Does anyone think the management company has gotten the message about that shitshow release yet?

If the sales were low-low, they may notice that, and either (a) rethink their approach and figure out that no new live material was the culprit, for the most part, or

    (b) decide that these aren't worth doing anymore and that's that.

    Probably the second one, unfortunately.

Does Renfield have any meaningful screen time, or is it all Dracula/Cage?

Renfeld has more screen time than Cage, by my recollection.

I had no expectations going into this, my granddaughters wanted me to take them, and I laughed my ass off and was entertained plenty. Thumbs up from me!

I wonder if Geddy and Alex listened to tapes that DO exist, and decided they were not up to their standards, performance wise.

I've not dug deep into bootleg land, but have watched some blurry vids on youtube of Signals tour footage...and boy, some of the tempos are crazy.  And inconsistent.  I know some of the other live stuff, even the Live in YYZ concert suffer from Peart's rather...well, erratic time keeping, but maybe the Signals stuff across the board was worse?  Or maybe they weren't happy with their own parts?

I think it was a simple as those releasing the box set were lazy as F and miscalculated on how much the Live releases mean to those of us still interested enough in buying them.

I won't be getting this, and I'm annoyed as all hell they left out something...ANYTHING...live.

  4. 15 years later...

Whilst surveying the archiving process in this section, I found this thread. It's interesting to see how people reacted to hearing a 30-second clip of Far Cry for the first time, how it built anticipation for S&A, and it's especially interesting how it put a picture in fans' minds on what they thought the album would sound like.

I remember the excitement of getting the new Rush. I was in the Minneapolis airport. Felt a little guilty getting the 'pirated' version but not really as I knew I was gonna be buying it on cd anyways.

That was always the part that made it fine for me too, I knew I was going to buy it on release day, so grabbing pirated/shared songs and snippets beforehand was perfectly ok for me.

  5. So how much different will this Blu Ray Audio be from the 30th anniversary version?

I'm interested in that if it's going to be different somehow, but the rest of the stuff outside the new concert isn't a big deal for me. If it's realy going to be that different and that's the only way to get it though...sigh

  6. Thanks for posting! I thought I remembered the full length version maybe having been played on MuchMusic back in the day (whereas it was definitely just the shorter edit on MTV), but I can't remember for sure now. (Of course, that was 36 years ago...)

It was, I still have a copy or two on a vhs and a dvd someplace I'm sure that I taped off the channel back in the day. I remember it was a very "WTF" moment when I saw the edited version out there and not the full one.

  7. The thing with syntesizers and samplers is that you can manipulate almost any sound to make the base sound unrecognizable. A buddy of mine took a bass note on a little cheap sampler once and turned it into something nobody would guess was a bass note. Someone with the access to effects and equipment to make effects at the level of Geddy back then could have sampled a door slamming and turned it into those sounds. So it could literally be anything. Maybe Alex was humming along to the synth in the studio once and Geddy got the idea to sample it and mess around with it, who knows?
  8. (Yet another lingering question that's been bugging me for years ..)

On Subdivisions there is a synth track with an effect that sounds loosely like a choir in the full mix. It comes in around 0:27 in the intro, and comes back again at the very end of the song. When you listen to the isolated synth track, it sounds less like a choir and more like a weird phaser-like effect. It's not the same choir sound from The Analog Kid either, which is a synth patch on the OB-X(a). This just sounds more like a thick effect that got applied.

Anyone have any idea what that is? Per my Jacob's Ladder vocal effect thread, I sent this question to Terry Brown in a mail earlier today .. maybe if I'm lucky he'll reply back with some good info.

PS - I also can't find the isolated synth track on YouTube anymore - does anyone have a copy saved? I have the isolated synth track from Jammit, but it's not the same as what used to be on YouTube (where the 'choir' effect could be heard really clearly - I suspect there are multiple synth tracks stacked up on Subdivisions).

Edit - Here is a 'vocals only' isolated track still on YouTube where you can hear this sound a little better at 0:27 and 4:50

I have to laugh. You remind me of myself. Listening to music with a fine-tooth comb - what's this? what's that?

LOL I do this sometimes too...I loved listening to the quiet part before the guitar solo in Open Secrets, for example, and listening to the various instruments and effects layered in there.

  9. "Between the Wheels" on the Snakes and Arrows tour. I was elated when they started playing that one! Also, it was cool seeing them perform "The Camera Eye" on the Time Machine Tour, considering it was rarely (perhaps never?) performed live before then.

It had been played live before, but it had been a very long time...decades.

  10. Nothing is being released to theaters at the moment -- perhaps this will be a year off for Cinema Strangiato and it will return next August ...

I don't expect anything new in this sort of field to be released by them, honestly.

A year off is probably a relief for those putting it out, now they can release the same thing next August and, with a two year gap, a lot of people that may have skipped it might go now.

  11. Cut to the Chase is the one that really surprises me. It seems like it would be a good concert song. Al really stretched himself on the solo so I'm wondering if he didn't think he could do it live. I don't hear anything in the song that would be 'hate worthy'.

That's the one that has always stood out for me too. And, no matter what people might think of it, "The Big Wheel" seems like EXACTLY the kind of song off RTB that they would have wanted to play live on at least that tour.
