Nice outfit, is that comfortable for cycling?
Let's just say the airflow is.... ahhhhhhhhhh titilating.

So thanks for talking to us today. What qualifies you to speak to what genre of music Rush would fall into?
My pleasure. I have a PhD in Music History from Yale University. Also my older brother started getting me into Rush when I was 12. It all started with Exit Stage Left...

So as a scholar, what do you answer when people ask you "are Rush heavy metal?".
Well first off Anthem, Cygnus X1 and 2112 are obviously country songs right? Joking! Rush has obviously had a long and storied musical career and have progressed wildly over the past four decades. Certainly, especially in the first half of their career they would strongly be considered heavy metal and then progressive metal. As a matter of fact several of my colleagues have researched and presented such facts in a myriad of books and documentaries. Do people still read?

So what do you say to those that insist that Rush is not metal?
Maybe these people were born in the 90s and have limited exposure to genres of music? With all the kids nowadays listening to rap influenced mallcore , it might be very hard to grasp what was considered metal back in the late '60s and early '70s, when heavy metal was truly born. The next generation will probably argue that Black Sabbath and Slayer are not metal, just because they never set off atomic weaponry at concerts and didn't shoot dead babies out of cannons like future bands will probably do. Kids nowadays...

Tell us something about yourself that not many people know.
I may seem very confident but I have a couple weird phobias actually. I always feel like someone is following me and I am also terrified of large reptiles.

    Favorite Rush experience?
Ask me again in 11 minutes. Let's head to your car and listen to The Garden first. Rowwwr.

    Woohoo!

Hey, is that Godzilla humping a building behind her?

Huh?! Godzilla? WTF are you talking about Willis?!

You are really doing it for us? I'm pretty sure there is a name for that in some sort of psychiatric journal.

    cool10.gif

    Yes, its called "empathy"

    Hahaha!

As I said I am sure there is a name for it, but I'm sure it leans toward some form of delusion, and certainly not empathy.

Seriously TD - how can you manage to frump up such a simple poll? The answer is clearly

    I shit you not!

    cool10.gif

Who could you even argue would be ranked higher than Rush in the rock/metal genre?

The Stones? The Beatles? Possibly U2?

Anything less than that is tough to argue and that includes Kiss, Zeppelin, Aeroshit, Queen, Chili Peppers, Maiden...

Nobody else has the breadth of work and the same consistent aroma of excellence.

  4. Sorry goober, but I find this borders on non-nonsensical.

A Garden can be a metaphor for a million and one things, clearly in this case has nothing to do with Eden.

On the contrary probably alludes to an ending... nature, peace and simplicity away from the throes of technology, conflict, adventure and change.

It is the peaceful, reflective end of things. Death or retirement whatever, the end of time.

Not one single element here in any way crosses with the nature of the Garden of Eden...

  5. Gemini - starting this month, rd.io has a one week free trial offer, all you need is any old email address to sign up, it's awesome they have so much music, millions upon millions of tracks, it is almost impossible to "stump them" with obscure stuff!

    http://www.rdio.com/

Anyways, go sign up for a free trial, and then do a "search by band" and look for "Strapping Young Lad". On the results page find the song "You F**king Suck" and listen to that!

Sanzo...have you sobered up from Dublin and Glasgow yet??

Yeah Sanzo! And have you found your camera yet? I want to see some of those pictures from the bars we hit!

Think Sanzo even remembers us or actually being there?

Doubt it! Probably found his camera two weeks later, looked at all these pictures of us and thought "who the f**k are these male supermodels I was hanging out with at all this different bars? WTF!"

Seriously, how old are the majority of guys on this forum? It's just a never ending onslaught of girl photos in peoples sigs. I think the female members would be more comfortable too, if they were absent.

If I need to see chicks, I can go to google images.

    Girly pics...

    Pseudo politcal-religious stuff...

Then you got the My Little Ponies contingent...

Just gotta roll with it or turn off sigs like you did. Nothing bad or surprising to see here.

  9. QUOTE (GeminiRising79 @ Jul 9 2012, 04:48 PM)
It has nothing to do with being cheap. Its the principal. I refuse to buy the CD unless I first find it worthy of being bought, period. Why should I financially support Rush if I feel the album is a half-effort on the part of the members of Rush? The recording quality is another issue. From what I've heard thus far, CA is easily at the bottom of the Rush catalog.

    ROFL. Go take your meds.

    You pay to play.

If I can show you any sign of consolation or kidness I will say that outside the instrumentals and maybe two other tracks on Snakes & Arrows I was not a fan of most of the rest.

Clockwork Angels is far superior. You'd probably like it.

    Now go. $12 well spent.

Neil asked me what two songs I want to hear the most. I requested Xanadu + The Garden. He usually adheres to my requests, including Time Stand Still last tour!

We can't go through the tears of Time stand still again can we????

No. This time it will be "The Garden of Eternal Sobbing".

  11. This band is such shit that it's kind of addictive actually.

If they prefaced this music with "we are enormous Rush fans who are not very good musically but love to try and mash Rush riffs together" then maybe I could learn to accept it. Maybe.
