  1. ] Exactly from which tour would you want the three Clockwork Angels songs to come from? It was the Clockwork Angels Tour! Thats like saying that you didn't want 5 Moving Pictures songs from the LAST DAMN TOUR at the Signals Tour. :P I think he's presuming that this tour will be the band's final live effort, at least of this magnitude. So we're pretty much just off the CA tour--during which they played most the album--and now they're on an anniversary tour which may well be their last major set of this length and breadth (and the poster is seemingly taking that as a given), and yet we use up three slots on CA material. I can understand how many would find this less than ideal. To each his own. Who really cares? People feel the need to prop up that album to the ad nauseum point that I start to wonder if you guys are trying to convince yourselves! Let it be! (I like it...but I just don't think that the songs by and large instantiate the slick composition--while allowing all those musical lines and nuances enough discernible separation and room to breath--that draws me to their many better works).
  2. QUOTE (Rush-O-Matic @ Sep 26 2012, 07:53 AM) QUOTE (Don'tMeetInBars @ Sep 26 2012, 05:26 AM) This guy has some excellent footage from Columbus: http://www.youtube.com/user/RTMorasonMD2 Those are great! Thanks! Manhattan Project sounded beautiful with the strings repeating at the end and everything. Awesome.
  3. QUOTE (Snaked @ Sep 21 2012, 12:59 AM) Posting from my tablet... hope this works. 2112 - Columbus The Big Money - CBus Nice! And LOL -- check out Neil on the screen at the end of The Big Money. Had me laughing pretty good.
  4. I prefer a firm list, unless they find that something they brought "out of the vaults" is hitting a snag or Geddy's having trouble singing something (in which case, with so many great songs to choose from they might as well substitute). But I'm not really big on the swapping from night-to-night deal. I could see maybe if they swap the staples they often play (besides those which they HAVE to play, like Tom Sawyer and... well, maybe that's it at this point if they're dropping TSoR). I think it sucks when they bring stuff like Manhattan Project and Body Electric out of the vaults and then you end up missing out depending on the show. Especially when they're swapping a rareity for something like Dreamline. At least, when they've been touring as often as they have been... Otherwise I probably wouldn't care much at all and would just be happy to hear anything. But I tend to really prefer the deeper cuts in the present context (and I do really love most the '80s stuff, so...)
  5. A little annoying that two of the songs being swapped out haven't been played in like forever. And they even have the strings for Manhattan Project. Seems like Subdivisions and Working Man would have been the ideal tracks to alternate.
  6. From everything I've read that makes reference to PW, it sounds like they consider it one of their best works. Geddy and Neil especially. I would think even Alex, whose frustrations with the synth period are well-documented, has to take at least some pride in the work (I think the way he wrote guitar parts during that period is pretty awesome, that he found "a place" just fine and serves the songs beautifully). At the end of the day it seems kind of silly to complain about the set too much. I mean, they've toured pretty often over the last 10 years, especially considering that they ain't spring chickens anymore. We just got MP, their most popular album, in its entirety, two new albums, an anniversary tour, multi-leg tours in support of new albums... And look at the bright side -- there's really nothing about this set to me that says "final tour." They're definitely projecting at least another tour or two, I'd say. The main reason for this tour afterall, is to play the new stuff. Why not throw in some deeper cuts from the mid-80s that we're likely to never hear live again. Maybe save Ged's voice for future tours (or at least in order to perform the new stuff as well as can be). Now was the perfect time for some of these tracks. And over the last few tours there's only been like one song from PW featured. Given that they're very fond of it, I'm more than happy to pay them this indulgence. I also just really love the album.
  7. I was so excited to see this back only to have it taken away from me! (that is, if they do an A/B straight alternating pattern).
  8. Looks like I'd get probably get "B" and I'd actually prefer "A" slightly except for maybe the encore. I do like Middletown better than Mahattan, but I was kind of looking forward to hearing it live and with strings deeper in the set. And no Body Electric either... Oh well, so it goes.
  9. So-so. I like Xanadu a lot in terms of getting just one "long proggy song" in there. That'd be my pick as well. I agree that TBM is the better opener. However, I think I would replace Subdivisions with New World Man or maybe throw Digital Man back in there since that and Analog always stick out as two sides of a coin in my mind. Between the Wheels is pretty much played out for me at this point and The Body Electric is one of my favorite songs (also not played since original tour). From the videos so far, I wish maybe they'd tear into the thing a bit more aggresively, but it's always so hard to tell with cell phone recordings and whatnot. I'd probably keep Bravado and Far Cry as well. Come to think of though, if you're gonna sub Far Cry I'd really go for Armor and Sword. I think it's a better song, still fits the "theme", although FC has kind of become the banner song of that album (teased lead-off 'single', featured in the Rock-Doc, etc.).
  10. QUOTE (Natch @ Sep 9 2012, 10:28 AM) You know what I love about this setlist? It's the fact that it's RUSH on stage playing it. I've said this before and I'll say it again. Sometimes we forget that Rush was nearly done as a band. And aside from Neil's tragedies, the longevity of this band is extremely rare. We should be thankful that this band is still making music and giving us a different look every time they come out. You never know what to expect from this band. It's always fresh. The naysayers and negative Nellies have every right to complain. But, just keep in mind that you're complaining about the icing on the cake being whipped cream instead of butter cream. Just enjoy the damn cake! This is probably as enlightened and mature an attack on the naysayers as could be given and I pretty much agree. But I still want to stress that this is what message forums are for -- for people to discuss and share their opinions. It's totally fine with me even if though I'm really excited about the set. Now if someone sitting behind me at the concert complains through all the '80s or PWs material, they're pretty much being an a-hole in my book. That's not the place for it.
  11. I love the setlist but I don't mind people who aren't stoked about it sharing their opinions. Wish they'd swap out Working Man, but I guess that's become the token '70s song they like jamming to. And it does kind of fit the "theme" more than ever. If they tour again it would be cool if they let the fans choose maybe 3 encore songs. Like on their website they could offer maybe as many as 5 or 6 choices for each slot and let everyone vote once. That would be perfect for R40 if they venture forth again.
  12. QUOTE (Shredder2 @ Sep 8 2012, 10:44 AM) I give this setlist HUGE props! Power Windows finally gets some love! I'm psyched to see "The Body Electric" on there, especially "Territories"! I'm sad to see no Presto songs on there. I'm glad the P/g songs made up for it, though! DECEMBER 2ND, Y U NO HURRY ALREADY?! Yes! Body Electric is such a wild surprise. One of my favorites from the period. And Power Windows really has to be one of their best of any period.
  13. Only thing I can really complain about here is Working Man. Just so over-played for me at this point. Of course I'd prefer older stuff to some of the newest stuff, but I always enjoy the enthusiasm they have for pulling off their latest works. And it always shows.
  14. Looks like a good setlist. Most of my favorite 80s stuff being represented and all! Some real surprises there. Hope everyone had fun last night. Why anyone would have believed the Internet lock stock and barrel pre-show is beyond me though!
  15. QUOTE (Scottishdood @ Aug 18 2012, 07:26 PM) If any of the naysayers have tickets for the front two rows at any of the venues....actually if any of the naysayers have tickets anywhere in any of the venues for any of the up and coming shows I'll buy them off of you as you obviously won't be attending the show then.....or will you??? I'm thinking that they will be among the pre show crowds having a beer, excited to see Rush playing live once more. Will they try and force their negative feelings about Clockwork Angels on their pre show companions...doubt it! Yes we are all entitled to our opinions and if they are that strong live by them, boycott the shows and let us who actually like this new suite of music enjoy it in the seats you really don't want at the show as this is such a let down for you in he history of Rush! So by this you mean to imply that the naysayers are somehow being insincere? They don't really dislike any of the new stuff but are just messing with the folks who do? And the key to "outing" this insincerity/hyprocrisy is this conceit of yours that they'll still damn well be attending the tour? In other words, they won't be living true to their ideals (of not liking the album)? Is that it? Or ... they are sincere, but having some negative views about CA should disqualify them from wanting to see a band they really like live? I'm not sure .... but Christ, either way some of you fanboys take this stuff waaaaaay too seriously! Why shouldn't someone who doesn't think CA is the bees-knees still not want to catch the tour (where classic stuff will also be played)? I wasn't too hot on a lot of the Snakes and Arrows stuff they played but I still wasn't going to pass up the opportunity to see my favorite band! And hell, in the end I thought the S&A stuff was some of the best-performed material off the tour (maybe half of it wasn't my favorite compositionally, but I still appreciated the chance to see it live). And no, I imagine the people who don't rank CA among their favorite works but still nevertheless wish to see it live will NOT be sharing their negative views in that context! Because that's not really the place for doing that! That's what message boards are for! THIS is where it is perfectly appropriate. Or should be... By the way, I haven't had much to say against the new album. I'm mainly just flabbergasted by the crass ego-boosting kind of posts that treat people as if nothing they say is worth a damn just because some people don't want to hear it. And again, why exactly that is the case is what's truly interesting here. And the reasons for it, well they ain't pretty...
  16. QUOTE (losingit2k @ Aug 18 2012, 06:09 PM) Here, I'll post a shortened version containing some of the more key points since you obviously have a real problem processing and comprehending thoughtful discussions (and judging by many of your posts here, even more of a problem respecting others and just acting your age. Jeez, you're almost two decades older than me and still you can't seem to manage!) But judging by things I guess I can see how you'd "need this" to try and feel better about yourself. Good going man! If this version is too long to comprehend, let me know, and I'll try to cut it down even more. Or hell, maybe there's a way of making my point using only emoticons. You seem to deck the forums with them like they're your primary language. ___________ The whole point of having a discussion board to me is precisely to let the dialectic take hold, not reflexively squash any negative opinion or immediately question the poster's credentials. So ... grow up! Let people talk. Stop trying to marginalize people out of some misguided notion of truth, or just plain ego-boosting, or a need for some kind of universalized, collective identity or sense of belonging, or whatever. You sound pathetic. What's the point of pages and pages of followed by the same terse praise? Life is short. Who wants to come to a forum to read fanboy boilerplate? Who's keeping score? Why the hell are we bandying about percentages in evaluating opinion on current album? What in the blue hell are some of you people really up to with all this? Ask yourselves! A forum is a place to come and have kick-ass discussions! Not to pander to yourself and other fans! What are you really saying when you criticize someone for posting a negative opinion merely for expressing said opinion? That the reason it's The Rush Forum is because it's for people who only like Rush and all things Rush, so come one come all and self-pander or get the 'f' the out? Is that why you come here? To congratulate yourself for liking great music!? Why do some people spend time on voicing their negative opinions? Because for a lot of people, for whom Rush's music means a great deal, critiquing newer material that honestly doesn't speak to them is their way of more fully appreciating the material they do love. Why we fall in love with certain songs and not others can be a very mysterious, abstract thing. We NEED other people's opinions, other perspectives, to try and make this intelligible to ourselves. I don't mean to imply that that need for "bonding" is immature, but rather the potentially derisive and exclusionary behavior that can result. ____________ Moderators, I know this is typical of most message boards, but is there anyway to cut down on this stuff? I guess it's easy enough to ignore, but there is quite a bit of it. Just isn't much fun. It seems like so many people feel they have to walk on eggshells around here and apologize in advance for posting anything even slightly negative. I tried reporting but it doesn't seem to be going through.
  17. The three songs I really like off S&As I like better than anything off CA. I think Armor and Sword is one of the best songs they've ever written and actually outclasses Farcry in almost all aspects. My more cynical side suspects that because Farcry was released out in front and teased like it was, fans united around the song and there's still that lasting element of collective identification (tinged with self-pandering in some circles...) that accounts for its seeming to be more of a "marquee" track than A&S. It is kind of the banner song of that album. That said, it is one of the three I really like. However, I think CA is much more even all-around. There's just nothing that gives me quite the satisfaction of A&S. And the less appealing tracks aren't so utterly boring like the less appealing stuff from S&As.
  18. The choruses are a little plodding (1-0-0-1-0-0 ...) but the verses are gorgeous and if they played the shit out of it this could be awesome. That said, something like Kid Gloves might more readily "sit well" in a set list in the year 2012. Also like BE's bass line over that of Kid Gloves. The solo section of the former also has Geddy and Alex both working their magic. While in the latter it's lots of 'straight eighths' from Ged. The lyrics of either song remain quite timely, if not moreso than back when they were written. But I actually prefer the sci-fi mien of Body Electric. In a culture that's very ambivalent about what it is, Neil goes for the throat. It's a neat, creative enough little conceit.
  19. Love this song. My favorite off GUP. I doubt they'll ever bring it back. But if they played the shit out of it (fatter bass sound for Geddy than on the original tour, and even the synths sound a little thin in that clip, otherwise a pretty good recording) it could go over really well I think.
  20. QUOTE (RushIslander @ May 15 2012, 05:16 AM) OP + the above post = Pathetic. Get the f**k over yourselves! Okay nice talking to you then. Wow, what a great discussion forum! I rarely come here because it's depressing to see what ***holes so many Rush fans really are. I really do expect more. So here ya go... Yeah man HF rocks my balls -- definitely the best single since Spirit of Radio, Tom Sawyer or just about anything else! Anyone who thinks they're too good to listen to it is obviously full of himself! There simply can't be any other explanation -- and even if there was it's not even worth discussing because discussing things on forums, rationally and intelligently without hurling epithets and strewing stupid emoticons all over the place is just beyond the pale! I mean ... WTF!?
  21. I liked the line about the audience being staid like they were watching a symphony. That is more the vibe I got. And he seemed to paint a more balanced picture with regards to the crowd than some are. His writing on the music itself seems a little stilted. At times it feels like he's simply groping for something halfways critical to say in order to impart an air of objectivity. But he's perhaps a bit more fair and even-handed then other reviewers who, like him, obviously aren't stalwart fans but who then go off into their "I'm too awesome for this kind of thing" subjectivizing. I did wince at him using the word "pretentious" ... more people really should get around to learning what that word really means at some point. I think that a few points were completely fair (i.e., as opposed to some negative reviews, I could at least see how another human being could think that). The tempo change-up in Closer to the Heart ... that didn't really work for me. But I still kind of admired them for trying to give it yet another spin. "Stick it Out" ... after enjoying the heaviness of the performance, initially, it did wear on me a little by the end in sounding like a wall of noise. This would have to be the one song in the whole show I found myself questioning as a setlist choice to be honest. Geddy amazes me, though I do think it's quite possible that he tries a little too hard (!) in the way he labors over some of the lyrics a little too much (almost in an ... operatic vein). Particularly some of lyrics that benefit from the more succinct phrasing of the original recordings. I had some examples in mind but I've already forgotten (probably because the show was so damn awesome ... yeah that's probably it!) @summersky -- In PA the demographics typically breakdown so that if you draw a basic t-shape over the state, the areas inside the 'T' (the center of the state and the northern end) are more conservative. That's all I meant. The state as a whole seems to be trending more the other way. And as for most conservatives I know (or anyone else for that matter), God or Jesus hardly make a difference in their daily lives, though most of them would probably categorize themselves as believers (I don't buy into any of the 'official' divinity mythologies on offer, but then I don't turn around in other moments and pretend like they make any difference in my daily life either). But if you're constantly exposed to those particular subcultures I can see how you'd feel differently.
  22. Also ... after the show most of the grandstand stayed through the entire closing video. I got caught right in the middle of the deluge that resulted when the video stopped playing.
  23. QUOTE (summer_sky @ Sep 1 2010, 11:08 AM) People tend to be more emotionally reserved in Puritanical Pennsylvania as compared to shows I attend in other regions and countries. The "t-section" of Pennsylvania tends to be more conservative, whereas the outlying sides are anything but (and trending more and more that way in recent years). I doubt even the t-section would qualify as puritanical, unless you're actually visiting with the Amish or something. And I guess with the area being as little as an hour drive to Philly or New York, maybe its concert-goers are among some of the more spoiled of Americans. Of course they're going to be going wild in South America -- how often to they see Rush or any performers of that caliber? I'm sure they get wild in parts of Europe, though come to think of it, that Frankfurt crowd didn't seem all that riled up (then again, after watching the Rio crowd, it's hard for anything to faze you). Inside I was a wellspring of emotions ... but looking at me from the outside, you wouldn't have known it. People are kinda like that.
