  1. He killed it in Vegas.

Hell yeah he did. He held out the "wish that I could do it all again" like crazy and the crowd showed appreciation. The fact is that the guy is 62 (me thinks) years old and can't sing like he did when he was 24 but he's out there giving it his best. Name one singer that in his or her 60's that can sing like they did in their 20's.....

  2. All and all the entire rig was around 3 grand accumulated over a few years. Funny thing is, once the recession hit, I ended up selling most of this stuff. You don't have to spend three grand. The key is to use two amps - one clean and one dirty. Blend the two together to create the sound. You can use chorus on either amp or both but using it on the clean amp will give you more of a shimmer.
  3. As a young, cocky bass player (around age 13) I hung out with dudes that were much older than I was. I boasted that I could learn any song on bass from any artist and play that song from front to end. The older dudes schooled me by putting a YES song on the turntable. Can't remember which one but that is irreverent anyway. RIP Chris Squire.
  4. Thanks to all for the condolences. Sure is nice to have the support.

I find myself wanting to tell everyone that depression is a real sickness and that it should not be dismissed as easily as it is. I was the biggest offender. "What do you mean your depressed? You have a nice house, a car, loving family you don't have to work etc. What is there to be depressed about?". That was the old me. I'm generally a happy go luck person with a sick sense of humor that I often share at inappropriate times :) so it was hard to understand at first. All of you who are going through depression have my sympathy and I hope you STAY ON YOUR MEDS! and see your doctor regularly.

    Thanks again.

  5. I never understood depression until my wife went through it. I felt so bad for her and tried to help as much as I could. One of my biggest gripes was that when she would take the medicine that was prescribed to her, she was so much better. She was her usual, creative caring self. But due to the side effects, (weight gain & RLS specifically) she would go for months without taking her meds.

I miss my wife. She was very sick and she passed early December last year. The depression contributed to her unwillingness to go to the doctor to get the treatment that she needed.

  6. One of the key elements to the Alex sound is the way the amps are set up. Notice that he always uses at least two of the same amp, even back in the day. One amp is set up screaming hot while the other amp is set up to a cleaner tone. He would also send a direct signal to the house via a cranked twin reverb. Taken from an interview during the GUP time "Yeah, well, I think when you do that, when you get a combination of a few things, too often you mike 1 amp or you mike 2 amps or 3 amps but you set them up the same and you get 1 basic sound. But if you mix it up, you get 1 amp that’s really screaming and another amp that’s crystal clear that you would never think of using that sounds direct almost. Another amp has got maybe more bass to it.

Then something like the Rockman, it’s got that limited compressed sound to it and you can throw them all together. You have a sound that you can fool around with and play with. In some halls, you might push more of the direct sound. In other halls, you might pull the direct sound down a bit. I really think that’s the way to go, and that’s what we ended up doing on this record. I think on Grace Under Pressure, it was a more accurate live guitar sound than we’ve had in the past because we used different miking techniques and whole different approach to sound:.

  7. I have to disagree with you on this one. I think that a guitar with single coils in the neck and middle position will yield more the ambient sounds than say a double humbucker. Just my opinion.

Get yourself an old YamahaF500 fro Ebay. Great ambient sounds on that ting.

  8. I heard the commercial in Walmart as I was shopping. I stopped where I was and made a B-Line for the TV department. I was excited that the band that I love, the band that has changed my life was being featured in any way shape or form - especially something from their first album. Just like Narpzilla, I got goosebumps - I was proud. I thought of someone who had never heard Working Man thinking "Wow...that song kicks ass! I wonder who that is?"

Anyone who can't see this as a positive thing for they're favorite band (remember.....the band you spend 12 hours a day posting about....must be your favorite right?) is just a douche bag - plain and simple. You wouldn't be happy with the set list if Rush came to play your Birthday Party.

If you don't like Walmart, don't work or shop there. Don't hold your dislike for a store against your favorite band.
