery as The Weapon, then it would be kind of a different story...
