  1. My original vinyl copy of FBN didn't have the sheet with the lyrics. I couldn't work out what Geddy was singing on the "won't let good times pass me by" part. With my guitar strapped me-by? Pardon? I love that song, they played it as a last encore at my first Rush gig. Happy days.
  2. Does <insert spouse name here> ever talk about the UK tours in the '70s?
  3. I'm sure Alex claimed LVS was done in one take, or at least recorded as a single take, in an interview years ago. Probably just forgot.
  4. Well Neil tells us fairly clearly that it was edited together from three takes Then, gradually reversing direction, I began to embrace editing. One early lesson was in 1978, recording our Hemispheres album. The last song was a crazy eight-minute instrumental, "La Villa Strangiato," and we played it over and over - for about four days, I recall. The three of us were in the studio together grinding it out, over and over, sometimes until daylight, only to start again later that day, with aching, swollen hands. It was soul-destroying. Finally, Terry Brown tried editing together three takes into one, it sounded great, and I had to cry, "Uncle."
  5. Glad to see T4E getting some love. Although it has a few stinkers, it's the only Rush album I like between Presto and Clockwork Angels.
  6. There's an occasionally-repeated view that La Villa Strangiato was recorded in one take .. interesting to hear the truth about that.
  7. Hello. It's Christmas Day yet again; a time for most of us to reflect on the successes and sadnesses of the passing year, and take respite from the trials and tribulations that may appear in our lives, in the comfort of our families. As Rush fans, we are also members of a family of a sort - a global brother-and-sister-hood with a common cherished interest. And my goodness, we're a diverse lot, aren't we? Drawn from a plethora of ages and backgrounds, a few of you urbane and charming like me, others not so much. I type now from my home and from my heart to you all. We have not had so much to celebrate this last twelve months - no tour or new album - and yet perhaps that's cause for celebration after all, for we can still say that the most recent album was rather creditable. Who knows how long we shall be afforded that privilege? Yet while our band's activities may be at a low ebb, the ties that bind us are still strong - as evidenced by the discussion and camaraderie for which fora like this are such an excellent medium. In the end, we are all human beings - and we must remember that what we have in common is stronger than what may divide us. Electronic communications make it possible for me to type to you in your homes and to send you my good wishes with ease. The medium by which I convey my sentiment to you is modern, but the spirit of goodwill is timeless. As each Christmas comes and goes, I confess I become a little more keenly aware of my mortality. The music of Rush is of course more about the past than the present, as indeed has been the case since the early '80s - and one day soon, it will all be over. But when it is, we'll have the music and the memories - and equally importantly, the spirit of friendship and love among Rush fans will also remain. A very Merry Christmas to you all.
  8. Certainly the band's finest live album and for me, their best album full stop. Sounds fantastic, the selection of material is superb, and it has a peerless energy and drama. This album is of course home to the definitive version of 2112, the band's signature piece.

No. Back then he didn't really do anything that Jimmy Page hadn't done already.
  10. It can only be 2112. The band's signature piece.
  11. Clockwork Angels amazed me, I must say. Comfortably the strongest Rush album for over two decades. Have to respect the right of the OP to express his opinion though - it's a sure sign of an insecure person to label an opinion he or she doesn't like as being that of a troll, just because he or she can't deal with it. Vapor Trails and Snakes & Arrows still suck mightily, and they always will. Two of the worst records I've ever heard in my life. That's just a sincere opinion.
  12. Tired of it? It was a loathsome, ugly, hollow mess the first time I heard it, and it was a a loathsome, ugly, pointless mess the last time I heard it. Being tired of it doesn't come into it.
  13. QUOTE (GeminiRising79 @ Apr 6 2012, 08:28 AM) I can't recall one popular rock group who's been able to release a "twilight"album that hasn't been the embodiment of crap. From what I've heard thus far, despite my criticisms, my excitement is, surprisingly, becoming aroused. Can this be the album I've been pineing for, for over a decade? I always approach a new Rush album with an open mind. But it's been a long, long time since thye came up with something worth the materials it was made out of and I think it very unlikely that the new album will be worthwhile. I expect it to be just as bad as the last two, but as always am ready to be pleasantly surprised.
  14. He's a sensational guitar player. That actually makes more sense of Tom Sawyer than the original does, for me. I've never liked that tune much - it sounds too disjointed and stop / start. But Igor makes it coherent .. in all the times I've heard Tom Sawyer since 1981, I've never liked it so much as I did when I played that YouTube video. I watched Rush perform it from the front row a week ago. This was better.

  16. Well - I saw Rush in Newcastle in 1977, but I still haven't seen any photos of that gig. Sorry for the massive fail in the first post. I'll fix it.

QUOTE (Tony R @ May 30 2011, 06:17 PM) Your confessions of gheyness bring shame upon CP Messageboard. Well - it was the '70s. I was a mere slip of a lad. It was my first gig. Cut me a bit of slack.

QUOTE (phlaaps @ May 27 2011, 02:38 PM) During the performance of La Villa in Dublin, I shed a tear. There, I said it and I feel great. A grown man crying in public. f**k you. This is the 21st century and a real man can cry if he wants! Anyone else had any wee teary moments at a show.....or for that matter while chopping carrots in the kitchen listening to Rush Radio? Come on, admit it. Honesty costs you nothing. During Alex' arpeggio part in the Soliloquy part of 2112 the first time I saw the band, I did shed a tear, yes. But I was 16 at the time.

  21. I like the string scrape in Twilight Zone, in the guitar solo. Tres atmospheric.

  23. QUOTE (Uncle @ Jan 31 2005, 08:47 PM) Look mate! your going round in circles. Either you think there is an absolute form of good taste or you don't please decide. You keep contradicting yourself. No, I haven't contradicted myself at all. Personal taste plays a large part in the appreciation of music, of course - but there are also certain absolute elements with respect to art of any kind which it is perverse to deny the existence of. You can argue away notions of 'good' and 'bad' with semantics, but ultimately that's not really credible in the real world. We don't have a nice objective, universal measure, of course, but nonetheless we do measure the worth of any piece of music when we listen to it, even if we can't express its value in precisely quantified terms we might all agree on. It often makes me laugh that 'good' and 'bad', or 'strong' and 'weak' records or songs, or bands or whatever are fair game until someone comes across an opinion they dislike, when they play the tired old 'personal taste' card.
