  3. While I definitely wouldn't say it sucked, I think the Time Machine Tour has been held in higher regard than what it deserved. I agree Moving Pictures in it's entirety was not anywhere near as bigger deal as it was made out to be at the time. Most of those songs had been played live on recent tours anyway (Camera Eye excepted of course!). Then including songs like Workin' Them Angels, Stick it Out and Faithless? I mean they're decent songs but c'mon, Rush can do so much better! That's why I much prefer the S&A and CA tours - far stronger and more inventive setlists I think.
  4. On a technical level Palmer is wayyyy above Peart (I really don't understand how some fail to comprehend that!) but I never cared for him much as a groove player. I think he was absolutely incredible in ELP, but put him in Asia and his playing just sounds... awkward to me. Just listen to the studio version of Heat of the Moment - his timing is all over the place. In fact I'm surprised that take even made the cut! Sorry if this sounds like a rant - it's just a little observation.
  5. I would definitely put Biffy Clyro's recently released Opposites up there as a strong contender here. A double album where every song is great - certainly not something that happens too often! Sounds very Rush influenced in places to my ears. Check out some samples of it here:

  10. Dude no offence but we are on the Rush forum in the section specifically about Rush. What do you expect the outcome to be?? Bit pointless to compare the two musicians here imo.
  11. I'd love to hear another Rush album with lots of synth. Remember that electronic music technology has come on leaps and bounds since the 80s with so many new styles of music since - e.g. house, trance, jungle, ambient, dubstep, etc. Just imagine the possibilities if Rush were to utilise that kind of technology now! I think it could be some of the most ground breaking stuff they've ever done. It's not as if the keyboards ever really got in way of Ged's bass playing - many Rush fans (myself being one of them) agree that his best bass riffs were written in the GUP-HYF synth period. For me it was when the band started to "strip down" try "going back to thier roots" after HYF, the quality of the songs began to suffer. I think they should have continued push the boundaries technology and genre-wise rather than back down like they did. It seems kind of ironic to me how Peart is still pushing things technology-wise when it comes to his solos but when it comes to the band as whole, they just don't seem to bother any more. Porcupine Tree and Muse are still doing it, so why not Rush?

Open Secrets, Second Nature, Prime Mover, Lock and Key, Turn the Page, Tai Shan (yes you heard correctly!) and High Water - I'd be very happy if they were to play any of these songs in the London show next year. Much as I love Force Ten and The Big Money, I think they have been overplayed on past tours and should make way for any of these other gems from that era. Who's with me!? :madra:
  13. I think possibly - but only if they took it a step or two down key-wise. Even then, Geddy would probably have to change the vocal melodies to accomodate his voice as it is now. That wouldn't bother me though as I think Anthem is far more memorable from an instrumental point of view than a vocal one. I'd also say the same about Bastille Day.
  14. What do think about YYZ as an opener? I personally think it would work great and would really get everyone pumped. In fact I'm quite surprised how overlooked this option seems to have been both from the band (obviously for never doing it) and on here too. So wada ya think?
  15. I love the synth era too - Rush's most underrated work for sure. Though I seem to be in the minority in saying that I'd take PoW and HYF over Signals and GUP any day. The song writing and use of synths is far more effective on the later 2 of the synth albums imo.

No one harps on Porcupine Tree for basically ripping off Pink Floyd in The Voyage. And while i'm ranting, may I add that pretty much EVERY Metal band has ripped off Tony Iommi? Everyone has ripped off Chuck Berry as well, most of all, AC/DC. I don't know man, there are points where it does sound dangerously close to being exact - just listen to the guitar riff in No More Monkey Business. I'm not saying Rush would necessarily sue them, just pointing out that the music is so ridiculously similar at times, they probably could if they chose to. Contrary to what you say, I always try to be as open minded as possible when it comes to discovering new music. But I really don't understand the point of what they are trying to accomplish here musically by using Rush's ideas in the way they are. I'd say the same for most people who rip of other artists without any real thought. And yes Steven Wilson is JUST as guilty on Voyage 34 if not more so - that riff is pretty much lifted straight out of Run Like Hell! One of the reasons why I find that to be one of Wilson's least inspired pieces of work. Fortunately, he hasn't stooped anywhere near that low since!

And though I understand why maybe some might consider the music to be a little cheesy (though to me it's part of the song's appeal), it's really nothing like as bad as many of the songs on Presto/ RTB albums. Just think of Superconductor, Face Up or You Bet Your Life. All that light weight pop-rock from those albums completely out-cheeses Tai Shan and everything else from the synth era albums imo. And not in a good way!
