  1. A friend of mine asked me for music recommendations a couple weeks ago. I sent her youtube links to Big Wreck, Porcupine Tree/Steven Wilson and Peter Gabriel. On Friday morning (before the horrible news broke) I sent her "Between The Wheels" just to see what she thought of it. The next day she asked me if I knew what happened before I sent the song. I did not. She had heard of Rush but never really listened to them. She could tell I was upset and that led to more conversation about Rush and Neil in particular. "You mean he wrote the lyrics???" Yes! She is currently a teacher but until recently she was a professional dancer. I sent her "Losing It" and 3 other Rush songs. I also included the link to the drum solo in Frankfurt someone posted on this thread. Her Response: "I've only listened to Losing It so far, but I'm crying. I'm not sure if it's the home hitting lyrics or the beyond exquisite music that put me in this place, but these words certainly started them flowing. f**k I miss my career. Sadder still to watch it die Than never to have known it For you, the blind who once could see The bell tolls for thee Drums...oh my god...my language...you're speaking....He's speaking! I think I just fell in love with Neil Peart. I mean it. I'm in a daze right now A beautiful god just left us" She gets it.
  2. The trick when anybody you love dies is to feel happiness at the memory rather than pain for the loss. Getting to that point isn't easy. It requires intention and time. You can't get around it, you have to go through it. Grieving is an important part of the process. Get drunk. Cry. Scream at the sky. It takes as long as it takes. Then be grateful and happy that you got to share the planet with them. That's the wisdom I've gathered in my time here. Hope it helps.
  3. I remember the first time I heard Rush. I was 13 years old (I'm 55 now). A friend shared a joint with me and said "Check this out". The song was Twilight Zone. I was hooked. I always had this fantasy that I'd meet Neil at a gas station or diner. I'd pretend I didn't know who he was and strike up a conversation about the weather or something. That will never happen now. I'm grateful I got to see him so many times. I don't have any Macallan so it's going to have to be bourbon. Rest in Peace.
  4. I wouldn't believe this if not for the video: Wedding band playing Emerson Lake and Palmer's Karn Evil 9 Third Impression.
  5. Found a clip of high school kids playing "Technical Difficulties" by Racer X. Why did I post it here? Check out the drummer. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X_0_gMhGInk
  6. I flew down to San Francisco to see the show last Thursday. First time I have ever flown to see a concert and I'm really glad I did. It was a great concert and an incredible bargain for the ticket. I didn't know that Marco would be there so that was a pleasant surprise. I wish I could see it again. Hoping SW releases a blu-ray of the show in the near future.
  7. He reminds me of the Korean version of Falco:

Forgive me if this is a repost. I just saw it on television and a search didn't get any results.
  12. I echo most of the other criticism. The constant RUSH lyric references were annoying. In the notes at the end Neil says that Kevin writes incredibly fast. I'm guessing that's because he doesn't put much thought into it. Some of the ideas in the book were very cool: The device that shows what's in your imagination for example. A lot of the book didn't make any sense. Owen was supposed to be this pivotal character but at the end he checked out and nothing changed. Why were the Watchmaker and the Anarchist bothering with him in the first place?
  13. He's only cut off in the thumbnail gallery. If you look at the nomination page the full photo is there.
  14. Forgive me if this is a duplicate post. The search function timed out. Geddy Interview http://www.cbc.ca/player/News/TV%20Shows/M.../ID/2277532785/
  15. She's a keeper all right.
  16. I think it was 2 1/2 hours with no breaks. Remainder the Black Dog and Raider 2... prepare to have your head blown off.
  17. A friend and I drove up to Seattle on Wednesday to see Steven Wilson perform. The tickets said 7:00pm. We walked from the hotel and got in line about 6:30. At 7:10 they opened the doors. The stage was shrouded by a transparent drape. At 7:30 a picture was projected on the drape in front of the stage and on the screen behind the stage. Hypnotic music started to come out of the PA system. Twenty minutes later they showed a new picture. Then 20 minutes later a different picture. We were all standing around wondering WTF??? Finally I complained to one of the security guys. He told me the show wasn't going to start until 9. So, for some reason, SW decided to make his fans stand around and watch 5 pictures for 2 hours. Not cool. I have no idea why he thought this was a good idea. Finally, around ten minutes after 9 the band hit the stage. They kicked serious ass. The mix was a little weird. The sax/flute player was fairly quiet while SW's guitar was twice as loud as anything else. Steven also spent a lot of the show sitting down playing keyboards. He was facing the audience but he had an Apple notebook computer sitting on the keyboard which blocked the view. It was almost like he was hiding. He also complained about being jet lagged and tired. I thought to myself "Well you could have started an hour earlier." At one point Steven mentioned what a great band he had. He said that because they were so good he had begun writing a 3rd album that was more complex. He said "I can't play it but they can." He then announced that they were going to do a new song but they would probably screw it up so don't upload it. The song was awesome and if they made a mistake I didn't notice. So, I highly recommend you go see him if you can. Just don't bother getting there until 9 unless you want to go really early to fight over a spot in front of the stage.

If you look back at this thread it was someone complaining about Neil's anti religious views that started the argument. If you want to really be offended watch this: How is it bullshit? You can see it happening here. Just look back through the thread. Why does someone who speaks positively about his faith in God need to be "called on it"? Why does someone's expression of Christian faith bother you so much? Neil's position is not just pro paganism, but also virulently anti-Christian. As per your news anchor analogy, I don't think there would be any outcry if Neil simply spoke positively from a materialist, pagan viewpoint. He's gone beyond that now to where he is effectively calling all Christian Rush fans idiots. Try this: Every time you hear someone on TV mention god substitute Allah.

  23. People that hate Porcupine Tree should be rounded up, herded into little camps and forced to listen to disco music until their ears turn black and fall off!
  24. At least Neil's lyrics mean something and you can generally understand him. Compare him to Led Zeppelin: "There's a lady who knows all that glitters is gold and she's buying a stairway to heaven." Huh? or Yes: "In and around the lake Mountains come out of the sky and they stand there"
