  1. I agree that there are many talented young people playing the guitar these days. I've also seen a lot of their videos. What concerns me, though, are the many young players who are not much more than mimics. They put out a ton of videos in which they show off their covers of classic guitar riffs. I would be more impressed by these young guitarists if they were making original pieces. Playing a guitar is one thing; being a musician is another. Yes this exactly. Lots of mimics out there who have learned playing tabs but can't be creative and original at all. This might be another old man screaming from his porch comment, but I think it's devalued the importance and impact of the ban halens , pages, becks and Hendrix. Take this YouTube clip as an example.. nothing against this talented young lady, but ..this really sounds nothing like the way Eddie played the original.. her phrasing, swing.. the feel is way off.. she's just rifling through the notes.. but people see this and think that's eddie.. just play as fast as possible with no structure.. and her tone is awful. https://m.youtube.co...h?v=fDTm1IzQf-U So because she plays it slightly different than the original, it's automatically bad? I don't see how anyone can complain about that eruption cover, it's pretty damn good. Phrasing is a little off? Lol, I always catch myself doing that when I've been playing a pice over and over trying to perfect it. Later I usually find a couple sections I need to work on. Also, every player started out learning songs by their heroes. This is Pete Thorn. He's a well regarded studio player in LA. I know he played with Chris Cornell at one time. 2:00 to 3:00 in this clip.. he explains it better than I can. Again, this young lady is very talented. But if I was her teacher, I'd tell her to SLOW DOWN. Key points: he first heard it and started learning it over 20 yeArs before she was born AND he still says he hasn't got it down 100%. Also, 14 year olds usually aren't nuance driven they are usually driven by flash and style and speed. Those are good points. I guess I just see so much of this.. these videos where players are just playing as fast as possible, and that passes as Eddie Van Halen. It feels devalued to me..eddies legacy. And not just him.. all the legends.. Hendrix, page etc.
  2. The only Jazz you'll ever need ..

You see everything in black or white. That's not what he said at all. This. Yeah that wasn't what I was implying. I don't think she was putting her own spin on it. And for an iconic piece like eruption, much like Neil's classic drum break in Tom Sawyer, it's best to stick with the original. From talking to younger players, a lot of them just think someone like Eddie is fast and flash. They miss all the intangibles and idiosyncrasies of his playing.

  6. Seriously. My cousin Debbie from New Jersey was actually born without an asshole. There was a piece of skin covering her anus when she was born. They had to perform surgery to make her poop! Greatest post in the history of TRF
  7. Eddie was more of an innovator mad scientist player. Randy was more studied in his playing and compositions. Eddie has still not come up with something as amazing as the song Diary of a Madman. That whole tune is a f***in masterpiece.
  8. Pop culture status- Elvis Musical innovator - Chuck Funny, but micheal Jackson and Prince are similar IMO. Jackson being the more well known pop culture icon.. Prince being the more versatile and prolific artist.
  9. I posted this thread a while back - it touches on what you wrote Oracle http://www.therushforum.com/index.php?/topic/102268-music-lovers-who-reject-new-music/page__hl__%2Bmusic+%2Blovers+%2Bmusic I had a recent conversation with the friend I mentioned in the thread, and all I can say is that the rejection of new music goes deeper than one might first think .. Again, he brought up the BS of "They don't write songs like that anymore" .. When I asked him what his Top 5 albums of the past year were, he snickered and said that he hasn't bought or listened to anything new in 20 years ... When I asked him "Then how do you know that there is nothing good ?" he was silent .. I remember that thread. I don't think he had much of a basis for comparison if he hasn't heard it. Music is much less guitar driven now than it was in the 70's-90's. Especially what's popular. All you have to do is turn on any top 40 radio to hear that It's not the driving force behind what's popular or cool, like it was back in the day. I've worked with my share of younger folks, and although they may have " rock " music in their musical rotation, it's not the go to music. From my personal experience, EDM is what the kids are into these days. I may be reaching here, and I haven't been to a frat house since the early 90s..walk into a frat party now.. what's playing? Most likely not rock music.

  11. The Enemy Within has an under appreciated intro. Love those fills by Neil.
  12. Yup. If the oboe is still around I don't worry about the guitar. Exactly. Just like the violin is an essential instrument, so is the electric guitar. It will never go away. Heck, you still have Claves. What good are those? Of course guitar will never go away, it's simply not as prevalent as it used to be. You can't deny the financial scoreboard of the music industry. Record companies have gone bust. Guitar Center, Gibson and Fender are deep in debt (per the article). Why? Because no one is paying for music or buying as many instruments. I can't remember the last 'new' rock band that I got excited about...they all are sounding like derivatives of other bands. Even if some band caught my interest, they probably go bust after 2-3 albums after realizing they can't make money. Also, in terms of gear sales it's really easy to get a decent 10-20 year old guitar for cheap on Craigslist. Guitars don't wear out if you take care of them. So buying new is pretty much an impulse buy. Even if you want new, the cheaper 'squire' or 'epiphone' level guitars are fine for the basement diddler...and there's no profit margin in selling those. When I drive by my local Guitar Center they have large posters in the windows of the classic 'guitar heros'. Old guy, old guy, dead guy, old guy. I think we're facing a time similar to pre-rock n roll where the old big band and jazzers started to fade away. That's a good point about big band guys. My dad was a jazzer big band wedding guy back in the 50s/ early 60s.. business was good up until the Beatles arrived. The shift was noticeable.. big band just wasn't cool anymore.
  13. EDM has taken over. It's the go to music for millennials. Guitar heroes are a thing of the past. And when you think about it, what else is there to innovate on the guitar? From Hendrix to VH to Vai to Malmsteen.. what haven't we seen?
  14. I'm beginning to get the feeling you don't believe in separating hard rock from metal, lol. They belong with each other, I agree. I hesitated with Killers, but I think metal is a branch of hard rock .. And TK listed Blackout in his original post, so I figured . . . If metal is excluded here, I'm gonna give this some more thought I've never understood the distinction, to be honest. Is there really a cognizable difference between Hell's Bells and Run to the HIlls? Between Unchained and You've Got Another Thing Coming? I think that speed is the issue for me. Maiden had a punk feel to them early on, whereas AC/DC was more bluesy. That what separates metal from hard rock, for me anyway. Also, lyrical themes. From that era.. Metal - Accept, Maiden , Priest Hard Rock- Van Halen, AC/DC, Ratt/Motley/ leopard
  15. Boston and Foreigner are the biggest frauds in the business. Absolute joke that Foreigner tours as " Foreigner" .. it's a tribute band at this point.
  16. Exactly how I feel. They've always been true to the music and don't have any albums that are embarrassing to their legacy.
  17. Solid enough for their most likely last album, but I don't think it's among their best, as some others rank it. I enjoy S&A more.
  18. Neil is the man. A real enigma among rock drummers. Well spoken, introverted.. he's a f***in bad ass for writing Ayn rand inspired lyrics in 1976.
  19. Awesome. Those pre debut album boots are just full of youthful energy.
  20. Sex machine.. https://www.google.com/amp/www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-4594692/amp/Batman-icon-Adam-West-led-secret-life-sex-booze.html
  21. Geddy is really the only one who still plays at a pretty high level. His singing is atrocious, but he still slays the bass. Alex seems to struggle a bit and Neil has lost a step or two imo.
  22. Jaws, Star Wars and ET are the definition of blockbuster.
