  1. QUOTE (Tombstone Mountain @ Jul 25 2012, 12:47 PM) QUOTE (rushgoober @ Jul 23 2012, 09:47 AM) Several times I've wanted to take on this thread and give a numerical rating to the songs. I keep coming to the same difficulty, which is that I have to take Rush's entire career into consideration when doing so. For example, songs like Xanadu, La Villa, Tom Sawyer, Subdivisions and SO many other are solid 10's. I absolutely love Clockwork Angels and The Garden and so many other songs on this album, but are they in that category? Do I give them 10's just because I think they're amazing songs, or do I give them 9's because they're not quite at the level of Xanadu? In reality, however, Xanadu would be like a 15 out of 10, so surely some of the new songs could rate at least a 10. It almost seems as if 1-10 isn't enough of a rating system. If I gave The Garden a 10 it says it's as good as Xanadu, but to rate it a 9 or 9.5 doesn't seem fair either. I have to look at all of it in a greater perspective, and I'm not sure I'm ready to do that yet - it's all still so new. I could rate the songs against each other on the album only. For example, the best songs would get a 10 regardless of Rush's history. I know many would think I'm way overthinking this, and I'm sure they're right, but I think about these things when giving rankings - I don't do it lightly. Anyway, still thinking about if and how I could rank these songs 1-10... screw the slide rule shit--the heart knows reason that reason knows not. Overthinking the thing Goobs. I did like your ratings though Goober, use finer decimal ratings....like Xanadu can be a 9.9 and Garden can be 9.1.....if that helps

Nice attention grab. I'm still waiting for Trenken and Gemini to weigh in with theirs: Caravan 0/10 BU2B 0/10 Clockwork Angels 0/10 The Anarchist 0/10 Carnies 0/10 Halo Effect 0/10 Seven Cities Of Gold 0/10 The Wreckers 0/10 Headlong Flight 0/10 BU2B2 0/10 Wish Them Well 0/10 The Garden 0/10 Why do you care how other people perceive or enjoy an album. The fact that you like it should be enough. Other posts that say "I'm glad you like "it"" are equally perplexing. eg: QUOTE Seriously, I'm glad you're liking it so much. trink39.gif CA really is amazingly consistent, as seen in your ratings. I hope Seven Cities grows on you. I know you like the debut, and for me Seven Cities really sounds like a modern take on What You're Doing or Working Man (Zeppelin-ish blues rock). It's become one of my top 2-3 tracks on the album. 1022.gif Why should you wish that a track grows on someone? You didnt write it and it shouldn't change your enjoyment whether they do or they don't. Obviously we're all interested in what other fans think about CA, or we wouldn't check out this forum. I'm still tying to figure out why YOU'RE here, though. If CA earns a 3/10 for you but is their best since Signals, obviously everything Rush has done for thirty years has been shit for you. So why are you still here with 4800+ posts after thirty years of dissapointment? After three freaking decades, I think I would move on. EDIT: Just saw your review on Prog Archives, and I'm completely confused. How do you give CA a five star rating given your ratings above? Because of people like you! Stop over-reacting to what other people think and feel about music. Stop being a sheep. I have to admit that I'm completely puzzled as well. How do you give the album a 3/10 average when rating it per song, but then give it a 5 out of 5 star review? The math doesn't add up. Someone hijacked Tony's account at Prog archives.
  3. QUOTE (clintonb @ Jul 25 2012, 06:03 PM) I've probably listened to Clockwork Angels about 30 times now. I think I've only managed to listen to the entire Snakes & Arrows album only once. I like Far Cry and the instrumentals, but with the other songs I usually end up clicking to the next track before they finish. It usually takes me a couple listens to get into a new Rush album, but no matter how much I listen to Snakes & Arrows, it never grows on me. Ditto for Vapor Trails and Test for Echo. After the last three albums, I had pretty much given up on Rush, so I was pleasantly surprised by Clockwork Angels. I'm actually looking forward to their next album which isn't something I could say for a long time. A good feeling, isnt it?
  4. QUOTE (An Enemy Without @ Jul 24 2012, 11:14 AM) QUOTE (rushgoober @ Jul 24 2012, 10:53 AM) QUOTE (An Enemy Without @ Jul 24 2012, 08:37 AM) The story doesn't really interest me compared to other great concept albums. Context didn't really do much. I think it has something with not being able to understand Geddy without reading the lyrics. That doesn't make any sense to me with this song in particular. I remember when the song was released prior to the album and we were able to decipher almost all of the lyrics pretty quickly. Other songs on the album are harder to get without the liner notes... but that's often been the case with Rush for a long time. But even if you get the lyrics to HF, it doesn't really matter for context if you don't understand the context. What's there not to understand?

The lyrics to this song are quite comprehensible without reading them no doubt. Complaining about understanding Geddy in parts on CA is nothing new. There are quite a few classic Rush songs where it's hard to understand Geddy.
  6. QUOTE (Tony R @ Jul 24 2012, 08:38 AM) QUOTE (Gompers @ Jul 24 2012, 02:34 PM) QUOTE (Tony R @ Jul 24 2012, 09:21 AM) QUOTE (Gompers @ Jul 24 2012, 01:24 PM) I already submitted a review and a rating of 4 stars. Waiting to see Tick's review. Wait until you see mine.... http://www.progarchives.com/Review.asp?id=792040 Is that really you, Tony?? Reveal yourself, imposter!
  7. QUOTE (Mika @ Jul 23 2012, 05:30 PM) Thanks for compiling so many reviews, Tombstone! It's interesting to hear what the critics (or not-so-critics) say about CA. And when you're done this thread, you can swing back to the past and post reviews about the previous albums! Amen to that! You rock, Duff!!
  8. QUOTE (CygnusGal @ Jul 23 2012, 08:41 PM) I keep loving the album with each spin and find all of songs exceptionally well crafted (yes, even the much maligned BU2B2...lots of love from this camp). I believe the album is magnificent, certainly their strongest effort since Moving Pictures though I am still waiting for the honeymoon to wear off and won't truly know until this time next year when the NA tour is over and I replay the album to see how it holds up. I think it will do very, very well over time. Loving all of it. Agree word for word with you, except that I think it's their strongest since Signals. But, aren't you glad that you're loving it so much? Would suck to have to wait for so long for a Rush album only to be disappointed. Glad I'm not one of them! Yeah, hopefully it holds up well over time and like you, I predict it will!
  9. QUOTE (Syrinx Priest @ Jul 23 2012, 07:50 PM) In the minority here but I do not think it is close. S&A is close to a top 5 album and CA is close the bottom - I keep listening to it over and over and it just doesn't do it for me. Moving Pictures is the first album I bought as a "new release" and Snakes and Arrows is the only one I felt remotely as excited as that when I first listened. It's what makes Rush so fascinating.....such varied opinions for different albums, and truly shows how diverse their music really is. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
  10. When HF released as a single a month or two before the full album, I remember reading a lot of criticism about it here and elsewhere. Now that we hear the song in the full album context, it seems to have gathered higher praise when I see song ratings and other comments about the song since the album release. For me too, I liked it more in the context of the full album, but Im wondering why. Yes, we now have the whole story for the song to be heard in lyrical context, but even musically, it just jumps out at me much better than it did when I first heard it. Im wondering if the song prior to it, Wreckers, increased my liking for HF more due to some of the contrasts between the two songs. Interesting how hearing some songs consecutively can influence our opinion of the individual songs than just hearing them in isolation.....kind of like the perceptual illusion of seeing the same color darker or brighter depending on which other color it's paired with, making it not look like the same color or hue. Anyone else share a similar experience?
  11. QUOTE (Rushman14 @ Jul 23 2012, 06:56 PM) QUOTE (Gompers @ Jul 23 2012, 04:54 PM) Not worse than VT, but not that much better. What is worse, the mixed levels are not that great. Totally under play Alex and Neil and over play Ged. Too many places where Neil (mostly higher toms, but heavy toms are over done) and Alex get left in the Ged mud. interesting, i thought some of Alex's guitar parts were loud and harsh sounding, especially the title track. It's def bass heavy, but dont hear a lot of mud. I can follow the bass lines pretty well note for note. Lerxst is def quite loud too in many spots with Neil's fills often sounding subdued, and in other spots, his fills sounding more upfront, so inconsistent.
  12. QUOTE (Gompers @ Jul 23 2012, 06:57 PM) QUOTE (FountainOfSyrinx @ Jul 23 2012, 05:12 PM) QUOTE (An Enemy Without @ Jul 22 2012, 08:53 PM) QUOTE (FountainOfSyrinx @ Jul 22 2012, 07:10 PM) How can you complain about the production... who gives a flying f**k about production. Most people. I don't get why the production value has to take a hit on the musical quality. It's not even bad. The complaining is quite annoying, actually. Is your hearing quality challenged? The sound quality of CA makes the music annoying to me. I am not happy about this because I could enjoy it much more. The sonic production is def loud and compressed, but nowhere near VT to me and most here. To the extent that it bothers someone is just something subjective.

Then again, Im complaining about you complainimg about the complaining that the complaining is annoying.....
  14. QUOTE (ReflectedLight @ Jul 15 2012, 04:46 PM) QUOTE (The Body Electric @ Jul 15 2012, 04:43 PM) BU2B. The Blind Watchmaker / Dawkins reference in the lyric is obvious but I absolutely adore the vehemence and anger with which "while our loving Watchmaker loves us all to death" is delivered at the end. Very satisfying delivery of Neil's feelings about faith in religion and neatly sums up how many of us feel about such indoctrinations. One of the best aspects of the CA storyline IMO. just when you thought he got everything off his chest with s & a, and almost everyone going into the making of ca thought he was going to move on to something else. He did....moved onto telling a story with some faith resistance left over, but with a much greater emphasis on existential themes, universal experiences, and a strong message about resolving bitterness and learning from hardship through giving to humanity and letting go of control from the past.
