  1. QUOTE (pdurbin22 @ Jul 27 2012, 10:06 AM) With 19 studio albums and counting, not every song can be a common "classic." Here's my list of the most underrated or the best overlooked song on each album (as viewed by the fans, the band, or in some cases, by me). Would love to see your list! RUSH - "WHAT YOU'RE DOING" Definitely not as far under the radar as other tracks on this album, but it's one of the best and the band hasn't touched it since 1976. I find it far superior to "In The Mood," which was played on nearly every tour through the 80's, and would rather hear it than "Working Man" nowadays. FBN- "BETWEEN BENEATH & BEHIND" A fierce tune that perfectly bridges the gap between their classic rock & prog sounds. Love the live version on ESL, too. CoS - "THE NECROMANCER" Unlike the meandering "Fountain of Lamneth", this is one epic that ranks right up there with "Xanadu", "2112", etc for me. Each of its three distinct sections is great in its own right, and I think a string arrangement is exactly what this songs needs to finally see the light of day again. Maybe this is one of the "old songs" Alex is talking about?? Just imagine the first and third parts with strings - it would work!! 2112 - "TEARS" Beautiful song that should've been part of the acoustic sets in 2002 and 2004. aFTK - "CYGNUS X-1" This one's a bit of a stretch I know, but for the longest time I couldn't get past Geddy's vocals on this song. Finally, it's grown on me and I've listened to it past the instrumental section more regularly - man, are there some heavy parts toward the end! HEMISPHERES - "CIRCUMSTANCES" Also a bit of a stretch, but at under 4 minutes this song could've been on the radio just as much as "Closer to the Heart," "Spirit of Radio", etc. PeW - "DIFFERENT STRINGS" The only song on this album never played live. It's fantastic! MP - "VITAL SIGNS" Hard to call anything on this album "overlooked." I would've said "The Camera Eye" prior to the Time Machine tour, but since every fan was clamoring for it, I believe that "Vital Signs" is the most underrated song. SIGNALS - "THE ANALOG KID" This may be the most-loved, most popular song on my list, but since it hasn't been played in 18 years I'm calling it "overlooked." Time to bring it back!! GUP - "THE ENEMY WITHIN" One of the band's best uses of reggae, it blends with their sound perfectly. I'm calling this one as part of the CA tour setlist. PoW - "MARATHON" Not that overlooked or underrated, but it's an absolutely killer song that I passed on for many years. Sounded amazing on the TM tour! HYF - "LOCK & KEY" On an album with several clunkers and the band's worst case of keyboard saturation, this song has a surprisingly good rock riff in the pre-chorus. PRESTO - "AVAILABLE LIGHT" I overlooked this song for the longest time, and hardly listened to anything past "Superconductor" on this album. Wow, was I missing something. I think this would sound utterly amazing with a string arrangement on the upcoming tour. RTB - "THE BIG WHEEL" For the longest time I only bothered to listen to the first three tracks on this album frequently. The rest just didn't do it for me, and while several still don't, this is one I actually found stuck in my head one day. Great riff and great chorus. CP - "CUT TO THE CHASE" One of the band's best albums of their "modern" period, this song is just killer. It seems to be loved by many fans as it appears on many setlist "wish lists", so let's hope the band finally agrees! TFE - "THE COLOR OF RIGHT" Not the band's best work, and I only truly enjoy 4 songs: the first three, which were released as singles and all fantastic, and this one. It's a shame it was one of the few not played live on the supporting tour. VT - "VAPOR TRAILS" Even the band likely isn't crazy about this album, with no more than 4 tracks played during one show and only 5 out of 13 ever played live. The title track is far superior to much of the album, and it seems many fans agree, so it's surprising that the band hasn't pulled it out yet. Maybe on this tour? S&A - "WE HOLD ON" Clearly the band likes this album, with 10 out of 13 songs played live. This is one of the few not played, and in my opinion a killer rocker that's a lot better than "Spindrift" or "Faithless." CA - "CLOCKWORK ANGELS" So it's a bit too early to know what's "classic" from this album, but for me the title track is one of the greatest pieces of music this band has ever written. I'm calling it "underrated" because I'm surprised not everyone feels that way! GREAT f***ing JOB!!!! Dude did great
  2. QUOTE (clintonb @ Jul 26 2012, 10:38 AM) It seems like the "synth period" of Rush (say Signals through Hold Your Fire) is much maligned, but it is my second favorite period of Rush (behind 2112 through Moving Pictures). People complain that Alex is pushed into the background. That's true but I think these albums contain some of my favorite Alex guitar parts. I'm a sucker for those wirey, chorusy, "Police"-like, "new wave"-like arpeggio parts. His solos become more atmospheric, atonal, twisted, emotional. On Signals they even sound kind of "trippy" on songs like Digital Man, The Weapon, and Losing It (which has that cool violin solo). Kid Gloves has one of my favorite guitar intros and solos. Emotion Detector has some cool parts during the verse and a great solo. Between The Wheels (especially recent live versions) just sounds emotionally twisted. These are just a few examples I can think of off the top of my head. I think my favorite drum parts are on these albums too. Lots of creative and interesting stuff. My main complaint about the "synth" era is the keyboard sounds they used. I like the analog keyboard sounds used on Signals, but I'm not a fan of the sounds on Power Windows and Hold Your Fire. Playing aside, I think the songwriting is pretty good. Especially compared to albums like Test For Echo, Vapor Trails, and Snake & Arrows. It's sooo sooo good

  10. QUOTE (rushgoober @ Jul 24 2012, 04:22 AM) QUOTE (cokebabies2112 @ Jul 24 2012, 01:07 AM) While the first two albums as your favorite make sense, The way you talked about the ones at the end of the list was just so wrong..... Actually, I think he got it fairly spot on, at least with putting their worst 4 albums in his bottom six; Presto, RTB, T4E & VT. S&A belongs a tad higher, and Rush belongs a lot higher (not to mention Caress of Steel getting too much praise), but hey, no one's perfect! Well in my opinion besides Rush and maybe half of Fly by night there really is no bad rush album... Maybe test for echo. But PRESTO, S&A,VP, And Roll the bones? I mean come on those are each amazing albums!!!!?!?!
  11. QUOTE (Gompers @ Jul 19 2012, 06:09 AM) Does anyone really like this song? Vapor Trails has many issues and to me, this song is a prime example. Two things hurt this song. Dissonance and general lack of melody, the later of which is a problem with VT. It is really painful to get through. And Geddy has vocal overdubs which don't help. At 3:48 the song resolves a bit and sounds a little cleaner, but then it goes right back into the wall of sound. Was this song intended to be so grating? It is part 4 of the Fear trilogy afterall. Maybe it was an artistic effect. (Thanks to Tick for the thread idea. ) Wow, I couldn't disagree anymore. This song is awesome, absolutely nothing to complain about.
