  1. Appreciate your post, but have to disagree with part of it. The System Has Failed, Endgame, Th1rt3en and Dystopia are all fantastic. Musically speaking they still rip. Lyrics were huge to me with early deth and I can't relate to Dave anymore. No need to elaborate why. I like parts of the system has failed. Back in the day!
  2. So you go biking and skiing? Where the mountains? Yeah, lived in the mtns since the early 80s. I need gravity and love both mtn biking and telemark skiing.
  3. Isn't that song pretty much loved by the entire fan base? I've never seen any dislike for it. Great tune. Imo their best album art ever too.
  4. Nice to see the love for ACOS. What a great song.
  5. Ground breaking VS money making Post youthanasia is as bad as asia.... When peace sells came out it appealed to me in the same way old rush did. Sick energy. To this day, wake up dead is my fave song pre biking or skiing tune.
  6. Yep , I agree with pretty much all of that To follow up on the first record bit. Usually there was a reason why it was the first one you heard. Back in the day it was hearing something on the radio or reading about it. Probably the biggest influence was a trusted musical friend and a recommendation, followed by "if you don't like this one, you probably won't like anything by them" I think it gets even deeper than that. I do find myself gravitating towards the first albums I heard by many bands, even when they're not the obvious consensus first choice (The Yes Album over CTTE, War over The Joshua Tree, The Resistance over Origin Of Symmetry, Crystal Ball over The Grand Illusion, Wasting Light over The Color And The Shape, Animals over DSOTM, The Bends over OK Computer.... though perhaps not coincidentally I heard almost all of those records for the first time over a single summer from early high school). I think there's something about that first time you connect with a new band that's makes it a very difficult threshold for anything else to pass, unless that first album you hear is just obviously not one of the artist's better efforts. Interesting exception for me: Queen. Maybe it doesn't really count since my first Queen album was probably technically their greatest hits, which exposed me to at least one track from every album between Queen II and Hot Space, so I already had this notion about which songs I liked better than others and what their evolution over those first album might be a bit like. But I then went through the studio albums one at a time over the course of four years in chronological order, and my favorite came out to be A Night At The Opera, which I had anticipated from the singles being, if not their best, at least one of their best. The debut was awesome, but easily middle of the pack for me by the time I got through all the albums. Great post, lots to consider about how music appeals to us. Nothing better in my experience than to get in early with an up and coming band, love them to the crest of the commercial success and the start bitching about them selling out!
  7. How do you like Colors 2? Only heard a little bit thus far. Probably buy it eventually.
  8. Without question for me it's the first record. If the first record sucks I have rarely given a group a second try. Sometimes other records are better than the first I heard My first and still fave Genesis-trick of the tail Megadeth- peace sells Rolling stones- some girls Dream theater- I&W Talking heads - remain in light Public enemy- nations of millions Red hot chile peppers- uplift mofo party plan Between the buried and me- colors Etc etc etc Others I can't recall what I heard first but in general: The younger they were the harder they rocked Last records are rarely if ever the best Usually the more a records sells, the more it sucks. Of course there are exceptions.
  9. Hard to take photos through pungent dense clouds of smoke?
  10. Holy shit, scrolling back to 2009 in this thread was trip. My last DT show. My son's first ever show at age 11. 3rd row prog nation. Can't figure out how to insert the pic but was it was a cool gesture they did every show that tour.
  11. Defeated once again by Modern tehcnology! D'oh
  12. They might rotate a few songs every other show but it pretty much stays the same. Like how Rush would do song rotation. Years ago when Portnoy was in charge of the set he would change it for every show. Fun for the fans since they didn't know what they were getting but not as fun for James who didn't know what he would be singing at each show. Well that falls right in line with the usual story about Portnoy generally not being fair to LaBrie about his voice. Man, James must be relieved anymore he doesn't have to put up with that. The rotating set does sound cool though. It was. Consideration was given to each city and what was played there last time. Like the Grateful Dead, some people would see multiple shows per tour. I definitely side with MP. 5 years off might of helped. Best band with worse singer. Labrie is obsolete in modern metal imo.
  13. First time I saw them Anthony still came out in the head dress for Fight Like a Brave. Think it was Mother's Milk tour. Saw them at Brixton Academy on Blood Sugar tour & that place nearly collapsed. It was bouncing. After that they became a stadium act. Still love 'em though. I saw mothers milk at brixton academy. It was killer. Saw BSSM tour in Colorado with smashing pumpkins as openers. Gave up on after one hot moment. Freaky stuley and uplift are my faves
  14. I am not much of a pat fan. Pre mtv is ok. Her mtv videos were terrible imo. My question is her husband being inducted too? He was a huge part of her sound and a pretty decent guitarist.
  15. Agreed. Rather ridiculous. Well Madonna has sold over 250 million records vs pats 35 million records. According to a quick search. Case closed
  16. The In Absentia deluxe from a couple years ago is good, and fairly cheap. The surround wasn't bad in the original DTS, so for me the alt versions and in progress versions of the songs, as well as a couple that didn't make the record, is the true worth in that particular set. My price point is $100 or less. I mostly buy them for surround mixes that are bundled, and only sometimes distributed separately. Exception is SW's Hand Cannot Erase, which is a true piece of art with the book that I rather enjoy. There has to be something significant about the release for me to spend more than $20 on new/re-released music. If you are into lynyrd skynyrd, Wal mart used sell the a greatest hit package with one disc in surround sound. A regular CD and a DVD of the Grey whistle test. Price was around $10! Not into Ssynyrd, but Queen has a best of in the same type of packaging still available through Amazon. Great surround mixes for $15 shipped. Thanks but I am not into surround sound! Or at least my stereo isn't. skynyrd is a top 5 group for me. Great lyrics. The queen package sounds good. I appreciate the recommendation.
  17. I am sorry. Beck is a joke. Thank Goodness Jeff Beck got in the Hall back in 2009! I kind of like him but his father is the man.
  18. De Do Do Do... Sappy but not the high fructose found on synchronicity. We all know his greatest and most heart felt love song is be my girl - sally. That was Andy. The only track one might call a "love song" on Synchronicity is Wrapped Around your Finger, I guess. Hardly high fructose, considering the lyrics and Sting's explanation of the song as "a spiteful song about turning the tables on someone who had been in charge." Every Breath You Take isn't a love song, as we all know. So the lyrics were Andy but the music was sting? The poetry was Andy's Thanks Kind of changes the way I think about him! LOL Andy, older than Sting and Stewart, was a member of the psychedelic band Dantalian's Chariot. His guitar work was distinct, even then. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fKyNxjiBR1U Far out. I liked it. Thanks
  19. That’s a rather sexist nickname for Dolly Parton, isn’t it? ;) My inner Beavis and butthead approve of this post. Dolly is just an awesome person. She is super charitable and her best one imo is that she gives books to children. Check it out https://imaginationlibrary.com/
  20. Rage against the machine made one really incredible record than faded fast in my eyes.

  22. Triumph has a bunch of great songs. Their performance at the US festival was stellar. Likely the best performers at the fest.
