Question for guitarists in re Alex
TheWinslowOfWillowdale replied to TheWinslowOfWillowdale's topic in Rush
Right.....Roll your "r" while saying the word, "trill", and you'll vocalize the sound of the effect such technique elicits when performed on the guitar..... -
Question for guitarists in re Alex

So here, at 3:27 Alex opens w/ quick alternate picking.....And at 3:47, it sounds like he switches between alternate picking and tremolo picking?: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jsTxxPOqzc4 -
Question for guitarists in re Alex
TheWinslowOfWillowdale replied to TheWinslowOfWillowdale's topic in Rush
It's basically flicking your pick down and up as rapidly as possible whilst alternating frets w/ your left hand.....If you aren't vey good at alternate picking, you can employ this technique to run through scales giving the impression that you're actually more skilled than you really are..;) -
Question for guitarists in re Alex

What would you call it? My guitar teacher called this style of picking "trilling" back when I took lessons years and years ago......You're a jackass btw. -
Question for guitarists in re Alex
TheWinslowOfWillowdale replied to TheWinslowOfWillowdale's topic in Rush
I consider Eddie's technique here at 4:28 trilling: Eddie doesn't do this when he runs though scales ... it's just a "speed trick" that he usually employs on one string when he concludes a solo. Obviously here, he's using it as part of his overall showcase.....But keep in mind this trick can be used to entirely run through a scale to give the impression that one is actually proficiently alternate picking.....I know, that's how I tend to run through scales, and to the novice ear, it goes unnoticed.....;) -
Question for guitarists in re Alex
TheWinslowOfWillowdale replied to TheWinslowOfWillowdale's topic in Rush
What about here?: Go to about 3:05 or 3:06. He's goes into a real fast "scaley" run. Trilling or precise alternate picking?? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AHOoS2H1nvU -
When Alex runs quickly through scales.....is he "trilling" or actually playing each note once at a time? For instance, in his lighting fast run in La Villa, is he fudging through the scale, flipping his pick up and down as fast as possible, or actually methodically hitting each successive note at extreme velocity?? I'm a guitarist, and have always wondered this.....

Did Alex rip off the ending riff in Xanadu
TheWinslowOfWillowdale replied to losingit2k's topic in Rush
No mistaken it.....That whole song sounds like Xanadu sped up. I like the slow downed version better.....;) -
That show always has good interlude music.....

:goodone: :goodone: :goodone: Well IMHO, he's mastered "lyrical" prose....And writing that is critiqued as overly detailed can be interpreted as dense....Perhaps we'll get some novels from Neil, when Rush retires......
-
Careful...some people might get freaked out by that. Yeah, he just shy.

Meant: The Wreckers.

Um, The Breakers? "All I know is that memory can be too much to carry .... striking down like a bolt from the blue...." We're talking choruses here right?

Being the best lyricist and drummer in the world. Highly debatable Of course it is......It's my subjective standpoint. But objectively, there is at least a broad consensus that he is at the top in both categories.

Neil, like my myself, is simply shy. Shy people tend to have anxiety to a certain degree. But a lot of us overcome it when we have to. I'm an attorney, and have to engage in public speaking quite often. I was always shy as a kid, but had to gain comfort in the public arena when I had to accomplish something that I desired. I still get nervous before a speaking engagement and always will. Shy and introverted people will always have nervousness, and it's a daily struggle.....but it can be overcome.....Unfortunately, some of us do self medicate w/ alcohol and other substances to calm ourselves, or to reward ourselves after "victoriously" making it through a stressful transaction....I have always identified w/ Neil. I just wish I was as smart as him!!!! :codger:

I think most would agree that Neil has mastered prose; however, most also aren't interested in such mastery when it's densely drawn out....;)

RS Readers' Poll Ten Best Prog Albums of the 1970s
TheWinslowOfWillowdale replied to Powderfinger's topic in Rush
Just glad to see the boys getting props in any way, shape or form ... after all these years!! -
I agree w/ the above interpretations....This song came out when I was 16, and made me more self aware of the highschool charade....It was nice to know that others out there (Neil, for instance) felt as I. The man is brilliant. Great song, from a great (and much underrated) album!!

Absolutely, 100%, no questions asked: Lessons. It made me want to hear what Alex had to say for the rest of my life.....BTW -- his tone had/has never been better!

The creation of the Universe happened.... "Presto".... via the Big Bang. The whole record has scientific themes. I just missed the "biggest" one. I love Rush.
