  1. QUOTE (fledgehog @ Aug 28 2006, 09:51 PM) I now know what DVD I'm getting after score: That would be Images & Words live in Tokyo http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x-P2gDZjGeU ^^that just gave me chills. That's about the same show I saw them play a few times when they first started touring (like 4 shows in a year), when James joined. They started every show with Metropolis (my fav) and it was definately a spine-chilling show! I'd highly recommend that dvd. It has 5 years in a livetime on it, too. Great price as well!!!!
  2. Howz the new DVD? My guitarist went to that show in NY & said it was incredible. I can't wait to buy and watch it, but I've had band practice every single night. Any reviews? I haven't had time to read the posts. Tick, I'm sure you've watched it, eh? Thanks -TMD
  3. Well, I used to love "don't fear the reaper" when I was a kid. Then, in 1998, my old band had the good fortune to open for Blue Oyster Cult in concert. Those guys wouldn't even make eye contact with us or talk to us. That sucks. How cool is that? I think they're somewhat broke and miserable these days...
  4. QUOTE (tick @ Jul 27 2006, 07:01 AM) QUOTE (the_masked_drummer @ Jul 27 2006, 07:42 AM) Listen to Magnum Opus if you're a non-believer. That tune totally kicks butt! I have a guitarist friend that says Kerry Livgren is the man. On their DVD Voice, Device, Drum they utilize animation on "miracles out of nowhere" which has to be seen to be believed. It's like this musical creature that plays all of the parts at once, even drums, in perfect time with the live band. Really creative awesome stuff! Anyone else seen this DVD? It's cool cuz Robbie Steinhardt is back with the band now. im a huge kansas fan as some of you know. the dvd, "device, voice, drum" is incredible and will make you a fan if your not already. sadly though robby has once again exited the band and has been repaced by david ragsdale who was with the band throughout the 90's and into this century. believe me this guy is no slouch. kansas is currently touring and will play b.b. kings in new york on aug.7th. well worth checking out. Thanks Tick, I didn't know Robbie left again. I agree in that Ragsdale cat is damn good, too. Saw him with those guys a couple times in the 90's.

  6. QUOTE (tangdog @ May 25 2006, 12:05 PM) Disco, give Liquid Tension Experiment a try if you have not so yet. Many consider a Change of Season to be DT's best epic. The remainder of that disc is covers but still worth checking out. From Awake, I recommend Scarred. from Images and Words, - Under a glass moon has an unbelievable solo in it. Disco, TangDog knows what he's talkin about. Under a Glass Moon is a great, original tune and has a sweet solo.
  7. QUOTE (Disco @ May 25 2006, 06:55 AM) Thanks for the tip. I've just listened to Metropolis and I'm, well, exhausted... Just listen to it a few times and it'll grow on you. When I first listened to it, it wore me down. Once you start to digest all it's complexities, you might start to love it like I did.
  8. QUOTE (Disco @ May 25 2006, 05:33 AM) OK, seeing the love for Dream Theater on this board I've bought an MP3 with the following albums on it. Could you old hands let me know which album, or even better which song, I should start with? Thanks Falling into infinity Live at the Marquee A Chang of Season Awake Images & Words Live at USA Once in a Live Time Liquid Tension Experiment Love to all Disco Metropolis off images and words is my fav DT song. Which album? Depends on what you like. If you really like metal, Train of THought is good. If you like concept albums then Scenes from a Memory is good. Images and Words is a good starting point. That's their first album with their current singer...
  9. QUOTE (the_masked_drummer @ May 16 2006, 12:28 PM) When I saw them do Glass PRison live for the first time on their 7doit tour, I loved the tune but didn't know it was written about Portnoy's alcoholism. I think he's been doing great ever since. Now if he could just quit doing fat chunky rails of cola he'd settle down a little bit. lol I just saw Danny Carey for the first time last night and I'd say Portnoy roasts his ass, but that's just my opinion. Danny has a great style, though. One of the best, for sure.

  11. QUOTE (YYXanadu @ May 15 2006, 08:02 PM) Okay. Quick question. In the beginning of The Glass Prison, from SDoIT, is there a strange "rain" sound? It almost sounds like rain, but it just sounds terrible. I'm just asking to see if my CD is messed up. I think that's just white noise from a tone generator as a special effect. Your CD isn't messed up.
  12. QUOTE (tangdog @ May 15 2006, 08:35 PM) The Glass Prison and Panic Attack will be included in the forthcoming Gigantour DVD per Mike Portnoy. So will Cemetary Gates!!! source That's good news, cuz Glass Prison isn't on any DVD's yet. Sweet!
  13. IMHO of why DT gets ragged on I always find myself trying to come up with possible reasons why. I guess if I wasn't a musician I would find DT terribly hard to digest and maybe get a headache from it. I think I'm able to feel it cuz I'm not overwhelmed by the advanced musicianship. Anyone agree? It's kinda like if your degestive system could only handle veggies and you tried to eat a bigass plate of Lobster and Prime Rib or something and got sick from it. Anyone that hates DT is OK with me, but I just love em.
  14. QUOTE (kazzman @ May 5 2006, 04:33 PM) I'm completely addicted to As I Am, Panic Attack and The Root of All Evil. I take back everything I said about DT in the past. Call me a hippocrite or a traitor if you like, but I'm really digging these guys now. I'm with ya. "As I Am" is a jam and a half. I watched the Portnoy DVD of his studio takes on drums for that song (and the 2nd track) and it fukkin rocks! THe DVD is only 20 bucks and worth every penny to be a fly on the wall for Mike's actual drums parts. I'm a drummer, so maybe I'm biased, but I played it for some friends last night and they seemed entertained...
  15. BTW Tick, that's a sweet gif you have now!
  16. QUOTE (Chimique @ Dec 9 2005, 05:10 PM) QUOTE (tick @ Dec 9 2005, 03:45 PM)cant we all just get along. I agree with you, Tick. We all need to just get along... Give Peace A Chance fukk getting along. My fav thing on this board is having DT insults hurled around. I think it's great. It shows people's true colors and is funny how someone could passionately hate a band so much. For me, DT was recommended by my bassist in 1990 cuz he knew I loved Rush. I laid there with my eyes closed on his parent's library floor with him and listened to the entire "when dream and day unite" album and totally loved it. The way I saw their music was stimulated my musical mind. I like some bands, don't care for others, but Rush was the first band that really fed my mind. Being a musician to me is like being a spoiled kid that doesn't really appreciate his regular toys. Metaphorically now, if you throw a snowmobile or a minibike into my toybox, then I'm lovin it. Those toys would be like listening to Rush. When DT came along, it was like getting a dune buggy thrown into my toybox. By dune buggy, I mean another new kewl toy that could satisfy my hunger that previously only Rush could satisfy. So DT expanded my spoiled rotten toybox beyond what toys Rush had brought me, so I was excited beyond belief. When I praise DT I'm wanting to share the toys I love with other people so they might get the same thrill I get. Now if I share my dune buggy with someone and they say they hate it and just want to ride the snowmobile, then I feel bad for them but I respect that maybe they don't like getting sand blown in their face and would rather just eat snow! lol...
  17. QUOTE (Mental Vortex @ Apr 6 2006, 08:48 PM) Blue Oyster Cult last Saturday and Buckcherry last night. Both great shows. Pics of the BOC show and a short review are here: http://www.solarfederation.net/images/conc...6/04_01/boc.htm I was in a band a few years ago that warmed up for Blue Oyster Cult and the band would not even make eye contact with us. I wasn't very impressed. The thing that WAS cool, though, was I got to meet the stage tech that was pictured on Rush's All The World's A Stage album artwork. I recognized him right away. I asked him if that was a joint hanging from his beard and he said people have been asking him that since 1976. That was around 1998, so the guy must have been on the road with BOC while Rush was on hiatus. I don't know his name, but I know he wasn't Skip Gildersleeve. Skip has had short hair for years now...
  18. QUOTE (Grandpa Grizz @ Oct 24 2005, 02:18 PM) I'll tell you what little I remember of The Jimi Hendrix Experience, Dallas, April, 1969. We lived in Fort Worth, and my parents took us to the venue, and later picked us up. I was with my brother and sister. We were in the nosebleed seats, but center. The opening act was Chicago Transit Authority (Chicago) with lots of musicians and tons of horns. They were great! Then The Experience took the stage. There were only three of them, but they were HUGE! Don't even ask me what they played. But it was the Electric Ladyland Tour, so they had a sizable catalog to draw from. It was, simply put, amazing. There would be all these overlayed sounds, and you would look at Jimi and he was playing behind his back, or with his teeth. At one point he said, "Sorry I'm so LOUD!" Then he launched into another song and bumped up the volume. The crowd went nuts. I was on nothing, but I was hallucinating after the show. I will never forget that concert. Jeez, I'm jealous as heck, myself. What a priveledge!
  19. QUOTE (the_masked_drummer @ Apr 12 2006, 01:02 PM) QUOTE (piledriver @ Apr 11 2006, 03:39 PM) I hope I don't make this post too long but here goes: I saw the band only once. It was at the Michigan Palace in Detroit MI, and I know for fact it was in 1975 (Fly By Night tour). Rush headlined for Status Quo. At first I thought it was on April 13th but I think Quo were in Grand Rapids MI on that evening. Many websites state that Rush were support for Kiss that evening, but other websites state that Kiss were in Missouri that evening. The Michigan Palace only seats about 4200 and I know it's a longshot, but I have to ask anyways, anybody on the board see that concert with Quo? Or can someone please shed some light on this? thanks A guy here at work was at a show with Rush & Kiss and Savoy Brown, but it was In Wyandotte at the Yack Arena. Kiss played The Michigan Palace on 4/12 -4/13 1974 according to kissonline.com, but that would have been too early for fly by night. I'm sure they were playing fly by night tunes by then 'cause neil was in the band. hmmm Kiss played the northland arena in 4/4/75 though. Could it have been then? I see Aerosmith played the Michigan Palace on 4/12/74. Could it be that Rush played as a warmup for aerosmith and kiss? I know rush did a lot of shows with kiss back then.. I'm full of it. I can't confirm whether Rush was with them at the yack arena. I guess there was another band, but the dude was on microdot so he doesn't remember...
  20. I've found two sites that confirm the April 13, 1975 date for both Kiss and Rush as warmup at Michigan Palace, but not on the 12th

  22. Sampling is stealing. Period. That would be no different than writing a book and sticking pages from another author's book into your book and calling it original. That's not art, in my opinion, it's highway robbery. Why can't they at least try to re-record what the original artist did. That way, at least they worked a little bit for it, even though they're still stealing?! My new band covered "push it" by salt n pepa, but at least we're buying the rights to it, legally so we can publish it. Here come the arguments...
  23. So what if Uncle Tedly hunts? Colonel Sanders murders seven million chickens a day and no one bitches about that! Anyone else going to see Ted on April 30th? No, not in concert, as a keynote speaker at the PMPA conference in Dearborn, Michigan. I've gotta go for work. I wonder if anyone will bring in guitars for him to autograph? I should get all drunk and blow whiskey breath in his face. No, Ted's OK, I just can't stand his huge ego. Hope he's hungry so he shuts up during the dinner there...
  24. QUOTE (tangdog @ Apr 3 2006, 12:59 PM) QUOTE (the_masked_drummer @ Apr 3 2006, 10:18 AM) QUOTE (Larks @ Apr 3 2006, 09:07 AM) oh yeah it will be a kick ass dvd!(little dissapointet they didnt play TTT) 6DOIT with full orchestra. what more can i ask? U shoulda seen take the time back when they were young and hungry. It just aint the same any more. The '93 Japan video kinda captures it, but there's been nothing like seeing them do it live from about '92-'94. To me, once Kevin Moore quit, they lost an element that's never been replaced. Derick was great and Jordan rules, but they just had this chemistry when Kevin was in the band. I don't know if anyone agrees with that, but there was nothing like seeing DT play Metropolis pt1 back when they first got James Labrie in the early nineties IMHO. I have read that that it was the entire second set and encore that the orchestra performed for. In general I don't go for the orchestra/ band collaboration but am curious what this sounds like. Especially Matropolis Part 1. It would be nice if you could select "fukk that orchestra" option on the audio options menu... lol
