  1. Try seeding your station with a song instead of the band. I used LVS, the live in rio version because thats all Pandora has, and it has worked great pulling in a lot of Yes and other seventies prog as well as Porcupine Tree, Riverside, Opeth, etc.
  2. Well SA is new to me. I've only had it about a year. I lost track of Rush after RTB when I reconnected and learned about CP-SA, SA was the first one I bought. Still don't have CP or TFE. But for me CA blows SA away. I've probably listened to CA more this week than I have SA since I bought it. CA kicks ass over everything since PW for sure and maybe even since MP.

QUOTE (deathlikesilence @ Jul 25 2012, 06:32 PM) QUOTE (SchemingDemon @ Jul 25 2012, 06:29 PM) QUOTE (spock @ Jul 25 2012, 06:26 PM) Someday, folks other than us at TRF will look back at a band who stayed together, stayed fresh musically, stayed friends, and didn't become a parody of themselves and realize - there's no one else like that. Really: no other group. It's this notion that leads me to believe there will be a cult following for the boys long after they're gone. dying will make them hip i'll start the COURTNEY KILLED GEDDY rumor
  4. Just saw Steve Miller and Pat Benatar last week. Next show I have tix for... in Nov. I was going to try to go to see Yes in Aug but my car developed expensive problems yesterday so that's probably not going to happen now grrr damn typos
  5. Van Halen 1981 Fresno Selland Arena. I had nosebleeds in the back and the sound absolutely sucked. But it was still and EVH was smokin'

Everyone is trying to make sure their song volumes arent lacking compared to others. The loudness wars started long before the invent of the iPod. Indeed it did. This has been going on for decades. Listen to some records. Actual vinyl records and you can hear all kinds of compression there as well. It just isn;t as grating as digital compression. Um, mr. audio expert... Please explain how you 'compress' an analog signal. You 'experts' crack me up... What kind of credentials do you bring to the table? I compress audio and video for a living. Analog is a signal. An analog compressor or limiter is an effect. You are altering the signal not making it smaller in size. Totally different than digital compression. Digital is 0s and 1s. You compress a digital file by making it smaller. I could explain how this is done, but then I'd have to kill you. Apple was very cute by naming their great compression program, Compressor. It is great! What these so-called experts are implying is that a CD /DVD holds information in the same manner as a vinyl record album. I know we call it "burning" a disc, but it's not what you think. In fact, commercial discs are not "burned" at all. They are essentially a picture of the master disc stamped onto a disc. Well there's compression http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loudness_war and then there's compression http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zip_(file_format) Totally different things dude. But then you should know that.
  7. Bay Area radio sucks and I seldom listen to it, but out of curiosity I looked over the posted playlists for 107.7 The Bone. Since the release they have played HF 8x. To put it in perspective, in that same period the latest Chickenfoot - 10x, the latest ZZ Top - 8x, Black Keys - 4x, VH - 2x. of course the majority of the plays for all the new stuff was after midnite and before 6:00 am. We don't have a New Rock station here. Just 1 alternative station and 3 classic rock stations. Of the classic rock only 107.7 will play anything released less than 15yrs ago.
  8. QUOTE (The Lofty Oaks @ Jul 8 2012, 10:13 AM) QUOTE (vital signz @ Jul 1 2012, 11:34 AM) I have been monitoring folks' favorites and least favorites here... Lots of folks are placing it in their bottom tier. That is mind-blowing to me. This song has such a cool intro, huge build-up, then KA-BLAM, KA-BLAM, KA-BLAM, KA-BLAM, KA-BLAM, KA-BLAM, KA-BLAM, KA-BLAM, KA-BLAM, KA-BLAM, KA-BLAM, KA-BLAM, KA-BLAM, KA-BLAM, KA-BLAM, KA-BLAM, KA-BLAM, KA-BLAM, KA-BLAM, KA-BLAM, KA-BLAM, KA-BLAM, KA-BLAM, KA-BLAM, KA-BLAM, KA-BLAM, KA-BLAM, KA-BLAM, KA-BLAM, KA-BLAM, KA-BLAM, KA-BLAM, KA-BLAM, KA-BLAM, KA-BLAM, KA-BLAM.......... Geddy hits high notes of old. His bass has an incredible sound. Alex plays some great riffs and has some awesome tremolo work, and has a nice emotive solo. Neil, well is Neil. Is it the lyric, the music, the theme? What turns people off? I think the Seven Cities has far too many "KA-BLAMS" No seriously. I really like the song but for me there are other better songs that just jump ahead of it on the depth chart. I love the Zeppeli-esque groove and throwback vibe but I think it is a little too repetitive. A few more variations on that groove would be nice. I think the song begs for an old school Page style bluesy wah solo rather than the atmospheric stuff. Lyrically I think the story could be a bit more developed. Its a little too general for me. THat being said I love the song and never skip it. You hit it right on the head with the guitar solo. This song called for some serious shredding in the solos and Alex just didn't deliver. Disapointing but its still a rockin' song.
  9. Rush Van Halen Silversun Pickups Joe Bonamassa Styx
  10. QUOTE (GoldRush @ Jul 7 2012, 08:40 PM) I think the question is simple ... I believe the best is 2112 Followed by Presto ... Thank you for answering ... Presto better than Hemi or CA Don't get me wrong Presto is a great song but the other two are just.....epic.
  11. I was going to say Signals by a mile. Then I went and listened to them both all the way through for the first time in ages. Wow was PoW a great album. But so was Signals. I'm still giving it to Signals but thats just because of nostalgia. Signals was released during my freshman year of high school.
  12. QUOTE I never thought the dumbing-down process could get any worse. Yea but nothing personal.
  13. QUOTE (pedro2112 @ Jul 7 2012, 11:25 AM) The comparison of the two songs offends my Rush sensabilities. The problem with the comparison is that musically, there is such an enormous gap between the aweseomeness and winness of the Anarchist, and the late 80's, fusion jazz soft rock diarrea of Prime Mover. So yes, maybe some lyrical concepts are similar, but that is like comparing Freewill to Faithless. Comparing Freewill to Faithless. Just the thought makes me
  14. QUOTE (dtpoet @ Jul 7 2012, 12:13 AM) I think my point is being misunderstood. First, I am not comparing CA to MP. It can't be done as they were born from two completely different eras for Rush themselves. However, I remember the sense of awe, the satisfaction and the intrigue of being a young man and hearing something like MP. It completely turned my view of music upside down. So now some 30+ years later when my teenager tells me what he said in the OP, I was curious if other dads or uncles had heard anything similar. Again, as a whole, you can't compare the 2 It's not really about whether MP is better than CA. For arguments sake we can say CA is better, but while it may certainly impact individual kids such as yours, it can never have the same widespread appeal. The cultural landscape has just changed too much.
  15. QUOTE (trenken @ Jul 6 2012, 08:59 PM) QUOTE (Transcendent Pilgrim @ Jul 6 2012, 07:41 PM) QUOTE (J2112YYZ @ Jul 6 2012, 07:32 PM) I don't think it's the younger generation's MP just based on the simple fact this album has not, nor will not have the impact MP did. CA doesn't have a song like Tom Sawyer or Limelight that will be able to launch the album to that level. While CA is a very good album and it's nice to see some youngins are liking it, the album isn't gonna be that huge. I don't think any album by a rock band can have that kind of impact anymore. The music market has become too fragmented and radio is dead. So how does any band really make an impact outside of its own niche. This post is just not true at all. If you're completely disconnected from modern music I understand why you would think this, but it simply isnt true at all. There are many great bands out there building up huge followings. Some older Rush fans just paint the music industry as all about Katy Perry and Nickelback which is extremely ignorant. People said this same shit in the 90s, and then bands like Tool and Radiohead came around. Radiohead is a band Geddy is a huge fan of himself and are iconic at this point, and bigger than Rush ever was, same with Tool. They've become far more popular than Rush ever has and didnt come around until 20 years later. Bands with a lot of artistic integrity, creativity and talent, and they're always coming out. It's a cycle that NEVER ends, despite the fact that you're just unaware of them because you're all hung up on the past. More recently Mars Volta who Neil is a huge fan of has become very big. They're as complex as Rush ever was with time changes and believe me they do shit way more out there than Rush ever did and are big all around the world and have quite a few songs that have become very popular like their song The Widow. Even my girlfriend loves that song and she doesnt normally listen to rock. To her thats their Tom Sawyer and now suddenly shes a big fan of theirs. No different at all than what Rush did, and they didnt come around until the early 2000s, and there plenty of other bands like them and Rush springing up now. I think you missed my point. I like both Tool and , to a lesser extent, Radiohead. I haven't heard The Mars Volta yet but I'm definitely curious. My point was simply that, for any of the bands you mentioned, I have to actively seek out. While back in the day you would've had to live in a cave to avoid hearing TS.

  17. QUOTE (GUP1771 @ Jul 2 2012, 08:57 PM) I believe I read somewhere that when Alex met Jimmy Page, he mentioned that he loved what Rush did. Don't quote me on that though. I don't know where I read that. I think I heard Alex say that on a youtube interview I watched last night. I was little so I could be mistaken.
  18. QUOTE (JohnnyBlaze @ Jul 5 2012, 02:09 AM) QUOTE (Transcendent Pilgrim @ Jul 5 2012, 02:27 AM) Nov in San Jose will be my first. I've been a fan since 1980 but it seems like every tour something comes up that keeps me from going. Hell it's already started this time. Shortly after I learned the tour dates my wife lost her job. Don't care though. I'm going to this show even if it means going solo due to lack of funds. How many more chances am I likely to get? That sucks man. You will go to a Rush gig. It is your destiny. Yes I will, this year. Already worked it out with the wife. We are going to scrimp and save so that she can go see her favorite - Pat Benatar, and I can see .
  19. I had never heard that term before coming here either, but I still understood exactly what was meant when I heard it. Rush lyrics at least from the 90's forward often feel awkward to me on the first listen. But usually after a couple of listens I will "get" the melody or rythym and the songs begin to work for me. An extreme example (for me anyway) was The Larger Bowl. The first dozen or more times I listened to SnA I would skip this one after a minute every time, I just couldn't force myself to listen to it, it felt awkwaard and forced. Then one time it came up on random shuffle while I was half listening at work and it just suddenly clicked, I "got" the melody and it no longer sounded "off" to me. Now its one of my favorites from SnA. My wife says that it often sounds like he needed one more word, or had one to many, in the verses.
  20. QUOTE (ReflectedLight @ Jul 5 2012, 07:57 PM)QUOTE (Transcendent Pilgrim @ Jul 5 2012, 07:43 PM) In fact after the embarassment of RTB I was completely out and lost track of Rush. it was tough being a rush fan during the 90's. Yea I was a 19 year metalhead when HYF came out. Definitely was disappointed by HYF-RTB. Funny thing is, I rediscovered HYF while going through a divorce many years later and it really touched me deeply, especially Open Secrets. Now HYF is a top ten for me, but while there are many songs on Presto and RTB that I have since come to really like, those are still bottom tier albums for me.
  21. Solid 9. There isn't a bad song on there, even the weaker tracks are pretty damn good. A month in and I still wake up with a different song playing in my head. And I still listen to it at least once a day. The only thing preventing me from calling this a masterpiece is the test of time. If I still like it this much in a year I think it will settle in at number 5 on my list behind PeW, MP Hemi and 2112. And by the way, I'm no fanboi. I have greeted each release since Signals with a healthy dose of skepticism. In fact after the embarassment of RTB I was completely out and lost track of Rush. I still listened to my old collection but was completely unaware of CP-SnA until last year. Needless to say its been a great year discovering new music and CA is the icing on the cake.
