  1. http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b216/spirit3trails/t138386ylns.jpg C'mon a fake critic lured you into seeing this? Deserve to be taken! Where did they come up with $5.00? Most theaters charge 7 to 8.50 for movie.(At least around here.)
  2. 2001 A SPACE ODYSSEY- Only after reading Arther C. Clarkes book, saw the movie first thought it was a wacked out acid trip.THEN I read the book and it all made sense perfect adaptation. Can't say the same for sequel 2010 mediocre at best although the appearance of David Bowman was done well.
  3. Well ,kazzman beat me to it in worst department GODS AND GENERALS,great book horrible movie. THE GREEN MILE staring Tom Hanks very good adaptation of Stephen Kings novel. Hell we can do a entire thread on the best and worst adaptations to film on Kings books alone !
  4. A couple more notes about Donna Halper,She was one of the first to start the campaign to get RUSH in rock hall ,because of her persistence the hall had a RUSH exhibit in 02? Wish i would of seen it any one on forum see it? Also during Geddy's media tour of solo release he did a interview on WMMS old RUSH stomping ground not the same don't play RUSH anymore . DJ didn't no about Donna Halper and Geddy had to give her a history lesson about her own station!!!! Sad very sad.....
  5. The Donna Halper RUSH story and other fascinating rock tales are told in the book "RADIO DAZE" STORIES FROM THE FRONT IN CLEVELANDS FM AIR WARS. Thou it might be of interest for locals only. Theres some hilarious stories of THE WHO,Joe Cocker, Joan Jett, Big Country remember them? MMS use to have a free on the air concert called the coffee brake concert ,well the band got drunk the night before and came on stage the next day for the coffeebreak concert played one song then the lead singer said he was sick left the stage and the station had to scramble to fill the dead air!! Storie about Bowie ZIGGY debut in states was in Cleveland. Fun book good read..
  6. QUOTE (kazzman @ Jul 8 2005, 10:02 AM) QUOTE (softfilter @ Jul 8 2005, 03:08 AM) One that stands out for me is GODS AND GENERALS should of received a medal for sitting for what seemed close to four hours at theater enduring this cliche hollywood hog wash. B Sad to say that I was in that piece of trash. I was in Jackson's farewell speech and the battle of Manassas scenes. Hey thats still cool that you were in it ! A couple members of the SCV camp I belong to were in GETTYSBURG including our camp commander. He had issues with Tom Berengers portrayal of Longstreet guess some of them tried to tell him his hat wasen't right . (Hardcore Confederates in the Attic) On your'e SNL cowbell skit movie have Blue Oyster Cult playing themselves!!!
  7. Most recent worst, Amityville remake rehash same crap. One that stands out for me is GODS AND GENERALS should of received a medal for sitting for what seemed close to four hours at theater enduring this cliche hollywood hog wash. Better off being ABC mini series like North and South at least you would get commercial brakes. WAR IS HELL AND SO WAS WATCHING THIS MOVIE !!!
  8. The Pianist(2002)- A very touching film based on a true story about the classical pianist Wladyslaw Szpilman and his fight for survival in nazi occupied Warsaw,Poland. Enemy At The Gate I thought was good and put that down as one of my picks. But would like to see Stalingrad the other Pedro pick (Thought it played once on IFC)
  9. I stated at beginning of post a pick dosen't have to be about military combat. But also can be the same time frame which the conflict centered around (Gangs of New York) My guess Kazz you ment to say "Cold Mountain" and not Cold Harbor. The June 1864 battle which the federals suffered horrendous casualties in a matter of minutes. At least I'm not aware of any movie about this. Cold Mountain the movie I thought was good that it was somewhat faithful to Charles Frazier's novel. The book was great especially the vivid discriptions of a bleak war worn south. By the way Neil mentioned in GHOST RIDER this is one of his favorites.(The book) Your'e right on the whole about Civil War movies, there needs to be "A SAVING PRIVATE RYAN" type epic a reality check if you will that shows the carnage of Civil War combat. "GETTYSBURG" is also one of my picks ,this movie received alot of flack about the accuracy of film compared to real events of the battle. Critics missed the point that it was based on Michael Shaara's NOVEL and wasen't suppose to be a documentary. Now the follow up movie or in this case prequel based on his son's novel "GODS AND GENERALS" was just awful. How the hell did they get any fighting done with all those speeches is beyond me!! pedro2112 "DAS BOOT" IS ONE OF THE BEST own that one..
  10. Before this old thread just fades away and we sound tapps.. I was slightly amazed so many picked "THE PATRIOT" as one of there favorites. I to picked this for entertainment value but thought Mel Gibsons character had superman abilities! Such is the magic of cinema. What I did find interesting about this movie was it's mixture of real historical events and fiqures with ones representing the actual person of the revolution. Gibsons character is identical to the very real Francis "The Swamp Fox" Marion who conducted highly sucessful raids on the British after the fall of Charleston S.C. in 1780. The actor portraying British commander Cornwallis was of course based on the real one. The main controversy of this film centered around the character Colonel Tavington based on real British cavalry commander Banastre Tarleton.(Name changed to protect the innocent?) Our British cousins didn't take lightly the barbaric nature of his portrayal. The church burning comes to mind. Though this atrocity no doubt never happened, there is enough evidence to support the claim as one historian put it."Tarleton was cold hearted, vindictive and utterly ruthless" It was said he often gave orders of No Quarter to surrendering colonial American army troops.
  11. Another band I like that is influenced by country and "walks the line" between country and rock? hard to pigeon hole them to a musical style. COWBOY JUNKIES-Love this band and Margo Timmins sparse vocals sends chills down down my spine . Subdued beauty and texture to there songs.
  12. I like the old country for the most part the stuff I heard growing up. My parents were big country music fans. Patsy Cline her music is wonderful and timeless,Ray Price,Johnny Cash,Jim Reeves,Hank Snow,HANK WILLIAMS the list can go on and on. The point being this was and still is good music there influence on modern music is still being told and heard today, and not only country but rock artist have told there appreciation of these country pioneers U2,WHITE STRIPES,R.E.M are a example. Now alot for what passes as country today I can hate because it's not real country. You know the term " CROSSOVER" Shinia Twain crap.( great to look at though! )And thats the problem with country today it's all glossy and made up for mass appeal. It's like there embarrass of the roots. Such a shame, there are a few who are not DWIGHT YOAKAM and THE DIXIE CHICKS are keepers of the flame both great! REAL COUNTRY DEALS WITH SINCERE EVERY DAY ISSUES THAT REAL PEOPLE CAN RELATE TO!!! YES I LIKE COUNTRY NOT ASHAMED TO SAY SO....
  13. I always liked heart own four of there recordings-Little Queen, Bebe Le Strange,Private Audition,Greatest Hits live. A few things about heart I like them but always thought they couldhave, should havebeen better. They never seemed comfortable in what there identity was, that signature sound that you knew it was heart! Yes bands have to change and grow or else become stale but heart for me became that way because they would change direction to much like from album to album. They would make great hard edge ZEPP like grooves then next album pop sappy top 40 . Sometimes all on the same record good example is Private Audition hard rockin numbers like City's Burning and the very RUSH sounding The Situation but also on it the lame and hokey This Man is Mine. I just wish they would've stayed with the harder sounding stuff and gradually moved in other directions. One last thing that sucks on Greatest Hits live cd (upgraded from vinyl) the last three songs deleted -I'M DOWN/LONG TALL SALLY, And a kickass rendition of LED ZEPP ROCK AND ROLL(The way heart should have been!)
  14. Another Vietnam film my favorite,The Killing Fields-2001 Sam Waterson, John Malkovich.
  15. APOCALYPSE NOW-1979 FULL METAL JACKET-1987
  16. QUOTE (Pratt Boy @ Jun 20 2005, 01:28 PM) QUOTE (softfilter @ Jun 19 2005, 11:49 PM) ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT-1979 John boy Richard Thomas again. (Remake never seen silent original) All Quiet On The Western Front (1920) was an excellent movie and it wasn't silent. Some of the special effects were great considering it was made so long ago. I did not know that! Just seen photograph's of movie black and white images took for granted it must of been silent era flick. Like to see it hopefully local video store has it. Another one I liked Civil War movie again Friendly Persuasion-1956 Gary Cooper young Tony Perkins very similar in story to SHENANDOAH. A family of Quakers from Indiana who's peaceful existance is disrupted by the war.
  17. Drums Along the Mohawk- 1939 Henry Fonda,Claudette Colbert ALLEGHENY UPRISING- Also 1939 John Wayne SHENANDOAH-1965 James Stewart,Often overlooked Civil War yarn about a farmer caught between the Rebs and the Yanks refuses to take a side until his son is taken prisoner. (Very good)
  18. QUOTE (D-13 @ Jun 19 2005, 11:53 PM)I know this isn't a movie....but Band Of Brothers I love a lot! Also all the movies you listed are very good as well! Just can't get enough of Band of Brothers THANKS! I'm in the process of renting "Band of Brothers'' series on vol.3 now. EXCELLENT SO FAR.
  19. Being a avid reader of U.S. military history with the natural interest of my own family heritage my father being a WWII vet and my greatx3 grand father being a Civil war vet. Movies that I thought that brought these times to life better then others are as follows.(Please note your'e picks do not have to be about U.S military history nor about battles. The era's that certain conflicts centered around also would work!) REVOLUTION-1985 Al Pacino,Donald Sutherland If anything this film captured visually the essence of Colonial America (The movie itself not to good) THE PATRIOT-I know Mel Gibson is the terminator of the American revolution still a entertaining effort ( Gibson stated prior to release of film no one has done the revolution right. THIS AIN'T IT!) RED BADGE OF COURAGE-1974 Richard Thomas one of the few remakes that I like better then original. Others I'll just mention that are fantastic-GLORY,PHARAOH'S ARMY,GANGS OF NEWYORK (Civil War era NYC) ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT-1979 John boy Richard Thomas again. (Remake never seen silent original) PATTON,THE BIG RED ONE and of course SAVING PRIVATE RYAN- Honestly brutal graphic. Oh i might add COLD MOUNTAIN -good .book better! I'll think of more depending how thread goes. LIKE TO READ YOUR PICKS. Once again sorry if this topic already covered...
  20. QUOTE (Indica @ Jun 18 2005, 08:00 AM) Olivia newton John stole Xanadu from Rush. She changed the words and music a little bit but yea, its the same song. GOOD GRIEF!! As long as you don't say they ripped off RUSH for the horrible movie this soundtrack title came from I'll be able to sleep at night!!! (FYI) The movie is actually a updated rip-off of the old Rita Hayworth film "Down to Earth"
  21. QUOTE (dakota2112 @ Jun 17 2005, 12:13 PM)QUOTE (softfilter @ Jun 17 2005, 11:50 AM)Theres a couple I can think of that sound very similar to being a RUSH riff or rip off! The problem for me I can't remember the exact song just the group. A METALLICA song in the beginning sounds alot like end "Of the Battle" and the start of" Epilogue" segment of live Bytor from ATWAS. Another one by AUDIOSLAVE sounds like they were listening to VT. Theres some guitar work that sounds similar to One Little Victory. JUST CAN'T THINK OF THE DAMN SONGS!!! I've done this several times. I'll be listening to whatever, and something will strike me as sounding an awful lot like a certain Rush song... but I can never remember what it was I was listening to. I'll have to write it down next time so's I can remember. I don't know if this is right but the METALLICA song that sounds similar at the beginning like the middle of live Bytor from ATWAS is Astronomy? For some reason that title comes to mind. Not a METALLICA fan so not sure but I am sure heard this on radio several times and does sound like SICK OF HEARING METALLICA ON RADIO!!!

  23. Defending Your Life -Albert Brooks,Meryl Streep. (Wifes Favorite)
  24. Bringing Up Baby-Cary Grant and Katharine Hepburn
  25. QUOTE (pedro2112 @ Jun 14 2005, 07:50 PM) I cannot believe that Stripes nor Caddyshack haven't been mentioned. What about the all time classic, Animal House?? Yep,mentioned "Caddyshack" earlier in thread. Heres a few more that come to mind '"Out Of Towners" Original with Jack Lemmon and Sandy Dennis. "What About Bob?" Last funny Bill Murray performance. "Office Space" Mike Judge first real people movie (Looks like you missed alot of work. Wouldn't say I missed it!) And "Best in Show" the weird world and weird people of dog shows, same makers and performers from "SPINAL TAP" Waiting for Guffman and "A Mighty Wind" What makes all of these funny is you know people like this exist!!!
