  1. And all of what Rush stood for - the individual standing up in the face of the masses and rejecting the pressure of conformity - all that flew out the window ..

I don't see it that way. I see three guys who claim they weren't metal just maturing, growing up, experimenting. They were never hit makers.

This exactly. I always saw Rush as trying new things(even in the 70's), maybe to fit in better maybe to try new technologies, I bet they did gain a lot of new fans in the 80s. I would rather have a band try new things and fail than be stuck in the decade they began.

  2. Ha I posted that before reading Tony R's reply

But in all seriousness, I've been a fan since the age of 10, 1975, not the debut year but close, and I love something from every decade, but truly for me the music speaks to me as much today as when I first heard them, I never tire of the variety that they have brought to my musical life, and their songs are the only thing that carry me along some days.

  3. Personally, I'm looking forward to reading it. I've read and own all of Neils books and I have always enjoyed them. The travel descriptions are fascinating to me.

Because I don't travel I do like Neil's descriptions in his books as well

  4. I don't know why this thread doesn't show up when I click "new content". I had no idea anyone had posted here in the last day or so. Sigh.

Anyway....here's a couple of mine from last summer in Buffalo.

You must have had better seats or a better camera than I in Buffalo, great pics...I would have liked to have met you.

  5. I recently discovered that I need to wear glasses on a regular basis, and with me having long hair and a bit of bum fluff underneath my bottom lip which I really should shave off, I kinda look like Geddy Lee...which is not good. I should rethink my current style.

But, but...how is that not a good thing? I think that Geddy has fantastic style (especially present-day)!

Would you be saying that if you weren't a Rush fan and were looking at him for the first time?

Geddy Lee looked incredibly good in the 90's and onwards; I think he was hotter in his 40's than his 20's. While I don't think I would've found him stylish in his younger years (because I didn't), I do think that once he let his hair down again, he went from acquired taste to universally pleasant taste. Got better at wearing clothes that fit, too.

So if Ged was just some guy I saw out on the street, I still think I'd find him pretty cute.

    edit: yeah

I agree I think when he it his 40's he really came into his own, but to be honest, I married a man that looks/looked similar to Geddy(alot less now then 20 years ago), so I guess I've always thought he was good looking.

  6. Geddy was always trying something new and different on stage. He seemed to come alive and take on a different persona when he hit the stage. Like I said yesterday, the man was born to be a performer. He's more than a musician.

It's funny you say that. They've always struck me as a band that doesn't really have any kind of persona. Geddy was never good at "stage rapping" and connecting with the audience between songs.

I kind of agree they do not connect with the audience between songs, but I think they do their connecting during the songs

  7. I think it is kind of naive to think the insurance didn't know he rode from show to show.....

I used to live around where he crashed, those roads can be treacherous in a car let alone a motorcycle, and it isn't because of gravel in the road...

  8. 1. My friend played Fly By Night for me when I was 10(it was their newest album), something about how different the music and Geddy's voice, yes Geddy's voice pulled me in

    2. 2112 came out and the same friend invited me over to listen to it, it cemented me as a fan, loved the story line(I didn't read Ayn Rand till after I was a Rush fan, see rock can expand your horizons)

    3. the lyrics and music and even the guys are all irreplaceable, there is a kind of magic the way it all works in my ears, mind and eyes, are the lyrics sometimes lacking, maybe, but the music fills in the gaps and carries me along. To just read the lyrics isn't enough, even now when I read them I hear the music in my head. The music is great but the lyrics crystallizes the thoughts.

  9. All I can say is that they are the most important band to have come along in my lifetime. One of two, anyway, in that respect.

As much as I love them, it's always good to take a break and listen to other things- as there is so much other good music in the world, too.

I don't know if I can agree with the idea that they have something to offer everyone, because I know some people who can't stand them. (But that's their loss, as far as I'm concerned).

There will never be another. Bless 'em.

Totally agree that they are not for everyone, but for me, they seem to resonate consistently with my mood.

  10. No matter what my mood there's almost always something to suit. Honestly is there any other band in history you could say that about?

    Yes there is.

Not only do they have a song for any mood I'm in but over the last 40 years I can honestly say they have a song for any age I was in as well...God I love this band!

  11. As others have stated - so much to love about this show. The setlist, the reverse chronological theme, the stage set up, the lights, the video presentations, the vintage drum set, the orchestral chimes, the double necks, the sound was GREAT, Geddy sounded GREAT singing, etc. etc.

Only minor gripes - didn't get to see Losing It (with it played so infrequently, but I understand with the logistics of having a guest), TFE was not represented (should have had one tune!), and Alex did not smile as much as he did on past tours.

A few of my favorite moments though, at least in the stage show - the opening video was my favorite ever, and I enjoyed the exit video as well ("F you puppet!") and also the incredibly awesome lasers during the end of Cygnus X-1

Holy shit, I hadn't seen those before! That is so amazingly wonderful! Wow!

I can't wait for the R40 DVD to come out so I can see what else I've been missing.

The one downfall to having great seats for every show, eh? From what I'm told, you really needed to be towards the back of the venue to have the best view of the light show. I regret not making it a point to get a seat towards the back for one show. Howard really out did himself on this tour.

Crap! There was a light show too?

One drawback for having totally awesome seats. We didn't get the entirety of the light show. I still take the seats I had

I'm not complaining, and I feel a little awkward in the smugness of my comment, but I have to say that the show is much prettier on the DVD than it was up close. The light show is amazing, really just captivating.

It was Live too. Glad I finally decided it was worth it to go to multiple shows, I'll be paying for them for awhile, but damn it 2 still wasn't enough, kwim?

I was super lucky in that I had one show front row, and one show far enough back to enjoy the light, yeah, best show ever.

I get choked up thinking about the montage of Geddy saying "good night" over the years.

  13. I have been listening to :rush: as my favorite band for some 36 odd years now. It still seems I find new and undescoverd items akin to easter eggs in all the material I listen too. Some times it is a subtle chord pattern or underlying inuendo, guitar riff, bass line or synth effect. There will be times the lyrical tonality and delivery changes my interpretation from how it was to how it is. Sometimes it is as simple as what mood I am in when listing to a certain song that reflects how I hear and digest the material or what chord it strikes in my soul that relates to what is going on in my life at the time. Their music is like a fine tapistry so keenly crafted, patterns of bright flashes and soft hues layered with richness and depth. This is why :rush: will always be my favorite band.

    :Alex: :Neil: :geddy:

    Rock On!!

Well said and very very true!

  14. "Some are born to rule the world to live their fantasy"

(I found this written down in one of my sketch books, from back in the day)

Actually there are so many Rush lyrics that would be awesome, I don't think you can go wrong

  15. yeah, pretty much the reason I became a Rush fan...and continue to be one, too many to mention really, but honestly I don't know that it would have the same impact without the music underlying it all, it pretty much is a package deal for me, it would not be the same with another vocalist, or drummer or guitarist...you get the picture

  16. Damn, does this mean he was in my neck of the woods and I missed him?

You know one time I could have sworn I saw his bike go down the street past me while I was walking(not many times I see 2 BMW bikes in my parts), it was right after I saw a show and I shook my head and said no way...well I should have walked one more block because he mentions eating at a restaurant down the street in one of his books...oy...so close, yet so far.
