  1. I believe John McCain had the same or at least a variant of the same illness, and he fought it out in the limelight. He was lucid late in the disease's development.

Glioblastoma has about a 10% survival rate.

I don't care what the singer of Godsmack has to say, it doesn't change anything at this point.

Good points. I like Godsmack and don’t think Erna meant any harm. Hopefully he’ll apologize for spouting off something he evidently got off the rumor mill.

A member of another group I belong to (not Rush, it’s for nail polish fanatics, don’t ask!) suddenly disappeared from the boards where she had been one of the more active participants. It was odd that she vanished with no explanation, and one of the other members called her local police precinct for a wellness check. The cops found her semi-conscious and she’d been in a bad way for days. They got her to the hospital and she was diagnosed with glioblastoma multiforme. She never left the hospital. She got palliative care and radiation and lived about another month. Here was an advanced case but until she collapsed the symptoms were either not manifest or were too subtle for alarm until she crashed. The people from the board who did visit her reported that she was comfortable, surprisingly alert, and able to converse lucidly until about her last week.

  2. When anyone we have a longtime connection with dies, it’s often an uncomfortable reminder of our own mortality.

While none of us here actually knew Neil personally, there are so many who felt that connection through the music and Neil’s writing. For me it’s a reminder of youth that somehow seems not so distant; my first Rush show was p/g and it seems like yesterday. But in fact it was well over 30 years ago.

  3. I opened this thread thinking it was going to be one of those simpering "he's in a better place" platitudes too many people offer up (without having been asked) when someone dies. Thankfully it's not that!

I don't have any trouble ignoring the profiteering; I am rarely on eBay and then only to check saved searches.

  4. Why am I always surprised when the popularity of Rush is evident? Sort of like being Canadian, watching a sit-com and some reference of Canada is made and I react "Woo hoo!" Of course I know how popular Rush is, and around the world. I remember thinking about how the R40 Tour didn't stretch across the oceans and how many disappointed fans there would be. (But respectfully, they seemed to understand). I also searched for lyrics lately. My vinyl records are older albums and easier to read, everything after is CD and the jackets are too small to read (yes, soon I will have my first pair of reading glasses). I own every studio and most other albums, I enjoy selecting different albums for different days and moods :) Of course sales increased, surely they do after rock stars pass away. But to see the numbers above, and the numbers previous - way to go fellow Rushians! - it still surprised me. The radio plays so little, all of it is with friends and personal listening. But isn't it always so great?!! Well, then, a tiny sliver of goodness might be the increased revenue those invested can receive. (My "Enter Key" does not like these forums, text is always a block of text). Sadly...commerce leans its weight on the scale of circumstance...but with our beloved Trio, only goodness can come of it. It's their way :) Edit: I see thiz above already suggested a small silver lining. Goodness, two small silver linings? I can retract mine, because none of this feels good, just sad.

I don't think the sales uptick is from fellow Rushians - haven't we already bought every album by now? :)

Some people will be buying the remasters ( I have all albums but not necessarily the remasters) and/or the versions mastered specifically for iTunes.

  5. It snowed and I can't go skiing. :(

Am I missing something here? Granted, I haven't skied in forever (since getting a concussion on my second trip skiing), but isn't snow one of the essential elements of a successful ski venture? I think that's why there aren't any ski resorts in the Bahamas. (And here you all were thinking it was the hurricanes).

As for me - I've added another thing to my Shovel List. (The Shovel List, for those unfamiliar, is a list of things I hate so much I want to hit them repeatedly with a shovel until they cease to exist. The Shovel List is fluid; it can change daily or even hourly depending on my mood. I borrowed the term from an author whose main character was a spicy, sarcastic chick with a lengthy Shovel List herself).

New Shovel List item: "Self-care". I am way past done reading sappy references, hearing sound bites, etc., to this insipid new-agey concept.

shovel list. That’s a good one.

Shovel lists are sanity savers! You can put people, things, words, phrases....anything you dislike on the shovel list. Then imagine actually beating those things to a pulp with a shovel.

That is somewhat gratifying. Thanks for the tip.

    :ebert:

I am also fond of saying I don't believe in stuff I don't like. Vegetables? I don't believe in them. Purchase order requests? Vacuum cleaners? Rain hats? Ditto.

  6. Mick Jagger no talent?? Wow!

No Rolling Stones fan here (and goddamn, but good for Mick he has cash and charisma because he is one ugly mother. In my teens I referred to him as “Liver Lips”) but even I have to disagree with that assessment.

Replace Mick with Justin Bieber and you’ve got a dead bang on list of no-talents.

  7. We probably will hear more from Geddy and Alex, but I expect it’s going to be at least several months or more before they open up. I don’t have to remind anyone here that Neil was their close friend; as much as we’re hurting, they are undoubtedly reeling. It will take some time before they’re ready to really talk.

And too, they are also mindful that Neil has a wife and daughter, not to mention both parents, plus a brother and a sister who have suffered a devastating loss in the worst possible way. I am certain Alex and Geddy want to hold off for awhile out of respect for the immediate family.

  8. Bumping because I love to bake! It's funny, though, I don't eat much of what I bake. If it's cake, I might have a slice or two and then my SO gets tasked with finishing the rest. I made a German chocolate cake recently, which is his favorite. Half of it went in the freezer. He commented that I hadn't eaten any, not knowing that I actually hate German chocolate cake. It's the coconut and pecan filling - too much stuff and I really, really do not like nuts. But it was an enormous cake, three layers with the trademark filling and then chocolate frosting. He loved it, asked me to make one to take when we visit his family in a couple of months, but it was too much for one guy!

Cookies I can eat a few more of; I made peanut butter blossoms for Christmas gifts (those are the cookies with the Hershey's Kisses stuck in the center). 8 dozen total and we didn't give any away, sorrynotsorry.

I think I went through 5 lbs of butter in December and maybe 2 dozen eggs. Always unsalted, because most recipes call for salt and no, I do not go for salted sweet anything. I can taste the damn salt and it ruins it for me. I'm with thesweetscience's wife on altering sugar ratios, though. Unless I am trying a new recipe, I always sub in brown sugar for about half of the white stuff.

  9. Oh I’ll definitely be buying used. New car smell is nice and all, but it doesn’t last. Plus the Hellcat starts at around $72K. My budget is about $50K, possibly stretching to 60. I need to offload my house first though.

Good luck Mara. I will admit that a Hellcat fits you like a glove.

Thanks! Maybe I'll zip up to Summerville and give you a spin!

  10. It's easy to see who Neil's real friends were. The people trying to show that they knew the most are just looking for attention.

I think Doane Perry would be the exception. He was most definitely a close friend of Neil's and I think he posted what he did to reassure the legions of fans that Neil didn't spend the last 3-1/2 years of his life in unimaginable physical pain. I appreciate Doane's insight for what it is, and I don't think he could be lumped in with the rest of the attention whores.

  11. He just saying what happened, from his point of view. I’d have an issue if he was lying, but he seems to be telling the truth, as awful as it is.

We have to consider the context of this interview. I don’t think he’s being disrespectful and it’s hard to see the line between what is heartfelt and what is publicity for a new album. These guys are musicians - they gotta promote.

I am not going to read this, I already heard enough about it from some other folks. I think the guy is just classless and a jerk. Let him get his promos another way. Why can't they just leave it be? :rage:

Exactly! He and b..mouth are getting, and rightly so, lambasted in the comment section of that article article

    "B....mouth" would be...who?

Blabbermouth. The music news site that posted the story.

Ah. For a moment I thought - surely not Bill Banasciewicz (or however the f**k he spells it)!!!

  13. Not sure what price range you're in but. Mustang GT 500. 760hp. What about a vette?

Corvettes have just never turned my head; I don't know why. A previous employer had one and I got to drive it quite a bit. It was fun, and as a 20-something blonde I did get some looks! I think the new mid-engine ones have a bad case of fugly.

One thing I do like about the Challenger is that is has a pretty roomy trunk. I don't need much of a back seat since I have no kids, but trying to wrestle grocery bags or similar in and out of the back seat of a coupe would get old fast.

  14. Go British....get a TVR Chimera...it'll put hairs on yer chest.

And holes in my bank account! British cars are, uh, not generally regarded as paragons of mechanical reliability. Every time I see someone in a Land Rover I think to myself, "well, there's someone with more money than brains."

Interesting as over here American cars are regarded as a bit of a joke with regard to build quality and reliability.....

Interesting....American car manufacturers are mainly concerned with the North American market, which could explain less than stellar reviews from the overseas consumers. Possibly the same holds true for UK car companies - the citizenry gets the good stuff and everyone else is stuck with the afterthoughts!

Of course my favorite car is British....I love the Jaguar sport coupes. But I have known a few people who've owned them, and there was a lot of complaining about the amount of time the car spent in the mechanic's shop.

Are the Challenger, Mustang, and Camaro even available to UK buyers?

  17. All of them are Trooper bait!

I like the looks of the Hellcat the best. Actually have a friend that has a pair of them from 2018. His and hers. One is lime green the other is red. Both of them have gotten tickets!

Looks are what drew me to the Challenger in the first place!

Rocket ship, lol, I know! I've had nothing but 4 cylinders all my driving life, so I know it's going to take some practice in the high school parking lot (not during school hours, naturally) to get used to a car that goes 0-60 when you breathe on the accelerator. I do have a heavy foot, though I have never had a speeding ticket. Actually I have had very few tickets at all.

One factor I have yet to consider is insurance - I have yet to look up rates for "fifty-one year old female, clean driving record, rocket-propelled land grenade".
