  2. QUOTE (Atomic.Feedback! @ May 31 2007, 01:12 AM) QUOTE (lerxt1990 @ May 30 2007, 06:36 PM) QUOTE (GeddyRulz @ May 30 2007, 07:34 PM) QUOTE (Atomic.Feedback! @ May 30 2007, 03:54 PM) QUOTE (GeddyRulz @ May 30 2007, 04:45 AM) I watched that special on the History Channel the other night, "Star Wars: The Legacy Revealed." It was great, and really reinforced what we've known all along: there's a lot going-on in these movies; more than just the surface good-versus-evil SciFi story. There's so much more! It's a modern re-telling of old myths. And it's told in six "episodes" the same way that some myths are told in multiple "volumes." The fact that Lucas's story is sorta "copied" from previous stories needn't enter into the discussion - all of those old myths have elements in common; Lucas is just being faithful to the traditional "hero's journey" myth, re-told a hundred times in ancient literature. Lucas re-tells the old myths for modern audiences... on film! He also puts a bit of a new spin on it. Find me an old story that has a "Wookie" named "Chewbacca" in it, and I'll concede that Lucas is a hack. I defy anyone to find anything deeper than "Good vs. Evil" in that whole mess. Watch the aforementioned "Star Wars: The Legacy Revealed" on the History Channel to see what the esteemed University professors say about "Star Wars" and the re-telling of important myths. Or get a taste of that on the bonus disc of the "Star Wars" trilogy DVD, or in my earlier post (which you quoted, but must not have read). Some interesting ideas that "Star Wars" explores: Redemption and resurrection. The relationship between fathers and sons. Man versus machines. Religion versus science. The nature of evil. Politics: The rise of dictators, and the diminishment of liberty. Etc. There's a lot more going on that just "good versus evil" in that "whole mess." Interesting. Saw some of that in SW but not all of it. Touche. I stand defied. *bows out* I watched the special as well. I loved the Kevin Smith comments on the films. For the record I loved the prequel trilogy, but I did dislike Jar Jar. But the way The History Channel defended him in the special had me rethinking Jar jar as a character. Mabey a little more tolerable
  3. Liked It, there is still room for another sequel. Depp has been quoted as saying "if a good script were to be written" he'd do it, but the third movie ended the Elizabeth/Will storyline really. If there were a 4th pirates their involment might not be there
  4. Ok all you TRF members this is the first of The Owl's movie reviews, and for my first movie review I will review Spiderman 3. NOTE: This review contains severe spoilers that include plot details and ending details, if you wish not to spoil the movie for yourself, read no further........... Well here goes, I attended Spiderman 3 at a midnight screening on Friday May 4 2007. And Let me state for the record I very much liked this film. The film picks up right were SM2 left off. Peter Parker/Spiderman in love with Mary Jane Watson, an Icon of New York city, and with Harry Osborne facing the decision on what and how will he deal with the fact that his best friend is Spiderman "who killed his father". Let me say, that out of all the 3 SM films that this film is the biggest departure from the Comic versions of Spiderman. And this film's first hour indeed moves really fast. And one negative thing to say about this film that scenes that introduced the villans of the film moved really quick, for example the scene in which Harry osborne uses his fathers preformance enhancers lasts about 5 seconds, It moves from one shot to Harry walking out of the ventalation chamber with a cloud of green smoke behind him. We also have no action until about the 20-30 minute mark of the film, where the now beefed up Harry attacks a non-costumed Peter Parker, but the lack of action is made up for with the personal content in the beginnig of the film (Mainly Mary Jane/Peter stuff, and Peter deciding to prepose to MJ) . This film concidering the amount of seperat plot lines did really well to manage them all, the best of which is the Black Suit Spidey story line. It's really good to see spidey act like a pure asshole. The Flint Marco/Sandman story line runs a little fast, but is good nontheless and is the introduction of Black Suit Spidey in action (Sand man is completly torn apart by spidey). This story line also revolves around the truth that it was Flint Marco that killed Peter's uncle Ben Parker, not the Wrestling Match robber from the first film The Peter/Harry story line is great. After his battle with Peter, Harry is left with no-short term memory (kinda "soap operaish" but I'll take it) and can't remember that Spiderman killed his father, or that Peter is indded Spiderman. This is remidied by a vision of his Father that brings it all back. He then uses MJ to break up with Peter which leads to another battle with Black Suit Spidey vs. Harry/New Goblin. Lastlky is the Venom story line , which is also really well done, Eddie Brock a rival photographer to Peter competes for a job, that leads to a hatered of Peter Parker that comes right in time for his turn with the Black Suit, but I'll discuss that later. One Thing that truly sucked in the film was the Gwen Stacy story line, this is where comic fans are going to bash the film. Gwen in this film creates a very small love triangle relationship between Peter and MJ. It runs very short and the Asshole/black suit peter parker uses Gewn to get to Mary Jane and make her jelous. And thats all. Should have put more time into villian origin instead. All of these storylines culiminate when Peter decided to shead the Black Suit. The symbote binds with Eddie Brock and voila VENOM ARISES. Venom meets with Sandman to defeate Spiderman by luring him to the final battle sight by doing what else......Kidnapping Mary Jane!!!! This also leads to the climax in the Harry story line with Peter requesting the Help of Harry to defeat these two villians "which he can't do alone". Harry, now horribly disfigured since his battle with Black Suit spidey, refuses. Spidey goes to fight alone. Harry is confronted by his Butler, who reveals to him that it was not Spiderman that killed his father, but he indeed died by his own Blade (The Glider), and that "he cleaned Norman Osborne's wounds" when spiderman brought his body in the first film. Spidey alone goes to rescue MJ, and in the process of doing so gets his now red and blue ass handed to by Sandman and Venom. But just as the death blow to spiderman is going to be unleased, here comes.......(Fanfare music) Harry Osborne fighting for good!!!!!! Yeah!!!. And together they are able to deal a good fight . Defeating Sandman. During the fight with Venom however is a little tougher, Venom gets the oppertunity to kill Spidey with Harry's glider, but Harry steps in the way giving his life for Peter. Spidey is then able to defeat Venom, using the cheesiest kill in film history, Sound Vibrations. The final blow is when Spidey uses a Goblin Bomb to finish off Venom. Harry dies in Peter's and MJ arms and they attend his funeral. The last scene involves Peter and Mary Jane reunitig in a slow dance, but noting else is said. leaving room more sequels. Overall this film is really good, and Other than the Gewn Stacy story arc, The film did an appopriate job in handeling the over abundance of stroy lines, although they did seem a little rushed at points. I rate this film higher that the second film, but still did not match the greatness of the First Film The Owl's rating of Spiderman 3: 7.5/10 My next review will be: Pirates of the Caribbean "At world's End" released May 25

  6. QUOTE (Necromancer @ Apr 25 2007, 03:59 PM) somehow, the fact that he got Lucass's permission makes it not as funny. Y'know? Not entirley, Wierd Al Yankovic dosen't "need" permission to parody someone's song, it's just a tolken of respect (which is obviously the case here). And the fact that he does get "permission" dosen't make his songs less funny
  7. Do you all like these movies, I think the're great, and I cant wait for Oceans 13 to come out. The first one is a masterpiece, probably the most re-watchable film I have. The second however was a good movie in its own right. I liked the film, but had to watch it a second time to appreicate it for all its worth. Compared to Ocean's 11, 12 was far less of a film but still worth owning. I absoultly cant wait for the third. It'll be great.
  8. QUOTE (Ya_Big_Tree @ Apr 24 2007, 08:24 AM) QUOTE (The Owl @ Apr 23 2007, 04:52 PM) I think it is better than season 10 so far. Not a dull moment, but the 7 episodes that have aired so far is all we are getting until October. Thats when run 2 will start. I Know!!! Grrr.. I'm so pissed about that!!! I'm used to them airing episodes that way. (half of the season in the spring/half in fall) They have been doing that since season 7

QUOTE (JohnnyBlaze @ Apr 17 2007, 07:40 AM) QUOTE (rushgoober @ Apr 17 2007, 09:34 PM) QUOTE (treeduck @ Apr 16 2007, 12:48 PM) Actually I hate Tom Hanks since he became the Oscar-winning favorite son of Hollywood. Forrest Gump now there's a stupid shit film if ever I saw one... Did his popularity and Oscar wins somehow lessen his acting abilities? I think Forest Gump is brilliant, as is Tom Hanks. Tom Hanks is one of the few Hollywood favorites that I think deserves all the accolades he gets. Though I didn't think Forrest Gump was brilliant (I thought it was okay), I do think he's proven himself many times over. tom Hanks in forrest gum was great, completly deserving of every accolade he recieved. But when he tried to carry those accolades over to "Castaway" it didn't go over so well. Castaway was an alright film, but listening to Tom Hanks talking to a beach volleyball for 2 hours is too freakin much

I of course speak of The Matrix and Lord of the Rings trilogies. The one film from each trilogy that I had the misfortune of seeing were so bad they put me to sleep. The Matrix while I was in the theater. On a good note, I didn't have to pay for the ticket, and I got a good two and a half hour nap out of it. Just horrible movies. And with the Matrix, what else could you expect, it starred Keanu Reeves, who's only good films were The Devil's Advocate (because of Pacino) and the Replacements (because of Gene Hackman and the actor who played the kicker). The 2nd and 3rd Matrix movies were ok. Certainly not a great way to end the story, but at least it was pretty to look at. The first Matrix, on the other hand, was an absolute masterpiece. The LOTR trilogy to me is one of the finest creations, even works of art, ever produced in cinema as far as I'm concerned. An absolute phenomenal achievement on every level, and one that will undoubtedly stand the test of time, continuing to give great enjoyment to hundreds of millions for decades to come. Some of the worst movies of all time??? So how was that for ripping you to shreds? Meh, it's all opinions. You know I still like you regardless doubled_mystic, bad taste in movies and all. Yeah i don't understand the LOTR's in the most hated category. He is certainly one of the group of about a hundred people in the world that feel that way - But that's His opinion - I wouldn't put The Matrix or LOTR movies as my most hated BUT I don't like them AT ALL. Matrix 1 and 2 and LOTR 1 & 3 put me to sleep (I didn't see Matrix 3 or LOTR 2...and 'NO' I wasn't tired or sleepy when I saw those flicks). I tried watching LOTR 1 twice because everyone seemed to have a hard on for it. I thought I might've been missing some classic movie. Well, I fell asleep both times. And the same thing happened with Matrix 1...tried to see it twice and fell asleep both times. I'll admit that Matrix and LOTR are visually cool but that's where it ends for me. Do you not like sci-fi and fantasy in general? As far as I'm concerned, the 1st Matrix and the LOTR trilogy is about as good as it gets in the sci-fi and fantasy arena... Yes I like sci-fi and fantasy. I liked the original Star Wars movies, some of the Star Trek movies, Terminator, Alien, many superhero movies (which could be be categorized in sci-fi and/or fantasy), etc. I just didn't like the Matrix and LOTR movies. I strongly disagree that they're as good as it gets in that arena as you stated. Well, in terms of sci-fi, The Matrix is somewhat non-traditional - it's not an outer space epic, but it is sci-fi. There are a LOT of great sci-fi movies that have been made, including many of the ones you've mentioned. The Lord of the Rings movies, on the other hand - to me they have no equal in the world of fantasy movies, not even close. To me it would be like comparing an 8-year old's art with Monet or Picasso or whatever someone's favorite artist are. They are absolute masterworks. Of course you're netitled to your opinion, but I'm just puzzled to no end when people don't like those movies, much less hate them. My wife and I have the extended versions of all three and we've watched them countless times. Pure art of the highest order. Then again, people can't understand my loathing of VT and insist that's high art too, so I guess there's no accounting for taste. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7dZUJj2DSc8 Ok I am a fan of LOTR, but Randall makes some good points against LOTR. And you can't compare The Rings to the Star Wars saga. The Force will always hold true. (and that includes the prequel trilogy as well)
  14. QUOTE The Road Goes on Forever, and the Party Never Ends - Robert Earl Keen
  15. It's kinda sad, Anna Nicole Smith's death has caused more pulblicity that the deaths of the the last 2 presidents combined (Ford, Regan). And now a movie, this is kind of getting out of hand,
  16. I love this album, but this is probably my least faviorate cover for a Pink Floyd album. The Final Cut, great music, not so great artwork http://www.w-fenec.org/photos/2004/rock/pink_floyd_final_cut.jpg
  17. Is it just me, or does anyone else go see movies on the midnight screenings of films on the Thursday (Technically Friday) before the films air? I love these screenings, you don't have to deal with the Friday night crowds, and the crowds you do deal with are older than the middle school children and the Younger High School crowd. These are movies I've seen for a midnight screening 1. Star Wars ep.3 2. Pirates of the Caribbean: DMC 3. Saw 3 4. X-Men The Last Stand 5. Clerks 2 just to name a few. So does anyone else do the midnight thing?
  18. Now that the change has been made its now.... http://products.priceclash.co.uk/images/nodrop/220/B000026A08/music/anderson-bruford-wakeman-howe.jpg vs. http://home.q04.itscom.net/hiropon/meddle.jpg vs. http://www.thebestlinks.com/images/6/6c/Rush_Hemispheres.jpg i voted storm, but it is very close. These are the 3 best cover art artists in the music business
  19. It would be easier if you let song titles in. And thats what I'll do. 2112 Red Barchettas Driven to Rivendell beneath, between, and behind the Trees.... Screw this, adding songs titles dosen't make this easier. Verbs are hard to come by in the titles of Rush songs or Albums
  20. QUOTE (Finbar @ Apr 7 2007, 02:11 PM) I really think Roger Dean should've been included in this poll. But of course, that's just IMFO! Yes, Mod's please add Roger Dean. I completly forgot about him (Yes, Asia) when I made this . Ashamed I should be. Please add him and alter the tiltle of the thread please
  21. QUOTE (tangdog @ Apr 7 2007, 11:09 AM) Syme has also done some good work for Megadeth and DT. I know and Storm has also done work for Audio Slave and Alan Parsons. I was merely putting what the're most known for.
  22. I love both these artists and have each helped the bands they do covers for shine. Storm is mostly known for his cover art with Pink Floyd and Syme as you know is known for his work with Rush . It's http://discoblog.houste.info/images/Pink%20Floyd%20-%20Animals.jpg vs http://www.hall9000.de/rubriken/service/plattentruhe/grafiken/rush_test.jpg Take your pick (Note this is not a comparison of music, just cover art) And mods, if you feel another artist deserves a spot fell free to add them on.
  23. QUOTE (Ya_Big_Tree @ Apr 4 2007, 03:24 PM) [/quote] Spielberg is SOOO OVERRATED!! I will defend this point if you would like me to. Basically it all boils down to he couldn't make a climax in his movies if his life depended on it. He chokes and ruins the whole thing, ie Minority Report. Close Encounters of the Third Kind. There, an excellent climax by Mr. Spielberg. A movie ending thats probably on my top 15 at least
  24. QUOTE (treeduck @ Apr 3 2007, 03:32 PM) If you want a truly overrated director then here it is, I give you M. Night Shyamalan... Signs - Crap The Village - over the top, unconvincing, mind-freezing and sleep-inducingly boring. Unbreakable - totally stupid and laughable The Sixth Sense - THE most overrated film of all time, drawn out, slow, boring and a damp squib of a denouement... I totally don't get why this guy's films are popular... I was going to say Shyamalan as well. I just can't get into his films. And his name is a testimate to how bad horror films were in the 90's (other than Silence of the Lambs) . Concidering he made the "best critically acclaimed" horror film in that decade "Sixth Sense". Hell Eli Roth only has 2 films under his belt and he's a better filmmaker that M. Night Shyamalan.
