  1. Youtube is your friend...
  2. Deep Purple's Ian Paice would be my number 1 in the best rock drummer category - perfect blend of chops and groove imo. Neil is awesome for Rush but I don't think he's a particularly adaptable player, even when playing with other rock bands. Not that I hold that against him though. I think in a lot of ways it just helps to make his identity as a musician stronger, along with the band's. He has a very set and personalised approach on the drums that (with the exception of his solos) really needs the context of Rush to function properly. It's sort of like Rush's music has become as bigger part of his playing as his playing has of the music. That's why I'd never consider him to be number 1 on a "greatest rock drummer list" because his style is so individual, along with the band that brought it on, it doesn't really fit the needs for most rock bands. I think Rush is one of the few bands that has managed to transcend any real genres or labels and it's things like this that show it.
  3. Is it wrong that I love this?? Haha I don't think so, I found myself getting pretty into it too! Minus the hilarious vocals, it reminds me quite a lot of Momentary Lapse of Reason era Floyd - especially the way the chorus sounds. Anyone else think that?
  4. Off the top of my head, I would have to say The Pass, Resist and Armor & Sword.
  5. Rush Finding My Way Fly By Night Anthem Caress of Steel Bastille Day 2112 2112 (Overture/ The Temples Of Syrinx/ Grand Finale) Tears A Farewell to Kings Xanadu Hemispheres La Villa Strangiato Permanent Waves The Spirit Of Radio Jacob's Ladder Moving Pictures Tom Sawyer YYZ Limelight Signals The Weapon Grace Under Pressure The Enemy Within Power Windows Marathon Hold Your Fire Open Secrets Presto Available Light Roll The Bones Ghost Of A Chance Counterparts Cut To The Chase Test For Echo Resist Vapor Trails Earthshine Snakes and Arrows Armor And Sword Clockwork Angels Clockwork Angels
  6. Yes out of those 3, I'd definitely go for Counterparts.
  7. Man I must admit I really missed some Rush through the late 80's and 90's. I didn't even have a chance to forget these. I have never heard of any of those and I think one of them was a Groucho Marx television show way back in the olden day's. Shame on me. Haha don't worry, I don't think you're missing out on much when it comes to these particular songs!
  8. Looking through some of their albums, I was surprised that there are actually quite a few songs that make into this catagory. Here's my top 5: Face Up Anagram (for Mongo) Bravest Face You Bet Your Life Carve Away The Stone
  9. 2nd that! Those are exactly who I voted for :)
  10. Hmm tricky one. I'd say... Losing It Cygnus X-1 Book II: Hemispheres One Little Victory A Passage to Bangkok Show Don't Tell That's not to say I dislike these songs by any means (except for Losing it, urrghh what a dirge of track - don't understand why anyone wanted it played on the CA tour). I just feel like they generally seem to get a little bit more praise round here than they deserve.
  11. Caress Of 2112 King Hemispheres 1. 2112 2. Bastille Day 3. Xanadu 4. La Villa Strangiato 45:53 So yes it's a little over but I see this appears to be ok. However if I was to follow the rules exactly, I would swap out Bastille Day for I Think I'm Going Bald - not because I particularly like it but because it's the only song on COS that would be short enough to accomodate the other songs. It's a sacrifice I would be willing to make!
  12. Signals Under Pressure Window Fire 1. Force Ten 2. Subdivisions 3. Manhattan Project 4. Between The Wheels 5. Open Secrets 6. Marathon 7. Mission 8. Mystic Rhythms As you can probably tell, I'm a big fan of the latter 2 albums (not that I dislike Signals and P/G by any means!). Don't want to blow my own trumpet but this album is frickin' musical perfection as far as I'm concerned :)
  13. So here's mine, entitled... Press The Bone Parts For Echo 1. Dreamline 2. Animate 3. Presto 4. Where's My Thing? (Part IV, "Gangster of Boats Trilogy") 5. The Pass 6. Bravado 7. Driven 8. Scars 9. Resist 10. Leave That Thing Alone 11. Available Light Interesting that out of the 4 albums, my favourite is definitely Counterparts and yet only 2 songs from it appear on this list as oppose to the 4 songs from Presto. That just goes to show how Counterparts really uses the consistency card to its full advantage - it's an album with lots of very good songs but nothing really outstanding imo. Presto however has imo 4 great songs (better than the highest points in Counterparts I think) but also some pretty bad ones by Rush's standard (though the production doesn't help things either), making it quite an inconsistent album. Two very different albums with very different strengths though for me overall, Counterparts is still superior.
  14. Happy birthday Hold Your Fire!! One of my favourite albums of all time :)
  15. Good song! But I really don't think there'll be any chance of them break out this one for a tour simply because of the lyrical content - it would just be too painful for Neil. Besides, I think there's still better songs on the album that deserve to be played live - Scars and Available Light come to mind immediately for me.
  16. And RTB, CP, T4E. When I think about it, these Rush albums deal with a theme, not necessarily a concept. I certainly think the first 3 of those albums come far closer to being concept albums than 2112 does (though not sure what the theme for Test for Echo is).
  17. Never understood why 2112 always get called a "concept album". Yes it has a big multi-part 20 minute piece but so does Hemispheres and is that a concept album? No. Is Caress of Steel a concept album? No. Is Close to the Edge a concept album? No. Then why is 2112 always incorrectly labelled as one?! How is A Passage to Bangkok even remotely related to anything else on the album? Who is responsible for these lies? Someone please explain! Arrrgh... :madra:
  18. I've said it before and I'll say it again, about time the keyboards were brought back in a major way I think. It would hardly be a regression to the 80s styalistically because music technology has come on so much since then - just imagine what they would be able to achieve now!
  19. Haha classic GeminiRising post right there!
  20. I think in a word: yes. 'Bout time the sythns were brought back imo - technology has moved so much since the 80s so imagine what they could do with it now! I really think Neil could go so much further with V-drum technology when it comes to studio work. I thought his electronic solo this tour was so great and him and the band could really capitalise on that kind of stuff. I mean they've been playing 5 songs from Power Windows this tour, so it seems likely it might at least have an influence on what they choose to do next!
  21. Wow this taster sounds amazing, the mix sounds class. R30 was the last great sounding dvd mix, ones in between just don sit right; Alex's guitars not up front and neils snare encroaching on the frequencies of others. This dvd release does seem very very special. Really?? I thought S@A Live sounded incredible - especially the drum sound which I thought was quite muddy on R30. But yes this new trailer does look very promising indeed!
  22. Alex: Moving Pictures Neil: Drums - Clockwork Angels Lyrics - Hold Your Fire Overall - Moving Pictures Geddy: Bass - Hold Your Fire Vocals - Moving Pictures Keyboards - Power Windows Overall - Hold Your Fire
  23. Not a fan of either of these songs really - I think they spoil an otherwise great album (ironically seems to be what most most people say about the last 2 tracks on HYF but I think they're great!). I totally agree with GeddysMullet that Losing It is a dirge of a song with pointlessly depressing lyrics. And do you really think the band would want to play a song dealing with that kind of subject matter live at this stage of their career? Hardly think so! Countdown is kind of meh for me - could take it or leave it. Kind of a shame as I think the rest of the album is superb! Each to their own I guess :)
