  1. Another way of looking at that approach -- if I were looking to introduce somebody to Rush, what are the absolute last songs I'd recommend?
  2. Anywhere in the bottom-20 is fitting for that song. Would I recommend it to a Rush-curious person? Hell no.
  3. For me, if I were making a list (and maybe someday I will) I'd start from the bottom, and with one thought in mind: If I were to hear a Rush song and it was the first time I heard a song from them, would it encourage me to seek out more of their music? Obviously any song that answers to that would be at the bottom part of the list, and Half the World, Second Nature and Anagram would be in the bottom three spots.
  4. I'm apparently one of the few who really likes Peaceable Kingdom. It's a different song for them, but in a good way. Not sure I would have ranked Stick it Out and Out of the Cradle quite this low. There are other songs in their catalog that are far worse.
  5. I get the feeling my list wouldn't be too much different than yours. We'll see as you get further into it.
  6. No hate from me. My bottom-2 are included in your bottom-10, so you may continue your ranking. You came thiiiiiis close...
  7. This is exactly my approach to not only Rush, but music in general. I can look past meh lyrics if the music is engaging, and downright cringy lyrics can drag a good song down. It gets a little more complicated with prog bands like Rush and Yes because the lyrics are looking to be more thought-provoking than those you'd hear from KISS or AC/DC. So when you hear lyrics like on Virtuality and Half The World coming from a band with a history of good lyrics, you really notice them.
  8. I wouldn't mind seeing a JR list. It could be useful. You know when you're constipated and you need a little something to get things going?
  9. Half The World is a bottom-5 song for me as well -- bottom-3, actually. Which means there are two songs that are worse ... and they're not even in your bottom-5. Hmmm. This is quite vexing to me. I'm terribly vexed. Your bottom-5 are easily in my bottom-10. If my bottom-2 songs (and I'm sure you folks know which two they are) are not in your next five then we're going to have to insist on some sensitivity training for you.
  10. "One of the rare mellow tunes that we hardly ever get from Rush." I wouldn't describe this song as mellow, not at all. It has some mellow moments, certainly, but the verses have that jangly Led Zep rock thing going on, and Alex's solo is pretty good for early Alex. It's a Closer To The Heart-type of song that's easily digestible and has a little bit of everything. It's a song that I never seek out but won't skip if it comes up. The ranking seems about right.
  11. I'd like to be watching right now, but I have guys putting in a new deck on my front porch and every time they use the circular saw it dips the power to my TV and receiver and shuts them off.

  13. RIP to a legend. Was he the last of the great crooners?
  14. There's potential for a decent song here. The choruses are pretty good, but the verses are downright abysmal, dragged down by Geddy's inexplicable caterwauling -- I have no idea what he was thinking adopting that singing style. If you think the verses need that type of vocal treatment then it's time to completely rethink the music. I'd have ranked this lower.
  15. It's a pretty good instrumental that has the misfortune of being written and performed by the same band who did La Villa, YYZ, Leave That Thing Alone, etc.

  17. We all know that SOCN is TRF's designated cesspool. To those of you who do not have SOCN access, if you would like to continue to talk about political issues, consider sending me a PM asking for cesspool access. Otherwise, we -- meaning all of us -- should try and keep politics where it belongs.

  19. Would have been interesting to see what Eddie did with that. I'm kinda glad we didn't see that happen as the original is top notch, and I generally hate Motown covers.
  20. Mine too. I'm not a huge fan of any of the remakes that VH did after that, though "Where Have All The Good Times Gone" is pretty good.
  21. I hear you. Like a lot of guys back then I had a big crush on her, and she has a flawless voice. Your devout allegiance is well justified. But in the case of "You're No Good" I really like what VH did with it.
  22. Motown songs should be left alone. Those songs are all about melody and groove, and any of the remakes I've heard completely missed the point.
  23. Yep. Even though it's basically The Kinks' version turned up to 11, it still wins easily. And unlike "You Really Got Me," Eddie took Linda Ronstadt's "You're No Good" and turned a pretty good song into something different, and something way better.
  24. When did this formerly harmless thread turn into a satellite location of SOCN?
  25. Just to clarify my comment on Mellencamp's vocals in this song, I'm not saying his vocals are more impressive talent-wise than Benatar's -- they're not -- but they fit the music perfectly. His band is going pretty good in this tune. Benatar sings her ass off like she always does, but the music behind her is blah.
