  1. The reasoning for the ban all sounds complicated to me and probably holds a lot more bias than can easily be parsed into right and wrong. What I can say though is Tik Tok has had a very strange effect on popular music the last five years or so, and while it hasn’t all been bad, there are definite negatives I wouldn’t be sad to see go. Not to mention I have a lot of skepticism towards the staying power of any art that goes viral on such a fickle and fast paced platform. Friends have told me Tik Tok is the future of music promo, I don’t think so. I think it’s a weird part of the present, and may quickly become part of the past.
  2. Pearl Jam - Dark Matter Yeah I’m sorry this just doesn’t do much for me. I like the opener pretty well, and like there’s nothing here I’d turn off if it came on the radio (not that I can hear like… *any* of this getting much airtime… where are the hooks?). The songwriting just doesn’t pull me in, and the production is so wrong for this kind of band. You know what a great PJ record *sounds* like? It sound like Vs. Or like Vitalogy. Those records had character without having to try too hard either. I get if they want to chase a new sound, but I ain’t hearing any really new musical ideas to back up that decision either. Everything sounds too compressed, nothing breathes, and nothing surprises me. Again. I don’t hate it, but there’s shockingly little here that I really care about at all.
  3. You know I’m a sucker for good backing vox. Man she’s incredible. She and Olivia should work together honestly. Idk what it would sound like but it just couldn’t be average.
  4. YES!! I have no idea where the negativity towards her originates. This is pop music at its best. Forward thinking, relatable, sing able, impressive, and backed with some actual quite classic ideals (Billie Bossa anyone?) Plus the girl can SING. She might be the best vocalist in the top 40 right now.
  5. Not just any pop acts either. He’s a tried and true hit maker. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andrew_Watt_(record_producer) Apparently he also plays guitar in Eddie’s solo backing band, so that’s probably got something to do with his presence here.
  6. His vocals were super processed and unnatural sounding on Hackney Diamonds. The dynamics were all off, the pitch felt too on the nose, and overall there was this layer of effects to it that felt really out of place, like I was listening to AI Mick. If you can’t hear all of that then I’m glad you get to enjoy an album I can’t.
  7. This is the Hackney Diamonds guy? I literally was thinking of comparing the production weirdness on Eddie’s vox to Mick’s from that album yesterday. Wow. My ears must be better than I thought lol. I was not a fan of how that last Stones album sounded, and Mick’s voice was a big reason why. This one isn’t as bad as that, but it’s not great. Side note though, and this could be nostalgia talking, but I remember really enjoying Lightning Bolt when it came out. Those were just better written songs I think. I still remember the singles well, and I haven’t heard them in years.
  8. I’ll listen at least one more time, but I didn’t hear anything on this one as good as Sirens personally.
  9. Same with Astral Weeks, and a case can be made for street choir.
  10. Why do they call him Van the Man? More like Van the can!
  11. The nihilist in me says most likely he’s actually been using it for a while and it’s just never been noticeable before (I’ve heard the number of pro singers not using it at all these days is shockingly few, and has been for a long while). Less likely he botched a take that bad and more likely the engineer got too heavy handed with the software in post. How that passed the smell check with Eddie though I have no idea.
  12. I don’t mind triggered drums really. I get it, some drum sounds just don’t exist otherwise and are desirable. But pitch correcting Eddie Vedder and allowing it to be noticeable? Why? Like, if he missed a note here or there and you can make it subtle enough that I can’t tell you fixed it, sure. But it was all over that track and not hiding very well, and also not really blatant enough to sound like it’s being used for the effect… also why would you use that effect on Ed’s voice? Like. Have you heard him sing? Digital effects do not mix well with that instrument imo.
  13. Pearl Jam - Dark Matter Another Sky - Beach Day Liked the new PJ. I never spun Gigaton, so I guess I’ll have to go back and try that one too. One thing though, the vox on track two sounded a little off to me… sorta autotuned? Idk. Otherwise it’s a good song, but there’s something really off putting about Eddie Vedder going through any kind of pitch correction.
  14. Upcoming song vs song matchup on my favorite podcast. Thought this would be a fun one to pitch on here. Which one do you prefer? And why?
  15. Another Sky - Beach Day I’m spinning this on a daily basis. This is my current aoty fav. There’s so much depth and beauty in this record, and despite a pretty cohesive sonic palette I’m still getting surprised how very different some songs are from each other. Like, there’s everything here from Big Thief to Portishead, and it’s really not that hard to hear the variety but somehow it all blends together seamlessly. I think my favorite songs right now are the title track, A Feeling, and Death Of The Author, but I’d be hard pressed to pick any lowlights here. Every song belongs and the sequencing is flawless as well.
  16. Jacob Collier - Djesse Vol. 4 Okay I’m not as blown away the second time as I was the first, but like, I definitely do enjoy this.
  17. Cloud Nothings - Final Summer Will I probably go see them live when they roll through town next month? Yeah. Does this record excite me? No not really. Just some solid melodic punk rock. I hear Pixies a bit.
  18. lol, well when you feel like stepping in, the water’s warm and relaxing.
  19. Another Sky Just discovered them last week, their new album has been really speaking to me.
  20. I suppose all the other great metal bands would be sorely missed if they all just stopped now, lol. Unrelated, I think you should check out the other album I posted today. Beach Day by Another Sky. I think you might enjoy it, very beautiful 90s influenced rock with gorgeous ethereal vox.
  21. Judas Priest - Invincible Shield I feel like there’s no reason for anyone else to write any new metal when JP do this, lol. Like, what’s there left to say? I kid, of course.
  22. After some consideration I’ve actually decided to hold off listening to this for a while. Not because I expect it to disappoint me in any way, just because it sounds like a really heavy emotional experience from everything I’m hearing about it, and I really need to avoid that for a while. Trying to keep to music that comforts and brightens me for a while. But I’m excited for when I am ready for it.
