  3. Anything "in ear" will make you deaf.

Do yourself a favor...and get headphones that will not kill you.

Like the Sony Professional line or something.

Just think....Why would anyone want to jam something in their ear that is centimeters away from their ear drum!? Because society tells you it's cool and "In Ear" are the main market for headphones.

You're a musician are you not? Isn't that the game? To try and perserve your hearing?

I'm 20, and a musician and I go to school at Harris (music school) in Toronto...and so far I've been getting lectures after lectures on hearing loss. "In ear" is the biggest culprit to deafness besides "deaf sound engineers".

These are cheaper than your 'in ears'...believe it or not.

Sorry about the rant. but people just don't understand how they are killing their hearing over such a little thing!

Plus those bose headphones look like they are going to break! anything with wiring that thin will surely short out within months...the Sony Professional ones are only like $150....so your getting STUDIO quality sound for 50 bucks more...and they are sturdy as hell.

  5. I can't believe there is no thread about silent films!

and first of all silent films weren't really silent...because you always had a live band play for you and whatnot. Silent films made the audience think more, because without moronic dialog you had to figure out what was going on in each scene. You paid more attention to people's facial expressions and so on. Sound (other than music) ruined film imo. They put in so many add lines in films it's incredible...they are basically doing this because they think we are stupid.

    here's some history...

First silent film was the "sneeze" ....shot by one of Thomas Edison's workers. You guessed it. Him sneezing in 5 seconds.

The Arrival of the Mail Train- arrival of the mail train -When this film first came out...people had no idea how to handle the fact that the train looked like it was going to go through the screen. Many people during the film would actually RUN to the back of the room because they thought the train was coming right for them. This also happened at the end of the short film " The Great train Robbery"

where the guy with the gun shoots "at" the audience.

The mail train...was pretty much the first silent film

My fav short film is "He who gets slapped" this was the first movie to show the roaring lion in the beginning of the movie! John Gillbert was in this film, and he's brilliant. You can watch the entire film here: http://video.google.ca/videoplay?docid=576...earch&plindex=0

Anyone else here a fan of silent films?

    Way to go Alison! biggrin.gif

I'm looking to get a new camera myself, do you have any recomendations?

    oh man. depends.

I know a shitload about Nikon...I don't know anything about Canon...Barney is a good guy to talk to about Canon cameras.

But for Nikon...for a starter camera...those D40's are kick ass! D80's for medium/intermediate (if you have played with SLR's before) and I have the D200 (which is the D300 now) for a more professional look...

I only know a lot about SLR's...point and shoot cameras...I figure....you get what you pay for.

my camera was $1800. I would seriously get a D40 or D80 and then save money on different lenses!! Thats the way to go!

Yeah depends on your budget, personally I prefer older "retro" equipment. Nothin' beats analog recording equipment.

    haha

yeah except the $200-300 will stiff you for the tape!

    I agree tho!

I have a Otari 2 track reel to reel sitting in my room. Can't do shit with it until I find some tape....and of course $$$ for the tape! laugh.gif

I just need to find some good monitor speakers now.  I know nothing about brands...I've heard of Yorkville...they seem pretty good.  I just need something to get me by...I don't want to say "cheap"...but something thats low in price...but still good quality. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

    smile.gif

D, just use your home stereo to monitor your recordings for now. Studio monitors are expensive (for quality ones) and the cheap ones are no better than good home stereo speakers. Unless of course you have $800+ to blow on speakers right now. Then you still need to power them.

Spend your money on a great mic preamp and a great microphone.

ok cool! Yeah I was thinking about that.

I have my dad's older stereo system (they are Hitatchi, and apparently from what people told him, they used these for recording).

    Thanks for the tips man!
