  1. QUOTE (Earthshine @ May 16 2008, 03:35 PM) There was a story going around years ago that Neil was spotted in the Santa Monica Mountains with someone (probably Carrie) and this person said, "um I don't want to bother you but aren't you...?", to which Neil interrupted and said "If you don't want to bother me, then why are you bothering me?" Enough said. Neil's got a point.
  2. QUOTE (JDL2112 @ May 16 2008, 09:53 AM) QUOTE (wrekinboy @ May 16 2008, 02:56 AM) If one wanted to get a response from Neil then the last thing they should say is "Hi Neil". Immediately he knows that as this person is someone he had never seen before then they must have recognised him from Rush and he goes on the defensive, as it could be an annoying fan with requests for pictures, inane conversation etc. However if they just treated him as a human being and said something like "Great show huh?" or "Can I get a light?" then there is much more chance of an interaction. Still may not work but at least it is not intimidating. You bring up an excellent point...and from an experience I had once, it's just about right on the money! Several years back when Page and Plant made "No Quarter", they were on Rockline or some national show, and I was fortunate enough to actually get through on the 800 number and was screened for what I was going to ask/say/talk about. The last 15 callers all said the same thing..."You guys are the greatest...do you think you will ever put the 3 members together and tour as Zeppelin again...Jimmy you are the best guitarist ever....how long did it take you to make Dazed and Confused...." One rambling Zeppelin question after another and you could tell they were just sick of it and the calls lasted...45 seconds. I had noticed that during the interview, they were speaking of the new music they made on No Quarter...with the Middle Eastern sounds and how they were inspired by that sound. I had been to an Egyptian shop in New York about 2 years before that, and thought I'd let them know about it. I got on the phone, and said hello...they both said "Hey...how's it going" "Hey, have you guys ever been to The Clover Trading Company in New York? (I can't remember the exact name, but I believe that's it) They have some really great Egyptian items...etc etc" I proceeded to have a 10 minute conversation with Jimmy Page and Robert Plant and they seemed like they were all over this conversation and just talked and talked away about the influences on the album, and asking me questions about the shop and other places I may have seen. After I hung up, I remember thinking "Well, I just spent 10 minutes talking to a couple of rock legends, and they appeared to have been in to it". For me, what we talked about was really interesting and I don't believe they thought I was some crazed fan. The fact that I was listening to the show probably told them I was a fan. That was a very long winded story, but at the end of it, I believe you are right. Perhaps if I ever saw Neil just standing around looking bored, and wanted to talk to him, I'd talk about motorcycles or something...anything BUT Rush and try to refrain from saying "You are the very best". You make a good point JDL2112. Lose the, "you're the greatest drummer", "I can't believe I'm talking to you", and "I'm such a big fan". This kinds of questions go right over there heads. Ask a heartfelt question about anything else interesting other than the band, and you might get more than a few minutes.
  3. QUOTE (subdivider79 @ May 15 2008, 01:57 PM) QUOTE (hope70 @ May 15 2008, 01:54 PM) Neil owes nothing to anyone. The man likes his privacy and I can't blame him. Also, you're either a people's person or you're not. He could stand up and bow to the crowd that adores him... Bow? A hand up in the air, which is what he does, is fine.

  5. QUOTE (rushfr:CP @ May 15 2008, 12:06 PM) thought i made it very clear with a couple of other posts.. but since that didnt work i will remove everything but the vid. is that better??? Reading your post, I got the impression that you were there. So you're ranting for a guy who got the cold shoulder from Neil and threw a hissy fit?
  6. QUOTE (1-0-0-1-0-0-1 @ May 15 2008, 11:31 AM) QUOTE (Smudger @ May 15 2008, 12:26 PM) Politeness costs nothing Mr Peart. When this chap said "How's it going Neil" all you need have done is say "Fine, now I'm just a bit busy, but nice to see you" then move on. It takes up two seconds of your time and leaves a happy punter. Having said that, this fellow should never have said "Hey Neil" before that, that sounds a bit rude. One thing's for sure, being a "Gobby cow" as hubby puts it, should I ever see Neil out in the wild, I;m going to go and talk at him, whether he says anything back or not See, I'd do the opposite. Knowing how he is, I'd completely ignore him out of respect. I see no reason to bust the guy's balls when I KNOW he won't talk to a stranger like me. I would do the same. We all know of the guy's personalities from what we read and also the shows we attend. Someone who doesn't understand Neil, I can see getting pissed. Me, I wouldn't blink an eye. The guy's been through a world of sh*t. Stop the bitching please.
  7. One of my absolute favs on VT.
  8. QUOTE (Fridge @ Mar 16 2008, 04:51 PM) QUOTE (circumstantial tree @ Mar 16 2008, 09:38 PM) QUOTE (Presto-digitation @ Mar 16 2008, 05:32 PM) I like this song and UNFORTUNATELY I have some skippin' going on on my disc. No, I like this song. Freeze is probably my least favorite. I at least like every song on VT and either really like or love most of them.... Freeze is among my favorites on VT. And if you don't like it you're not a true Rush fan. It's one of the most embarrassingle ill-conceived tracks i have ever had the misfortune to hear. Serious malfunction in the Quality Control department there I think Carlos, is that you again?

  10. QUOTE (TheRocinanteKid @ Mar 15 2008, 02:02 PM) For me Out Of The Cradle is the weakest song on Vapor Trails just as Carve Away The Stone is the weakest song on Test For Echo. Did Rush see it that way? I doubt it! Finishing an album with the weakest song is a sure fire way to get bad reviews, it leaves a bad taste in the mouth of the listener and is much more likely to leave them a negative state of mind about the record. That said I do enjoy both Out Of The Cradle and Carve Away The Stone I just think they're clear weak links on their respective albums. I enjoy Out of the cradle, but Carve away the stone is another story.
  11. QUOTE (Rushman14 @ Mar 21 2007, 12:52 PM) Much to my surprise, many people have listed "Out Of The Cradle" as they're least favorite of Vapor Trails. I'm a bit shocked as it is tied with Secret Touch as my favorite, especially the end fadout section when Neil is going off with those killer drum fills. It's a great album closer and makes the hair on the back of neck stand up. Speak up "Out Of The Cradle" fans! Yup, one of my favs also.
  12. QUOTE (Noisy Bastard @ Mar 10 2008, 10:59 AM) I have read that Billy Joel is a big Rush fan. And I saw Jamie Foxx on "Inside The Actor's Studio", with James Lipton, and he mentioned he got turned on to Rush by his college roommate, and became a big fan. And here's a link to a previous similar thread: http://www.therushforum.com/index.php?show...=13500&st=0&hl= It has some other famous fans listed in it. Billy Joel?? Are you serious?

  14. QUOTE (Maestro @ Feb 24 2008, 11:03 AM) QUOTE (Cygnusx3 @ Feb 23 2008, 10:00 PM) We _____ the _____and ______ of restless _______ from afar That would be: "We feel the push and pull of restless rhythms from afar." How 'bout: _____ is _____ a _______ and ___ ____ must ____ __ _____.
  15. QUOTE (Choose/the/light @ Feb 23 2008, 03:37 PM) QUOTE (Territorial_Game @ Feb 23 2008, 11:56 AM) Another one that gets me: This particular part of Presto "I had a dream of a winter garden a midnight rendezvous silver, blue, and frozen silence what a fool I was for you I had a dream of the open water I was swimming away out to sea so deep I could never touch bottom what a fool I used to be if I could wave my magic wand I'd set everybody free" Great lyrics, I don't see why so many people dislike that song I didn't know there was any hate towards this song. It's definitely overlooked, but one of my favs.
  16. QUOTE (-D-RocK- @ Feb 18 2008, 01:03 PM) Listen up you all you Neil bashers: You no NOTHING of the man. At the very least you all should be greatful that he has shared his incredible talent and poured his heart and soul into his work for the last 30+ years. If you've nothing good to say, then save yourself some typing and do the rest of us a favor by shutting the f**k up. To come on here and bitch and complain because you didn't get a hand shake or a smile makes YOU the complainer look like a JACKASS. Pathetic ungreatful whiney little rats. agreed. Neil bashers, stop worrying less about Neil and more about yourself.
  17. Hey your either a people person or your not. I understand where he's coming from and respect his privacy.
  18. The guy is a professional in every way and doesn't like to get caught up in all the hoopla. I respect that. Just keep making albums.
  19. QUOTE (Tom C @ Feb 17 2008, 05:00 PM) QUOTE (Sign Of Eth @ Feb 17 2008, 04:29 PM) I don't agree that he treats us fans like "garbage." I do. He tried to hide from me when I was stalking him in a restaurant on a ferry. It doesn't bother me either. As a person Neil is quite garbage, but he happens to play drums quite well. How many of us are really good people??? I think many of us would probably act the same way if we were in Neil's shoes. He's someone who values his privacy and we should respect that. I can't blame him. There are fans that just don't no when to quit and become quite annoying.
  20. Welcome aboard! I guess when you've been touring for so long and spending all that time away from home, you tend to not enjoy it as much. I really think there next tour is going to be very small.
