  1. See, to me, this thread is in the worst possible place... ...and you want me to hire YOU as my latex salesman?
  2. Did they make sure to list Spinal Tap BEFORE the puppet show?
  3. Before this thread, I never knew that I wasn't the only one who hated Heavy Metal. It's good to know I'm not alone! But I doubt I'll find any allies to help me with my future "Red Barchetta is the most boring Rush song ever" thread If, in some alternate universe, "Red Barchetta" ended up on the Heavy Metal soundtrack, I'd just have more reason to hate. and isn't hate what art is all about? edit: punctuation
  4. QUOTE (WCFIELDS @ Jul 27 2009, 12:13 PM) QUOTE (Slime @ Jul 26 2009, 09:08 PM) Movies generally need the following things in order to be any good 1. Interesting/engaging plot 2. Character development and in the case of movies based off of other media (ie comic books), you must also be able to answer "yes" to the following question 3. Can the movie stand on its own rather than relying on the existing IP to make sense? Heavy Metal failed miserably in all three areas. I know it was based off of a comic book or whatever, and that was probably part of the problem. The characters sucked and the stories they were in sucked even more. The Harry Potter movies also increasingly sucked at that third element. I can enjoy the HP movies because I have read the source material, but I get the feeling that a person who has not read the books would be utterly lost and confused at times. Lots of stuff in the HP movies, including very important elements from the books, was never explained on screen, or at least not adequately. So let's get back to bashing Heavy Metal! I sure love doing it Yea, the characters suck. What other movie can you think of where the supposed "hero" of the main story doesn't actually speak? This was an animated movie made in the 1980s, so there's really no excuse. Even Wall-E made some noises resembling speech, and quite honestly Wall-E's dialogue with EVE was about ten million times more interesting than the words I heard in Heavy Metal. The characters had no real development, and they were two dimensional. Again, maybe they are explained better in the comic, but that's the problem...the movie is not the same thing! None of the characters lasted long enough on screen to really be explained well. The same thing happened to the stories, I bet. Maybe they are very interesting and well developed in the comic, but the same problem arises yet again that the movie is NOT the comic. Movies have to be able to stand on their own. You can't turn the existing IP into a crutch for the movie. It's just lazy. There, I explained it. Hopefully I'm still allowed to hang around TRF and if you want to explain how very wrong I am, go ahead. You have the power to do pretty much anything you like (except make me watch that movie again) When you watched Heavy Metal were you seriously expecting huge intelligent dialogues and and deep plot?? Sounds like your expectations were pretty high going in.........it wasn't supposed to be movie along the lines of HP.......like I siad before, I didn't think it was great (it was ok), it's what it was........I didn't take it too seriously....... I was expecting something resembling plot and character development. Good dialogue is also something I like seeing. All of those are things I expect from EVERY movie. I may not have been expecting Shawshank Redemption (that movie is probably the polar opposite of Heavy Metal), but I expected SOMETHING. They might have at least attempted to have a story and character development.

  6. The Simpsons is definitely one of the most important television shows of all time. For me, it's been on so long that it's hard to imagine television WITHOUT it. It has definitely lost whatever impact it had a long time ago, but it's still a viable show. I might be in a minority opinion here, but I think they could have made the show a lot better by letting the characters age. Not one season per year of life necessarily, but just....eventually.
  7. QUOTE (WCFIELDS @ Jul 25 2009, 02:26 PM) QUOTE (Slime @ Jul 20 2009, 11:51 PM) This has gone on for three pages? Say what you want about the Potter fans (like me!), the haters can get WAY more mileage out of a topic But SIRIUSly, at least the people here who have beef with HP have actually read them. I know TOO many people who go into tirades against HP without having actually read them. Worse yet, they say STUPID things like "Well I don't need to read them". If you wanna bash some of the stuff in the HP books, I'll JOIN you! That's right, I think there is plenty in the books to criticize. Know how I can criticize the books? That's right, I READ them! Let's RON with this topic for a bit, shall we? I didn't start criticizing that POS "Heavy Metal" movie until I actually sat through every unbearable minute of it. I was looking forward to it after hearing good things, but when I actually saw it, I wanted to cry blood. It was easily.....EASILY....the worst movie I've ever seen. It's only a step above the few minutes of the Star Wars Holiday special that I saw. Like the SWHS, Harry Potter's reputation seems to precede it, and too many people make up their minds without actually watching or reading. It really is a SEAMUS, though, when people start bashing the fans of HP. I hear the same thing as a video game player, but really it's everywhere in art. The feeling that some people have of "OMG YOU LIKE THAT??? LOL YOU SUK!!11one! U HAV N0 BRAIN!". I'd hope that people who have two digits in their age would be over this sort of thing, but I hear it all the time. NEVILLE forget, though, that it's all supposed to be fun! People just like different kinds of fun. What's wrong with that? As you can tell, I've been having a bit of fun with this post Heavy Metal is the worst movie you've ever seen? HAve you watched many movies man????? I hate to derail this thread (because of course this thread is SO productive and full of insight), but yes Heavy Metal is the worst movie I've EVER seen. I've seen plenty of movies, and know when I've watched a bad one. True, I haven't seen everything, but of those movies I have seen, it's EASILY the worst.
  8. I saw it today It's more of the same since movie 4...filming scenes of the book and editing them together rather than making a movie that can stand on its own. It wasn't bad, really. It just left out a lot of the really important information and some of the best scenes. The funeral was the biggest omission in this regard. I'm also used to Snape stealing the scene, and this movie didn't have as much of that. He was present, and his scenes worked really well. but they could have been ever better.
  9. Basic lesson of cartoons: Voices MAKE the show!

  11. making jokes about Harry Potter fans is so truly original. I'm seriously in awe of your brilliance. Why, instead of reading Harry Potter, I could have read BRILLIANT posts like yours. May I start worshiping you now?
  12. My students are never loud, obnoxious or rude towards me. They always behave during class and they always try their best.
  13. Starcraft 2 doesn't excite me in the least I also love Amazon's policy of not shipping region 1 video games to SK
  14. Kyle Reese said "Come with me if you want to live" For me, that's all they needed. I honestly would have hated the movie if they didn't have that line! It was pretty cool. They didn't get the human interaction as solidly as in the first two movies, but they did it a bit better than T3. It makes me anxious to see how John and Kyle's relationship will develop in the next movie.
  15. Attention all posters! The TRF Musical Taste Police have been informed of this thread. You have five minutes to gather your belongings and vacate this thread before the Tac-Team is sent in. As legislated* by Section 5, Paragraph 3 of the TRF Musical Taste Act of 2001 (hereby referred to as "The Act"), no person may start a thread about a musical act, group, sound or scene that is contrary to popular opinion of the posters of TRF.com. A first offense is punishable by, but not limited to, spamming of the thread with useless comments about how the band "sucks" or "is tEh l4me". Repeat offenders will be apprehended, processed and placed into internment camps where they will be educated about proper musical taste. They will also receive training into how to keep their musical tastes to themselves so as not to offend other posters. *The meeting in question was marred by one incident. Council Member Smith openly suggested that those looking at a thread where the band discussed was not to their liking simply "move along and not waste anybody's time with a useless post". Thankfully, he was later shot.
  16. "alternate realities" indeed. At least they explained it well enough. This seems to be a more total reboot than some other franchises. Vulcan being entirely destroyed, Spock/Uhura, Spock's mother dying and the most time travel in any Trek seem to affirm that. It's definitely the most action packed Trek, and it was well done action too. The casting was also spot on. The actors really nailed the character's personalities quite well, especially Kirk. I didn't hate the music like you guys did. I was actually thinking about it when Kirk and Sulu fought those guys on the drill. Honestly, I was thinking "if they bring back that old fight music, I'll laugh so much" Worth seeing, even though they changed too much of the back story for my personal taste. The sequel will be interesting to note, but how many times can the Trek series have a movie based on "the ultimate crisis that will destroy the entire galaxy"?
  17. QUOTE (ouchithurts @ Apr 27 2009, 02:22 AM) I do not know if there is a thread for this subject. If there is, I apologize. Anyway I think this can be fun. So all questions/answers pertain to TV shows going back as far as the mind can go. Here is the first question. What happened on June 12, 1983? Last episode of M*A*S*H?
  18. I dunno about more reboots Time and effort spent rebooting a series is time that is NOT spent on coming up with original ideas. I saw the first Predator movie a long time ago, and it was ok, but I don't think I'd bother watching a remake of it.
  19. Still makes me wanna watch! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N3xA7cjbpJY "Have you ever seen such cruelty?"
  20. Eminem - Kim yet another song about murder. Makes most of the previous examples seem like something you'd play at a birthday party. and the prequel to that one Eminem - Bonnie and Clyde '97
  21. When did this turn into SOCN?
  22. I saw Dragonball: Evolution last night It was a bit better than I expected. Not brilliant by any means, but it stays true to the mythos.
