  1. All the talk about the cover art clock reminds me of the old NMS, when people were talking about Neil's watch on the Presto sleeve. Given the "Get a life!" comment from 22 years ago, it's ironic that Hugh (and probably Neil as well, since he is so involved with the artwork) is now so obviously throwing out a playful nod to 2112 on the new cover... :-) From NMS, July, 1990: ---------------------------------- Subject: Neil says "Get A Life!" Date: Thu, 5 Jul 90 10:30:53 MDT From: Doug Grumann ---------------------------------- About a week ago, Rush was playing Cal Expo here in Sacramento. A friend of mine who is a friend of Neil Peart's set up a short tour of Hewlett-Packard so I could show off all our high-tech computer goodies. I'd never met Neil before, and from murmurings I've heard on the Rush Fan's Digest, I thought he'd be really stuck-up. We'll folks, he's just a normal guy. He's talkative and outgoing. One of the reasons he comes off as remote in public is because he HATES "groupies". He doesn't like being idolized and fawned over. Among the computer stuff I showed him was "Notes". We talked about how people from all over the world contributed to notes strings like rec.music.misc and alt.sex. His thoughts ran along the same lines as most managers': Theres a great waste-of-time potential there! I also told Neil about the Rush Fans Digest. I tried to explain that most of us don't spend 24 hours a day fawning over every issue. Unfortunately I showed him part of an issue, which happened to contain lengthy diaglogues concerning the deep meaning of his WATCH. This obviously did not make a great impression. His quote was: "Get A Life!!!". Luckily, the other computer & X-window demos came off better.

    1974 concert cd release

Wow they even got the date wrong on the '75 Agora show. "May, 1975". It was actually April 7, 1975.

Are you saying you have this SAME test pressing? Or a test pressing of something else?

    rare test pressing

Hey Folks, Do any of the Rush collectors on here happen to have any TEST PRESSINGS? If so, I'm curious to hear how much these things tend to sell for. I have a friend who has an extremely rare test pressing (almost certainly a one-of-a-kind item). It's a 12" test pressing of "Distant Early Warning". One side is from an Analog recording source and the B side is from an early digital recorded source ("JVC"). This is pre-mastered, to see which sounded better, from Le Studio (1984). Two versions of each, flat and with EQ. The date on the pressing is "2/6/84" (from Masterdisk Corporation). He is contemplating selling it, and just curious as to the market... thanks, -Skip
  6. QUOTE (Mika @ Jul 8 2011, 01:58 PM) As for a prediction: wouldn't it be cool if fans could vote for what songs they'd like to see played live, and for Rush to take that into account? I love getting surprised by the unexpected gems, like 'The Camera Eye' - was amazed how good it was live. I'd make a vote for 'Everyday Glory' - live, it would definitely send shivers down my spine! 7. These song titles were referenced in the 1988 "Visions" biography by The B-Man: http://www.2112.net/powerwindows/transcrip...wiczvisions.htm As for the possibility of some of this stuff being released (assuming any recordings even exist - and this is unconfirmed), I'm guessing that somebody here is referencing the interview that I conducted with Alex back in December, 2008 where he talked about finding some old unlabelled tapes in his studio that he suspected MIGHT contain some of this material: http://guitarinternational.com/2010/07/02/alexlifeson/ Ian Grandy was the band's soundman from 1969-1980, and he has told me that even he does not have any recordings from those early early days, and that the band did not really have recording gear for doing live recordings way back then. There WERE some studio recordings done in 1972 at a "tiny two-track garage facility called Sound Horn" at Rochdale College. Billy Bryans produced those sessions. The bad news is that Visions states that the tapes were later "lost" (MAYBE this is what Alex found?). Bryans himself has told me he does not have those recordings. Finally, if you feel so inclined, go here and click on "Setlists" under "The Early Years" and you can read a write-up I did about some of the (sparse) information that is available about the early setlists: http://www.2112.net/powerwindows/tours/Tours.htm It's a shame we don't have more, but maybe something will turn up. The remainder of the 1974 Laura Secord show would be a nice start. Based on the clip from that included in the documentary, it must have at least one previously unknown song on it... -Skip

  9. QUOTE (thebigguyconnor @ Oct 15 2010, 11:31 AM) Yeah, it's all pretty crazy! Rush should definitely do an archives video release, including some stuff like the video of the concert with them in 1978 (see this for just one song from it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4dXFCckOLxQ) Sorry, but that footage of "Circumstances" isn't from a full "concert". They filmed themselves playing live versions (in an empty hall) of the three "side 2" Hemispheres songs as promo videos for that album. Now, that said.......there was some color live footage of the band performing "Finding My Way" in Beyond The Lighted Stage from a circa 1976/77 show that we'd never seen glimpses of before. Wouldn't THAT be great to get ahold of as a complete show?! Wonder what the story is behind that clip...
  10. QUOTE (tangy @ Jun 28 2010, 02:53 PM) the time machine is malfunctioning!!!! heh, yeah...the time machine is apparently only capable of FOUR stops prior to 1980, and ALL of these have been played on the last 2 or 3 tours: 2112 Closer To The Heart La Villa Working Man Me thinks they might have set the bar for expectations a bit high naming the tour "The Time Machine"...?
  11. QUOTE (snowdog2112 @ Sep 23 2009, 04:26 PM) QUOTE Unfortunately, I honestly don't think they REMEMBER whether or not it was ever played. This is a good point. Sometimes when the band is asked something about their history and they're kind of vague about it some people always assume they're just being coy or don't want to talk about it. The reality is that I'm sure most serious Rush fans and certainly the ones who care enough to collect bootlegs and look at old concert dates and setlists know FAR more about their history than they do. It's not like they sit around listening to their own live albums or anything. There have been several times when I've heard or read one of the three even refer to songs as being on the wrong albums and such. Plus, they said around the TFE tour they had never played Natural Science before then just as one example. There's nothing wrong with that, they just have a different perspective about it. They'd have to be really self-important types to be able to tell you about what their various setlists were and so on. I'd bet a lot of money that they couldn't tell you for sure whether certain songs were performed even on recent tours with any accuracy. I always think about this when people talk about what may still be in their "vault". I don't think they dodge the issue, they simply don't know what all exists for sure. I've read that Neil basically had to ask for help in finding that Auburn Hills video from 1994 so he could put a clip of his solo on Anatomy of a Drum Solo on there, they also said at the time that they simply got the clips from Don Kirschner's show for the R30 DVD off the internet, and someone in another thread talked about someone recently showing Alex a copy of that 1976 Passaic show with the implication that it was new to him. I'll bet that if someone went up to them and asked "Hey, is there any chance that the footage from the Pinkpop Festival from 1979 will ever be released?" they'd probably not even know what you were talking about. There's an interview on youtube with Geddy and Alex talking about the old stuff on the second disc of R30 and they had clearly forgotten all about some of that stuff until Geddy's brother dug it out. I think the people who assume they just have this vast library of stuff (video anyway) that they know about at their fingertips that's waiting to be released are just assuming too much. Could not have said all of this any better. 100% agreed.
  12. By the way, I actually think Geddy's memory on things like this tends to be a bit better than Alex's. I've heard/read where he has "mis-remembered" stuff many times, confusing tours/dates/etc...
  13. QUOTE (Don Quixote @ Sep 23 2009, 01:53 PM) While it clears up the question of the infamous "Cousin Tapes", it still leaves one to wonder what the headline show at Massey Hall was in 1976, and whether or not they played a full version of The Fountain of Lamneth. I'm betting it never happened. Someone, sometime, somewhere has got to corner Geddy or Alex (likely the easier of the two to get the answer out of) and ask point blank if they ever played it live. Unfortunately, I honestly don't think they REMEMBER whether or not it was ever played. I've also talked with two people who were on the crew for that tour (one of them being Ian), and neither of them remembers whether or not Lamneth was ever performed live. (Incidentally, I was told that "I Think I'm Going Bald" WAS performed live at some shows on that tour). But seeing as how that rumored Massey Hall 1/10/76 "set list" came from the SAME source (the guy claiming to be Geddy's cousin, etc), I do not think ANY stock can be placed in it. It was almost certainly just MADE UP out of thin air. -Skip
